The artwork for the PAL/EU cover is spliced together from the JPN/NTSC booklet character art and wasn't specifically designed for it.

Apparently Alph was actually going to be a clone at one point but it was scrapped. No idea why they wouldn't do that over Lucina or Dark Pit though.
I'm somewhat glad that Lucina's a clone rather than another skin, but mainly because if we ended up getting the latter, Marth would likely lose half of his alternate colors just like Olimar and Wario to make room for an alternate Lucina costume.
Although, if the characters with alternative costumes had gotten 16 color slots just like Little Mac instead of just 8, then I would be fine with Lucina being an alternate costume for Marth.

I called it before the 3DS version released due to the trophies in game. In All-Star mode in the 3DS one you always get the alternate character model if there is one (girl robin, wireframe mac etc) but Olimar just had another color of Olimar while Alph you had to buy from the store (and Alph has the same exact pose as Olimar)
I guessed he'd just have rocks instead of purples so I'm thrilled I was actually right about that.
I'd prefer if Lucina was a costume so people shut the fuck up about 5 Fire Emblems. They designed the game for Marth, Ike and Robin and added Roy as DLC, 3.5 characters for a long living franchise that had a popularity boom is perfect. Compare Mario's 7 or Zelda's 5.
Also, Alph coulda been neat. Imagine if Rock Pikmin granted Super Armor on Smash attacks a la Little Mac. 2 Pikmin reps is preferable to 3 KI reps imo.
Plus side here comes Louie/President/Charlie or Brittany DLC!!

It would've been interesting.
Rock Pikmin instead of Purple. Pink Pikmin instead of White.
Rocks bounce off targets they hit but do significant damage and they'll automatically keep tackling you until you kill them or they're called back. Pink Pikmin arch upwards before going back to the captain if they don't hit anything, also you need to do upwards atacks to kill them because they always attack your upper hitbox.
Give him Olimar's Brawl rope recovery maybe.

I originally guessed that he'd still have white pikmin so he'd still have Olimar's super recovery but him with the build-a-bridge would still work I guess, that or give it back to Olimar and let Alph have the pinks.
I may be wrong but I don't think the purple pikmin cling to you either so wondering why they couldn't just model swap them into rocks.
Also realizing that I called a few things in this game and it's kinda freaking me out. I suggested the Kalos Pokemon League months before it revealed (only thing I got wrong was I said it would change to the champions room if only two fighters are left) and now Alph. Maybe I should make more guesses later.
They should release a free update that sets Alph free from Olimar and gives them both 4 more palette swaps. Give Alph the Rock Pikmin, maybe alter the order in which he pulls out his Pikmin, give him a few more stat changes, and we're good to go! That'd be a nice little gesture, although the chances of it happening are next to zero.

Complaining about Lucina due to the wasted slot fallacy is the dumbest considering she [I]was[/I] an alt skin and just had the tipper removed because why not. She probably took like a day to be implemented as a character with her own slot.
