How have I not seen this thread before.
Is this mostly Smash 4 orrrrr... I'm a Melee and PM player. Or is PM abolished from this forum as well.

Well. Hopefully you'll see me here more often then. Tiny introduction, I suppose. APEX 2015 staff and competitor, took 144th in Melee singles. Friends with a lot of US Smashers despite living in Canada, and currently looking to buy a Wii U because I'm too poor to afford one and Smash 4 would be pretty nifty to have.
I'm probably going to sift through this thread at one point, I'm hoping I can learn more about Smash 4. I'm pretty in the dark about it.

people abuse d-throw to up special because it's a true combo. as in it's an actual combo that you can't dodge most of the time and when people find combos that work they use em. it's like lucas d-throw to u-tilt, it's cheap and easy. don't gotta break the bank to get some damage in y'know what i'm saying? gotta buy the generic brand combo when it's on sale y'know?
edit: is it a true combo? it seems to always hit anyways.

I don't know Smash 4. But if it's not possible to DI, out of the way, nor is it possible to wiggle out of because of hitstun then yes it is a true combo.
Any chain of hits that can be prevented or broken is referred to as a string. Combo is interchangeable but more often than not a true combo is a combo that usually can't be broken and is often the bread and butter of a lot of characters. I don't know a lot about S4 but it seems D-throw is a pretty common launcher into true combos.
as far as i've seen strings are semi-combos that involve the target leaving hitstun - true combos are unavoidable but regular combos could have been avoided with the right DI

I would actually agree with this in PM, he's pretty terribly designed. Tons of fun to play as but incredibly annoying to fight against. Stalls in the air, has stupid range, and literally never dies.

It's possible Leif would've been in place of Roy but I don't think there's anything definitive confirming that. Maybe if Sacred Stones and Binding Blade were swapped in their release order we would've gotten Ephraim or Eirika.
Wasn't PoR at one point in development for the 64 (or speculated to have been?)
Ike/"Paris" as a beefier, stronger Marth (ie tipper damage is the standard) whose slower and has no tip might've been neat.

Strings are a much more loose term of "combo". Chaining moves together when the person can escape relies heavily on a strong mix-up game to mess up DI, fast reaction, and good option coverage.
Combo is the blanket term for chain, string, and true combo.
Example would be Melee Jigglypuff doing up-throw rest against a Fox. Fox can DI but at low % Jiggs covers left and right DI options with UpAir and BAir strings covering all options. This does not make it a true combo though. Fox can DI away meaning Jiggs is required to react on the DI making it a potential string rather than combo.
A true combo would be more akin to Sheik performing D-throw FAir against floaties. A bread and butter true combo for Sheik in Melee.

Depending on your character and your percentage you can di out of the d-throw up special combo. I found it most cases it's better to DI towards Roy as his special can't go straight up.
Fast fallers like Falcon are kinda fucked though, you can get like a 0% to ~50% as Roy by doing dthrow to uptilt about 3 times into upspecial.
