Less characters/moves, more primitive graphics, only a single stage (I think? I only see dreamland in the few matches I saw) and the fact "melee is da bess" probably has something to do with it.

Just a guess though
Dream Land is the starter and Peach's Castle and Kongo Jungle are counterpicks. Most people prefer to just always play on DL though. If argue there's as many viable characters than other games in the series.
What characters did they play?
Sheik and Pikachu
Actual spoiler: [sp]They got up to game 5 with both on their last stock and over 100%[/sp]

Nairo vs. Fatality was also amazing.

I really, really don't know a single thing about 64's meta but from what I saw I did see it was just a assload of Pikachu Ditto's and one captain falcon that was sliding around dreamland taunt canceling.
They never said they wouldn't share music with other stages, or change musics on the older ones. It's not like it's forbidden.
besides sakurai does whatever the fuck he wants
Oh I'm well aware that Sakurai can do pretty much anything. I just want them to have an excuse to bring that remix in with all of its saxxy glory.

pika, kirby, falcon, fox, and yoshi are all pretty close. mario and puff are semi viable and the rest are kinda shit but still put up somewhat of a fight. i think it's a solid metagame. there aren't really any "lame" characters in smash 64 except maybe DK with his regrab stuff but i've honestly never seen anyone use that in a tourney match.
Fair enough, like I said I can't really comment on it too much- was just a random guess really and going off the one time I saw comp 64

no one does that dk grab because it's ez to avoid/punish at top levels
There was one DK ditto that was actually amazing to watch and full of hilarious shit
I bought this game yesterday on a whim because a friend wanted to battle out on the 3DS. I was always skeptical of the game because it looked like a Nintendo reskin of Street Fighter.
But oh my god I'm having so much fun not only with friends but with NPCs too. I'm loving it. Lucina was a bitch to defeat.
Also, why does the game refer to NPCs as "CPUs"? :v:

I'm glad you're enjoying the game but what the fuck
I'm glad you're enjoying the game but what the fuck
I've always been very Nintendo-biased because I never had an interest in their games. I was more of a PS1/Sega kind of person back in the day and that stuck with and on an impulse purchase of a 3DS because it was cheap and my friend wanted to play games with me I found out a whole bunch of games I used to think lesser of. I used to not like Smash because the very few times I tried it when I was little I sucked at it, I disliked Zelda because I just thought it was rehashing the same game over and over.
But I got wise, and now I know better. :eng101s:

Hypest Smash 4 set ever.
That was pretty goddamn good yeah.
I knew Pikachu was good but never saw one go in that hard
Set was ok, felt like too much of the same exact approaches and chains to me which seems to be pretty common with high level play in Smash 4 in general.
Ally vs Nairo @Shots Fired, Esam vs Ally @Evo and Esam vs 8bitman were the only sets I've really found to be really hype so far for this game, hoping that future patches allow for more move variety viability among characters, even Sheik.
You don't need to clarify that you're not the biggest fan of comp Smash 4 in every post you make.
Sorry, I really do want to enjoy Smash 4 and have even bought all stage and character DLC, I'm just hoping that the future patches make it better because right now the game is pretty unbalanced and the nerfs they've done to characters like Diddy and Sheik have just made the comp more boring because they just made those characters have less tools which are still viable enough to keep them top tier rather than toning them down in general while keeping all of those tools useful. It's not really hard for them to bother to check on what their balance choices actually do or not or even look at general consensuses about which characters are good and which aren't, so it's becoming frustrating to me that they aren't doing that good of a job of rectifying issues with viability.
It just feels like they're sometimes going the wrong way with these balance patches, their treatment of Greninja (who I felt would be great to balance the cast around near 1.0 before all of his arbitrary nerfs set in), Sheik and recently Luigi being the most infamous.
Makes me all the more confused why my favorite Smash is usually dead, competitively. People love playing it, people love watching it, it's available to play on the N64 and can be digitally obtained on the Wii where they gave it a special input configuration to make it easily adapted to by Melee and Brawl players using GC controllers. I just don't get it, really.
The Virtual Console version isn't used because it has input lag.
The Virtual Console version isn't used because it has input lag.
Actually it's less preferred because it has frame skipping rather than input lag. A Nintendo 64 is prioritized for usage over a Wii for this reason (as well as the controller) but Wiis are used in the odd scenario that not enough 64s and Smash Bros cartridges are present to meet demand.

the last patch buffed 35 characters, mostly low-tiers, while only nerfed three characters: sonic, shiek and luigi. the nerf on shiek is minimal and sonic got a small kb reduction on his fsmash. luigi's fireballs are now easier to punish, before they were a spammable and stupid-good neutral tool.
top8 at smashcon featured sheik, pikachu, zss, dark pit, falcon, diddy, ness, fox, meta knight and donkey kong. the latter two were considered at the bottom of the tier list when the game came out and look at their placings now.
sakurai is not blind.
and diddy has been given more tools to work with: all his smashes were buffed in the recent patches and guess what? since his uair was nerfed, banana or dtilt>upsmash or fsmash has been more popular. yes, they require a little bit of work but they are not as stupid as his aerials before the nerf

Luigi and Sheik were buffed. The only characters that were net nerfed are Captain Falcon (why?) and Sonic (f-smash, meaning that he now has to rely MORE on spinning to get that extra percent), unless you include the Pikachu Thunder Wave stunlock fix since that was the only thing done to him.

6 out of 10 of those were already top tier when the game launched and are still top tier now. (the four listed that aren't are Dark Pit, Fox, Meta-Knight and Donkey Kong, and even then, Fox has been upper-high from the start, too) For a game that's been out over a year, that's not really much of a change and the top tier is still miles better than the rest of the cast.
sakurai is not blind.
They didn't nerf Rosalina (or touch her at all) and Sheik's f-air was buffed in terms of knockback and the sourspot hitbox was drastically increased in size, making it better at killing and comboing. The buff in sweetspot knockback is way more significant than the damage nerf it had (lol 0.5% decrease) and the sweetspot still really isn't that demanding compared to others, anyway. I have a hard time believing they have not heard a single complaint about Rosalina when pretty much every region detests how good she is and how free, campy and ridiculous her moveset tends to be in a very toxic way. If they really aren't adjusting her that signficantly, they're either unaware of complaints, flat out don't care, have no idea what to do with her or are oblivious as to why she is disliked as a moveset, considering they were pretty quick to deal with things such as fox's jab or thunder wave locks.
Nerfing Captain Falcon out of all characters was also pretty ridiculous since very few people have issues with him (arguably one of the least complained about characters, either in favor of buffs or nerfs) and he wasn't as exceedingly good as many of the other top tier characters are, so he felt like the last top tier that should be considered for flat out nerfs. Greninja has also had it pretty stupidly bad with nerfs when he was a pretty well-rounded character before and is now just average to low after receiving some form of nerf in nearly every patch.
and diddy has been given more tools to work with: all his smashes were buffed in the recent patches and guess what? since his uair was nerfed, banana or dtilt>upsmash or fsmash has been more popular. yes, they require a little bit of work but they are not as stupid as his aerials before the nerf
Diddy's changes I agree with, but Sheik has just had her options removed one by one over the past several patches without solving the problem that the rest of her remaining moves are basically better than entire characters. This doesn't fix Sheik or make her dramatically worse to the point of being balanced, it just makes her boring, and this "strip down their tools" mindset has negatively affected a lot of top tiers without actually knocking them out of top tier, which just means that players have to do the same approach/combo/punish over and over again without variety. That's a pretty bad way to balance a game, to be honest. At least Diddy's up air got a new use but despite severe nerfs to him, he's still top tier, which just shows how truly good Sheik and Diddy are.
Yeah, some characters like Robin, Donkey Kong and Marth are no longer trash tier but after a year of balancing, it really isn't that much different now in terms of which characters are the best and which ones are just ok or bad. I still have hope because Roy and Ryu felt like they were balanced around Sheik, as was Lucas to a slightly less degree, but 1.1.0 just has a lot of questionable decisions on many characters, as did several earlier patches.

I'm guessing that this scenario is going to be more and more frequent as time goes on and N64s become less common, so I would expect the Virtual Console version to be widely used sometime in the future.
But Smash players are extremely dedicated, they'd use Ouyas if emulating the game on it ended up giving better results than VC emulation :v:
I think they can't understand why Rosalina is so hotly contested. "She's really light, huge, slow, floaty, how could she be so good?" On paper she looks terrible but whenever I see one in For Glory I sigh and prepare for a good 6 minutes of painfully slow, boring, defensive gameplay
Might as well share this match I had.

Did . . . . . . that Bowser Jr just airstrafe into that usmash? :v:
What could he even really do at that point from directly above in a way to contest it?
worda
ending lag for fireballs were increased by three frames, that's huge for character that mainly forced approaches with his neutral b. and he got one percent reduction on his fair, which yes does result in slightly less kb and theorically longer strings but his bread and butter combo hasn't changed much (dthrow>double fair>regrab>...) and thus deals less damage overall. upb and dtilt changes are insignificant.
yes sheik's fair was indeed made better for killing and not comboing. the problem with fair was its insane combo potential resulting in characters being carried by the move from one ledge of the stage to the other.
and now sheik has another reliable kill move besides bouncing fish, weren't you just complaining how she got stripped of her kill power in the previous patches?
i agree on falcon, forgot about him, and rosalina but lucky for us, people are finally finding out more ways to get rid of luma resulting in less representation of the character at majors.
i don't share your grim vision of smash 4 balancing. you're right, they're not HUGE changes but hell, most of them are steps in the right direction and definitively contribute in refining a big slice of the cast. another notable example is ike, who started as a joke and is now viewed by many, including myself, as one of the low top-tier characters.
the change that gave me most hope was the reducing invincibility on rolls and spotdodges. again, it's one frame and nothing game-changing but seeing the very core of the game still being subject to playtesting has put future patches in a brighter light, at least for me.

not sure if it's quite the same, since there's a billion ways for him to hit you but only one grab
