Ryu makes a pretty good training mode buddy. Very well-rounded, not too fast or slow, too heavy or light, and not as obnoxious as Mario.
Plus, unlike Falcon (who I used as a training assist before), he has a projectile and a (pseudo) counter, letting you learn timing and tactics for those kinds of attacks as well.
I wonder if the "several" is a translation error. "There's only going to be several more characters" seems like an oxymoron.
From the article:
数 means “several,” and it can be combined with another character to say “several of a specific something.” For example, 人 is the character for “person,” 数人 is “several people.” Sakurai wrote 数体. “体” is “bodies,” generally used for things that humanoid, or humanlike but usually aren’t actually alive. If I was referring to several dolls, or several figurines, I might say “数体.” Similarly, I assume Sakurai is referring to characters, not updates, because of his character choice.
Looking at Jisho several in Japanese usually refers to 2 to 6 items.
I'm guessing two more "surprise" (Wolf and someone else, either veteran or newcomer) characters and then two ballot characters, maybe 4-6 ballot characters if we're really lucky.

Guess his vanilla flavor trascends everything. Unusual mechanics? Not a problem for THE fighting game character.

Wolf and Snake is all I ask for veteran returns. Sorry Pokemon Trainer and Icies.

god this would make me so happy
but i really think it's just gonna be 2 ballot characters, and i doubt wolf or any veteran will be one of them. Sakurai will probably pick new characters for the last two slots.

I understand doubting Snake/Ice Climbers/Pokemon Trainer rejects, but I actually think Wolf is a pretty safe bet.
whens pichu

of course he is compared to the other veterans, it's just that I doubt he'd do 1 newcomer and 1 veteran instead of just 2 newcomers. Assuming there's really only two slots left which there seems to be.
Where the hell is my ice climbers.

We have a NEW 3ds.
Bring em back as exclusives.
I actually like few of the 3ds maps over the wii u maps

Then normal 3DS users will be without them, and they have been following keeping the roster exactly the same on both versions. I say just limit Ice Climbers to only be able to be played by one person in a match.
If they're gonna make Ice Climbers exclusive they may as well just make them Wii U exclusive lol
I always thought to make them retro or low poly in the 3ds and high poly in the wii version.

I'm all for that idea!

and have a skin for them on the Wii U that makes them Retro as well.

To be fair, those slots were not present in the original Smash 4 and were added with DLC. It's plausible that the 6 slots (Mewtwo, Lucas, Roy, Ryu, +2 more) are just pre-ballot DLC characters, especially since no equivalent unused slot system existed for the stages.

Sakurai already said from here on it's gonna be ballot characters, so those two remaining slots are going to them.

That's not the hardware limitation that's kept them down, it's the fact that the game would be forced to load up to 8 AI subroutines at once, on top of the stage subroutine, and the item director subroutine. That's something that the 3ds couldn't handle at a consistent 60 frames, so Sakurai benched the pair. It doesn't matter if they are rendered in 2d or with low-fidelity, because they'd still be just as complex a load for the CPU to handle calculations for.
In my opinion, they should have combined the Ice Climbers together ala Duck Hunt Duo so that they never left each other instead of ditching the concept entirely. Side B for ICs shows a good way of how they could pull this off without looking strange.
Pokefloats please
[editline]June 26 2015[/editline]
Also right when I typed the first P in that above, apparently I had "ICKA" set to my Ctrl+C for some reason and it copypasted to form PICKA.
I think I might have unknowingly prediced Pichu
I want Pokefloats 2. Plan its transitions out a bit better so you don't instantly die half the time, and it'd be more than playable.
Also the omega form would be a giant Avalugg.

The problem was mainly AI (for 3DS' lower power and possibly WiiU's 8 player Smash) and not just graphics from rendering several Ice Climbers at once, right? That's why they cut the amount of Olimar's Pikmin and reduced their frame rate.
