It is an anarchistic knock at American life where you can play as a criminal in several fictional cities around America and you can do whatever the fuck you want, since the games are primarily open ended; steal a car, shoot up things, do some side missions or just simply advance the story, whatever, it's all up to you. The games use a lot of pop culture references and can (and will) proceed to take the piss out of everything; every subject is fair game. It also features some awesome music relevant for whatever time period the game is in. The Games -- 2D Era Grand Theft Auto Release: October 1997 The first game of the series to hit the shelves for the Playstation 1, PC and Gameboy Advance. It's about as basic as you can get, but still a classic and it came with two mission packs. GTA (and GTA2) is available for free download on Rockstar's official website, as well as Steam (but you have to buy it as part of a collection there). Mission Packs Release: April 29 1999 [GTA: London 1969] June 1 1999 [GTA: London 1961] These two mission packs were the first expansions for Grand Theft Auto, and set about expanding the core gameplay and changing the main locale to London instead of the United States. Grand Theft Auto 2 Release: September 30, 1999 For the PC, PS1, Dreamcast and Gameboy Advance. It offered an improved version of the original GTA and allowed you to do work for seperate gangs. -- 3D Era Grand Theft Auto 3 [t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/be/GTA3boxcover.jpg/250px-GTA3boxcover.jpg[/t] Release: October 22, 2001 Hailed the granddaddy of all open world 3D games, GTA3 was released for the PS2, Xbox and PC. The silent protagonist (revealed in later games to be Claude) is betrayed by his girlfriend in a robbery, and you set out to gain revenge on her through moving up in the crime ladder. It set the precedent for all the future 3D GTA games and was very amazing and controversial for its time, as well as establishing Liberty City (the first arguably well known city in the GTA series). It was rereleased later for the iOS and Android phones on its anniversary, as well as being available on the Playstation Network. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City [t]http://images.gamestar.de/images/idgwpgsgp/bdb/1778337/600x.jpg[/t] Release: October 29, 2002 Vice City was released for the PS2, PC and Xbox. It is set in the fictional Florida settlement of Vice City, and takes a lot of inspiration and flair from the 80s, as well as loosely following the Scarface theme for the story. Features a lot of rad music, colourful scenary and motherfucking helicopters, as well as introducing the first talking protagonist Tommy Vercetti. It was rereleased later for the iOS and Android on its anniversary, and is also available on the PSN. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas [t]http://vygame.net/wp-content/uploads/1GrandTheftAutoSanAndreas-Cover.jpg[/t] Release: October 26, 2004 Released on for the PS2, PC and Xbox, it is the largest GTA game to date in the 3D Era. It features a whole state, San Andreas, instead of just one city, with three cities loosely based off Los Angeles (Los Santos) and San Francisco (San Fierro) of California, and Las Vegas (Las Venturas) of Nevada. It is seen to be the most popular GTA game still today, as it bought a lot of new features to the table. The usefulness of these features (the rpg style elements primarily) is hotly debated amongst many fans. Also introduced Carl 'CJ' Johnson, make of him what you will. You can also swim in this one, finally. It is available on PSN and XBLM. Grand Theft Auto: Advance Release: October 25, 2004 Developed by an independant studio (Digital Eclipse) for the Game Boy Advance. Features a new main character called Mike who does criminal work in Liberty City. Considered by some to be the weakest link in the series. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories [t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/ea/Grand_Theft_Auto_Liberty_City_Stories_box.jpg[/t] Release: October 24, 2005 For the PSP (and a year later on the PS2), this is a spinoff to GTA3 (set three years before) putting players in the shoes of capo Toni Cipriani, who rises through the Leone ranks in Liberty City and earns the trust of his boss Salvatore Leone. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories [t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/3e/GTA_Vice_City_Stories_PSP_boxart.jpg[/t] Release: October 31, 2006 Also for the PSP (and again ported to the PS2 only), this is the earliest canon GTA game in the 3D era and is set two years before Vice City, showing how dishonourably discharged army private Victor Vance rises through the criminal underworld in Vice City just to survive (and dealing with Lance.. fucking Lance). Features a lot of pastel coloured suits, more 80s music and the return of swimming. -- HD Era Grand Theft Auto IV [t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b7/Grand_Theft_Auto_IV_cover.jpg[/t] Release: April 29, 2008 The most detailed game ever released in the series, Grand Theft Auto IV hit the shelves for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. It details the journey of Niko Bellic, an immigrant fresh off the boat from Europe inspired to start a new life after reading his cousin's many letters about how awesome America is. However, once he gets there he finds out that Roman was just telling bullshit stories and is forced to work his way through the shady dealings of Liberty City to secure some money and deal with his past at the same time. This is set in a completely new universe (with references to the 3D era but no reappearances of the old characters) and features some really amazing physics and graphics, and keeps the overall classic GTA gameplay. Just be weary of getting persistent phone calls from all your friends. There's also the PC port, notorious in its ability to work in technologically impossible ways on every machine as well as being bundled with GFWL, but as of a few patches, GFWL has been removed completely and the game optimised. Episodic Content [t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/cc/Grand_Theft_Auto_IV_Episodes_From_Liberty_City.jpg[/t] Release: 17 Feburary 2009 [TLAD] 29 October 2009 [TBOGT] The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony were released as two-parters to GTA4, part of a deal with Microsoft Games for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. It fixed up a lot of the criticisms with GTA4 and interweaved the three protagonists stories together (Niko Bellic, Johnny Klebitz and Luis Lopez) into an interesting and satisfying experience, also offering new weapons, cars and a whole bunch of stuff to do. TLAD also requires you to be confident of your sexuality. You can buy GTA4 + TLAD and BOGT in a complete bundle called 'Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City' in retail or on Steam. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars [t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/75/ChinatownWars.jpg/252px-ChinatownWars.jpg[/t] Release: 17 March 2009 Released for the Nintendo DS, and a few months later for the PSP and iOS, it is the second game (not counting the episodic content) to be released in the HD era and follows the story of Huang Lee through Liberty City. It received impressive reviews for a handheld game. Grand Theft Auto V [t]http://media.rockstargames.com/rockstargames/img/global/news/upload/actual_1364906194.jpg[/t] Release: September 17, 2013 The latest of the Grand Theft Auto series, released on the Xbox 360 and PS3 (PC unconfirmed). It tells the stories of three playable protagonists; Michael, a former robber and troubled family man who is now living the high life in Los Santos and unsatisfied with his life, Franklin, a member of Grove Street who is looking to get out of the hood and earn himself more cash than all the awful gang related errands he runs and Trevor, Michael's former partner-in-crime, living in Blaine County way out in the sticks. The stories of the three characters intertwine frequently and outside of missions the player can freely switch between them. They come with their own statistics, similiar to San Andreas, but more passive and less nagging. The game has been streamlined in many areas, fixing up many complaints people had about GTA IV (whether they're good or not is up to you), with minimal to no loading screens, graphic improvements, tweaked driving physics, tweaked shooting mechanics. Basically, taking all the good shit from previous Rockstar games and putting them together. Online was released sometime later, and so far the launch has been plagued with problems. And the fact that there is very little to do at the moment, but there is content updates being promised so be on the lookout for that. You know, sometimes, I kind of wish San Andreas never existed. Rockstar jumped the shark when they made San Andreas and now every single sandbox game ever made has to be compared to San Andreas and they all lose. It's kind of sad, actually.
It's kind of sad, actually.
Not to Rockstar :v:
Not to Rockstar :v:
No, because now every one of their games are criticized because they aren't as good.
No, because now every one of their games are criticized because they aren't as good.
Perhaps they should look back on San Andreas and find out what made it so amazing, then.
Perhaps they should look back on San Andreas and find out what made it so amazing, then.
The driving school missions are OBVIOUSLY what made SA so amazing.
Go home beagle, you're drunk.
The GTA: London cutscenes remind me of something you'd see in I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream. Terrifying.
Go home beagle, you're drunk.
I love it when your just driving through places such as inner citie areas or just out in the country and one of these fuckers just lands and blows up everything around you.
No, because now every one of their games are criticized because they aren't as good.
Doesn't stop me from playing them. San Andreas was good but I find it silly that people can't look at each game as a new thing, rather than a "San Andreas predecessor."
[T]http://i.cubeupload.com/5bEjG5.jpg[/T] The Vice City Golf Course Massacre begins.
i don't understand why they waited so long to make another gta game with as much stuff as SA. I mean, from an ethical standpoint trying to sell copies, isn't GTA SA the most selling GTA game as well as the most selling PS2 game of all time? Hopefully GTA V will be worth the wait.
Yeah, I have a lot of friends who own San Andreas and no other GTA game.

EDIT: I forgot to put, I know the GTA4 statistic is irrelevent to your statement but I figured people would be curious for a comparison.
I love it when your just driving through places such as inner citie areas or just out in the country and one of these fuckers just lands and blows up everything around you.
I kept having them spawn in driveways in the country on the PS2. Is that normal?
CIT just upgraded their server to support 1200 players. Back when I started playing MTA, 200 was the largest :v:
I know I'm bumping a week old thread but I really think that this guide that I made in the last thread and have posted on the STEAM Community for the game should be posted here, I still find it very hard to find this guide today and I know how hard it is to figure out how to set it up on STEAM/Windows 7, but it's totally worth it as it's an amazing mod and adds a lot of stuff missing in the conversion from Vice City to San Andreas, as well as a whole lot more content that should have been in the vanilla game or was shown off in the Beta.
Guys I figured out how to properly install Things to do in San Andreas (Until You're Dead) with the STEAM version of the game and on Windows Vista/7/8. (Note: This only works on a fresh install of the game, it does not work with other mods, unless the other mods are installed after installing these mods) 1. Downgrade to V1.0 using the Downgrader Tool and then delete or move gta-sa.exe 2. Install Cleo and GXT Hook 3. Use the standard Things to do in San Andreas installer 4. When you navigate to the Steam game folder and select it, use the arrow keys to keep going right. You will find another folder that doesn't exist was added on to the end. Delete this and then click the install button. 5. Install the Friendly version of TTDISA Unofficial Fix 1.1 and TTDISA Unofficial Fix 1.2. 6. Rename gta_sa.exe to gta-sa.exe and right click on gta-sa.exe, go to properties and set it to run on Windows XP Service Pack 3 Compatibility Mode. 7. Launch the game normally through STEAM and it should work. 8. Now get to installing all your other mods!
I love messing around in GTA 4 with godmode and ragdolling around and stuff, but what sucks is that in godmode niko doesn't make any pain noises when he hits something so if he flies out of a windshield he goes "auuuuuuuuuuuuuugh" even though he's on the ground faceplanted in asphalt. is there a mod that gives niko something like, a million health points and every few seconds it re-adds the health (so you hear the satisfying "ouch"es and "shit"s when you smash his face into a television screen) to keep it constant
I just didn't like playing as a black guy in San Andreas. The "gangsta" storyline really annoyed me. it wasn't until the later missions that I actually started to enjoy the game because there was a lack of "gangsta" stuff. After I beat San Andreas, I never really came back to it. GTA IV has way more replayablilty in my opinion. I could just mindlessly kill cops on there and not even realize how much time has passed.
CIT just upgraded their server to support 1200 players. Back when I started playing MTA, 200 was the largest :v:
When I played MTA for the first time there wasn't even a deathmatch mode, just racing.

I cannot be the only one amazed by how good this mod looks. People need to know!
Holy fuck this mod gives you a Just Cause 2 style grappling hook in IV: http://www.gta4-mods.com/script/jc2-iv-grapple-alpha-f20305

So does GTA IV still run horribly on PC? Are there any third party fixes i should know about?
GTA IV is very picky. It could run great on one midrange PC on high, and crash and burn on another PC with identical specs. Furthermore, some of the lower quality options SOMETIMES make the game run worse than on high. The whole thing is filled with sometimes and maybes. Your best option is to just get it on sale if you're not sure whether or not your PC will run it. To give you an example, I had been running GTA IV for the longest time on medium low on my desktop, getting around 30 fps, 40 max. The other day I clicked "automatically choose" for the video options, it set them to High, went ingame, 60 fps.

Vice City will always be my favorite, San Andreas is good to fuck around in multiplayer mods but the gangsta storyline sucks IMO. In San Andreas the missions aren't as fun as in Vice City, i always get annoyed by the 10th mission or so, never finished it. [editline]16th March 2013[/editline] I tried to play san andreas yesterday, i gave up at the first mission :-) What is wrong with me? Am i the only one who doesn't like SA?
San Andreas was and is my favorite out of all of them because it had everything I wanted to see Trains,Tow trucks that tow,Usable tractor trailers,Usable Forklifts, bicycles and tons of cheats and had a giant ass map.
