A lot of people theorize that it has something to do with the bite of 87, the two kidnapped children, and the 5 children who were killed. But at the same time, you can set the animatrons to do literally nothing for an entire night, so the technology is still in control, it's not all supernatural.
I kinda doubt the custom night is meant to be canon.

I've been considering whether or not the murder of the five dead children is the result of Freddy or not. It says a person was arrested and charged thanks to surveillance footage, but the MO of the machines continuing this on and the fact that they haven't been pacified whatsoever by the company makes me wonder if the guy that got arrested was innocent - or, hell, a security guard at the time - and the animatrons have been doing this since day one?
I doubt it, actually. Freddy's definitely got some sort of supernatural traits going on himself, but there's just not enough info on the murders to tie everything together neatly besides the kids being stuffed in the suits. And considering we see the room where the suits are repaired, disassembled put together and so forth (both in gameplay and at the game over), this implies the company hasn't even bothered to look at the internals, or they're intentionally keeping it on the down-low to save face or something.

There are two theories I find "reasonable", based on the newspaper cut-outs from changed posters:
1. The robots force people into suits because they are mimicking the murderer of 5 children who stuffed the bodies inside of them while he was wearing a Freddy suit himself. Foxy developed a "taste" for blood somehow and then the bite of 87 happened.
2. The convict was innocent and it was robot Freddy who lured and killed the children. Robots are just inherently evil and know what they are doing because horror games. Also paranormal for good measure.

I feel the reason that this game is so big, and considered "pretty good", are:
1) Setting
2) Story [Cryptic, at that]
3) Simplicity
