Having more than 2 teams would be awesome. For the small-scale though, you should be able to press a button (like E) that would shout out using that text box, something to indicate a temporary alliance, and the other squad leader would be able to press E to verify it.
Maybe being able to wave a white flag or something to signal parley? Possibly script something in to make you lose rank points if you shoot someone who is signally a cease fire, or during parley, to prevent people from A) Grabbing a free kill while someone's waving the flag, and B) Waving the flag, waiting for them to cease fire, then using it to get some free kills.
Please no RTS elements. Diplomacy esque stuff would be dumb. That has no business in this game just like it has no business in any other war game. The point is to fight and shit, not waive flags and make friends with your enemies. People would just waive their flags the second they're going to die so the other team gets punished for killing surrendering dudes and whatnot. This is a war shooting game. You shoot guns and throw grenades that kill people so you can capture bases. No RTS elements where bases make resources and vehicles blah blah. If there is vehicles, it should be light vehicles like Humvees. No tanks.

What would be the point in playing this game, otherwise? There are plenty of "Just fight and shit" games out there. And surrendering when you're about to die makes sense, I mean, isn't that the whole point of surrender? You'd just have to make it so that it only punishes you if you shoot them after a few seconds of them surrendering, and only if you fire after then. That way, it gives the other side enough time to make sure they notice the surrender, and also prevents you from losing points if you, say, fire an RPG or something slow-moving, then they surrender, and just after the "surrender timer" expires they get hit by the rocket and die.
Diplomacy? Already in the game, well, when Multiplayer is up, and it goes like this Player #1 from Green side: "Hey, stop shooting us" Player #1 from Tan side: "No"

People would be encouraged to surrender instead of fighting to the death because they could be rescued by another squad. The group who takes the surrenders has to either take the chance of being seen on the map, and possibly make a lot of points (which may kill them), or just killing the group at the expense of not getting a bonus in points. EDIT: Woo alpha 0.11! http://www.modulaatio.com/runningwithrifles/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=28
Pre-alpha 0.11 has been released indeed, get it here http://www.modulaatio.com/runningwithrifles/running_with_rifles_prealpha_0.11.zip! Here's the change log as requested, in no particular order: - AI attackers actually stay to defend a previously occupied base, if needed - fixed shooting through wall if crouching close to a wall - sandbag / trench wall height reduced, enabling better shooting over the wall - enabling climb over only with wall-like structures, trenches, sandbag walls, fences - soldier is no longer rewarded for killing fellow soldiers with grenades, rather there's a penalty - soldier is no longer rewarded for shooting corpses or throwing grenades at corpses - added the throw grenade -button in the readme - player respawn location check improved, should no more respawn in places with enemies - mouse sensitivity scale increased - reduced point gain for using grenades to kill enemies - player weapon mag is now full after respawn - crosshair center visual and obstruction marker for line of sight aid - reduced fog slightly - reduced AI initial rank scale - reduced AI willingness to change team - reduced max distance to throw grenade - reduced grenade kill range - moving uphill is now slightly slower - corpses behave better now, less jumping around - improved going alert when a grenade is thrown - smoothened the heightmap a little bit, should reduce bumpiness that also obstructs bullets for no purpose - config: changed how antialias is handled, makes us of graphics card capabilities now - added fallback techniques for graphics cards without vertex programs, not tested - fixed map view block aspect ratio - map view coloring changed slightly - team member following improved; members in front don't run straight up to the leader if leader is anyway coming their way - base definitions un-hardcoded; map modding basically now possible by modifying objects.svg, terrain5_*.png and worldcolor.png.. - AI trench steering improved, still some issues there - double step sound is now heard when soldier touches ground after jumping - dead soldiers generated by not-nearby block battles are now cleaned up -- should fix "character pool size" errors - game saving no longer stores dead soldiers - UPDATE: Center trench -base added
Making custom maps should be feasible now! EDIT: The map is screwed up. On a good note, the line-of-sight maker is really clever. Also, my FPS seems to be lower. EDIT: He fixed it! http://www.modulaatio.com/runningwithrifles/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=31 I made that support thread.
Sweet, trying it out now. [editline]29th June 2011[/editline] Adding to OP as well.
Played this game, liked it, but I'm going to wait until 0.5 before I start actually playing it, or 0.2 if they keep going +0.01 with every update.
Can't wait for multiplayer.
I've been browsing the forums, and I've found out that coop mp is coming first, then PvP. PvP will have a fov system.
I've been browsing the forums, and I've found out that coop mp is coming first, then PvP. PvP will have a fov system.
Cool, but what's a fov system?
maybe walkers?
Field of view. You can't see people behind you/that are behind objects that obstruct your view.
Damn good change log there. Downloading new version now.
my new version isnt working it wont launch
I had the same problem. Don't extract the files over the old version, completely delete the old version and then extract the new version into a new folder. Fixed the problem for me.
I had the same problem. Don't extract the files over the old version, completely delete the old version and then extract the new version into a new folder. Fixed the problem for me.
thanks
Anyone else getting the occasional crash, or is it just me?
Anyone else getting the occasional crash, or is it just me?
Yeah it crashes for me too, though I do have a crappy computer.
This game is amazing, keeps me entertained for awhile, could use some fixes with ai and a few improvements, as well as more stuff, but nonetheless is nice. I was with 1 other guy, we were trying to take over a base by ourselves. We were doing fine, until some fucker came up behind me and killed me. My squad mate then went and killed him as well as 6 more soldiers, until he died too. R.I.P Paul Johnson
The new version crashes a lot and the performance overall got degraded a bit. Also, having two crosshairs is confusing, I usually mistake the smaller one for a grenade. the framerate's terrible now
How people know what much exp they got? And how to get promoted to a new rank?
How people know what much exp they got? And how to get promoted to a new rank?
Every 1000 points you are promoted.
How people know what much exp they got? And how to get promoted to a new rank?
Hover your mouse over the character
Oh, i thought that, those numbers were the health points
The new version crashes a lot and the performance overall got degraded a bit. Also, having two crosshairs is confusing, I usually mistake the smaller one for a grenade. the framerate's terrible now
The smaller crosshair is where your bullets will go.
The smaller crosshair is where your bullets will go.
I know, but it's way too jerky. That combined with the bad framerate is a no go, considering there aren't that many major changes at all.
Oh, wow, that's a pretty heavy change log.
Holy shit, I so hate running around, killing squads, only to be 1-shotted from some corner by a camper behind a rock.
Firefights at the moment are just annoying to be honest. I think I'll wait a bit for new features, guns, and hopefully later some better way of telling where cover is and isn't. [editline]4th July 2011[/editline] I honestly would like to see this take on a sort of pseudo realism standpoint, where the basis is realism and the goal is fun.
Damn. My RWR keeps crashing now. Could it be cause I added too many names? There's ~700 or so for "Bad guy last names" (I just copy-pasted a whole list of Russian names) EDIT: I mean it crashes at startup
