Well, i have the CD version of Skyrim, so i can't verify game cache. Any other suggestions?
Install the latest update again.
Guys, before I waste my time; is the leveling system too hard-coded to squeeze in an oblivion styled alternative through modding?
Basically I really want the old system back. Especially the sleep to level.
I know this (Reflection) exists, and it is pretty close, but I really miss the EXP system it had with classes, with the tech of Skyrim/Creation Engine, I'd enjoy it so much more.
The closest you have is to mix Third Era Attributes with Character Creation Overhaul, but other than that, I don't think there is any easy way to bring the old systems back or turning Skyrim into an actual RPG.

I really get put off by how, well ...moddy... these are. Too detached and hacky. Not trying to insult the modders, just too many restrictions and flimsy hard-coded messes to sort through. I think I'll probably just have to play the previous games to be honest.
As long as you don't uninstall them, your saves should remain untouched and not bloated, as far as I know.

You can't physically alter the skills, and you can't change the interface in a way to recgonize a new style skill system. AKA you can change how skills work, you can change how skills are worded, but you can't actually change how the fundamentals in the skill system work (do skill -> gain points -> level up -> spend perks -> assign stamina/magic/etc boost).
Like I'm completely changing the block skill tree and how the block system works, but at the end of the day the RPG mechanics of getting block and leveling it up and assigning perk points are still the same. The only way to really alter this would be to do "moddy" stuff where you use a completely different menu system from that of default skyrim.
Personally I'm of the opinion that the concept behind Skyrim's skill system is way better than Oblivion's in theory. The problem is simply that Bethesda's execution of it was pretty bad, particuarly in how they never really capitalized on perk progression, emphasizing the need to stick to specific roles (aka in my mod you "make your own class" by essentially picking which 5 skill trees you'd like to perk into as your major skill. Major Skill's gain XP at the default rate ['minor skills' gain xp 30% slower], and you can only perk into your major skills), how a lot of the time the skill itself is meaningless when you just pick a perk that is the real benefit (i.e. hard 20% increase in damage, the entire smithing skill, etc). I don't use any third party menu's, I use all the default skyrim systems and simply tweak them to work how I want. I.E. to pick a major skill, all it is is a the first perk in the tree which the rest of the perks branch off of, so you simply spend one of your points to allocate a skill as a major skill. Once you have 5 major skill perks, you can't perk into any more (it'll be greyed out for all other perk trees).
I partiucarly like this because it lets players naturally decide on their class at low levels instead of forcing a choice right at the start that they might not like, or doing what Skyrim does and there being no choices at all to make (which is just as bad, and is completely unfocused). At the same time it makes you eventually decide which skills you want to focus on for your character. It's the benefits of the Oblivion/Morrowind system (making an actual CHARACTER with their own "class" and identity that you choose to be), and skyrim's system (not pigeonholing you to decide on what kind of character you want to be right from the start before you know what would work best for your playstyle).

First things first, I cannot wait to try your mod out.
I really agree with the choices they made, much better for open-ended game play. I just cannot keep myself on track with a certain character. Like I would rather download a mod to disable fast travel than just ignore it.
Hey im finally not a console peasant! But the bad news is that i have to wait for GamersGate to give me a key. :(
I prefer Skyrim leveling over Oblivion leveling. I've played so much Oblivion that I know when I should level up, what major skills to choose, which to avoid, how to level efficiently, etc. But Skyrim feels much better, you can just play the game, do the quests and never worry about modifiers, attributes or other stuff. For me, it's much more immersive
I liked Daggerfall's system. You could make yourself unable to use swords and there were several different speech skills. If you didn't assign your points correctly, you wouldn't get past the first rat in the game.
For me Skyrim's loss of any kind of class system has kind of gotten rid of any real potential replay value for me. In the older games I've always enjoyed going back, picking a new class and being forced to adapt my play style to the skills I have, whereas in Skyrim it seems I always fall back into the same old gameplay habits and my character levels up in those skills accordingly.

One of the main things I like about Morrowind's leveling system compared to Skyrim's is that it (mostly) forces you to play a 'class'. Sure you can level up any weapon and become equally proficient with it, but that takes a lot of time. Skyrim just seems like you are equally good at any sort of role, with the only 'class' being that which you imposed on your own character as a form of role-playing. Add to the fact that in Skyrim the main decider of how proficient you are at any style of fighting is your smithing, enchanting, and alchemy skills, it all seems very lackluster.
[sp]Not that it's stopped me clocking hundreds of hours in the game[/sp] :suicide:
Skyrim probably would have been a lot better were it not for the damn smithing skill. Easily the most wildly overpowered skill in the game, virtually tripling or quadrupling your combat effectiveness
Plus, you're like.,.. the only one in the world who uses smithing; you never recover "improved" weapons or anything of the sort, save maybe for the "honed" draugr stuff. Is it some sort of dragonborn exclusive power?
Yeah, the lack of classes got on my nerves. There's the Character Creation Overhaul though, which helps bring back some of what was lost. Has added a lot more in the way of replay value for me.
Also why add crafting and then get rid of item durability?

THERE IS A MOD FOR THAT!
you can find improved armour/weapons on almost all enemies and they are wearing it
you can even change the likelihood of you finding it
fighting a bandit chief in full exquisite steel plate, that gets hard
every time I want to replay oblivion, I end up going to the nexus to find some game enhancing mods, but I get repulsed by the home page top mods and end up continuing with Skyrim.
Plus, steam workshop has spoiled me.

when does that face overhaul mod release?

anyone know how to fix consistent random crashing? I've got about 70 or so mods installed if that might be a problem
Sneaking is so god damn overpowered its just hilarious
Sneaking directly in front of an enemy and even if they see you and start combat you can just crouch and then they can't see you anymore.
"There he is! Let's... wait, where did he go? Oh well, let's go back to walking back and forth. There is an arrow in my face now... probably nothing."
I once had a bandit walk up to me while I was sneaking, and he said good morning to me.
I had a bandit give me something back that I dropped from my inventory.
I guess the way Skyrim makes you hilariously overpowered in sneak is from that quest in the thieves guild where the game forces you to equip boots that completely muffles your movement and then throws you into a dungeon full of falmer.
I still haven't completed the main story of this fucking game haha even though I've completed just about every other single quest.

Great. Now I have no reason to even try to complete it. Thanks for spoiling it for me.
