I've deloped this head canon of mine where Mercurial the Spectre is actual the future self of Mortred, the Phantom Assassin. Basically, she travelled between so many different dimensions thanks to Oracle that her corporeal form just shattered and now she's an amnesiac torned spirit who aimlessly pass through the many planes of existence
It does help that in the original Dota Spectre's model is the spiritual form of PA's hero model, the Night Elf Warden

If we take into consideration the new Mortred-Oracle relationship that Valve created for the Nemesis Assassin event,
then that would be a good way to link up Dota lore even more.
But in the same way, you could make other similar links and events that would suggest other heroes being past Mercurial.
Hell, I could make up a legit story coupled with Arcana, that TA desired a knowledge Hidden Ones forbid her to have, and that they have punished her by releasing her from the physical plain into parrallel world where she finds all the secrets she wants but cant unlock any of them.
But thats all just filling up the lore holes that arent even really there in the first place.
Spectre is just an energy being that only regains parts of herself when drawn to fighting in physical world.
Phantom Assassin is one of many Sisters of the Veil, not that much human killers with only purpose being to eliminate targets, following requirements of Veil pattern.

Where in Spectre's kit do you see the ability that instantly deletes a hero from the game files?
Where in PA's kit do you see the ability to make illusions of yourself that chase all 5 enemy players?
