When is he going to fix vampires not drinking booze? They all move at a snails pace if they've been in your fort for long enough.
Better idea is to fix it so they don't get bad moods from not drinking.
Get caught not getting drunk every night in the fortress when booze is available? Death sentence. Must be a vampire.
fucking kobold corpses litter my stairwell and my dorfs refuse to put them in the refuse pile lazy fucks
In DF dwarves are drunk the year around if they can help it.
Had my first siege last night. Had around 99 dwarves (at least Dwarf Therapist said so). About 10-12 goblins came and just stood next to my river in the upper left of the map. One of my dwarves decide to go hunting, pretty much running straight toward the goblins and the first thing he shoots at is a goblin, 10 squares away. Not knowing what kind of armor the goblins had (was copper breastmail most of the time), I only had wooden bolts and I was also just starting to build stuff with metal, so mostly swords and other stuff. I say fuck it, the goblins aren't moving at all and one of the goblins already killed the hunter. I line up my archer squad (thinking this would work) and my weapon squad where the hunter died. I sent out my archers first to attack the goblins and about 5/12 of the goblins retaliated at first. I said fuck it some more, sent out my weapon squad to attack the ones that came. Then the rest of them came. About 7-8 of my dwarves died compared to 2-3 of their goblins. My squads fall back towards my bridge that crosses the river and the goblins killed about 25 of my dwarves that were still working (Don't know how to set up burrows correctly). The weapon squad's leader went somewhere while this was happening and then when the goblins stopped killing my dwarves, my squad leader went and killed about 4-5 of them in a row. I quickly managed my military to get other dwarves into archer/weapon squads and then there were about 2-3 goblins left and we chased them out of the map. After all of this, 65/99 dwarves were left. After the siege, I got a message saying 'Your Doctor Dwarf has been missing for a week!" since he went insane before the siege. I zoomed in to see where it was, he was pushed into my lake and slaughtered a few minutes before the goblins attacked my bridge. I watched it all happen at the time, wasn't sure which dwarf he was. About 30 minutes later of clean up and collecting the goblins weapons/armor and the dead dwarves', I go to save, accidentally abandoning my fortress since it was about 2 in the morning at the time.
Alright so I just started my first game and things are going better than expected. We've carved a nice little home in the side of a small mountain and are well stocked on food. No one has died yet and I'm beginning to set aside work areas for a chef and a carpenter but I've run into some issues. 1. I cannot figure out how to assign someone to be a chef or a carpenter and 2. I cant find the supplies needed to finish the carpentry station. I might need to send some of my dwarves out in search but my hopes are not high if I do that they'll ever return. [editline]5th April 2013[/editline] Big breakthrough! I've figured out how to construct stairways! unfortunately I cannot figure out how to move on the z axis. I will have to experiment. [editline]5th April 2013[/editline] I've figured it out! Time to expand operations! [editline]5th April 2013[/editline] Some sort of strange purple material just filled me fortress and left... I'm very confused.
Oh fuck Oh nice it dropped 400 meat.
Oh fuck
I love the monsters in this game
Oh god how do I get rid of corpses! They're just festering in my fortress.
Oh god how do I get rid of corpses! They're just festering in my fortress.
Make a corpse stockpile out side p-y (Not sure)
Make a corpse stockpile out side p-y (Not sure)
I tried, my dwarves are just standing around the body now.
I tried, my dwarves are just standing around the body now.
Gather all of your dwarves in one room and collapse the ceiling over them.
Gather all of your dwarves in one room and collapse the ceiling over them.
I don't think I have any other options at this point, I think one of them is killing the others.
I don't think I have any other options at this point, I think one of them is killing the others.
in that case, sit back and enjoy the show
The murderer is dead, he killed all of the children. But he is dead. Everything was going so well too.
Everything was going so well too.
Uhm..
he killed all of the children.
It still is.
he killed all of the children.
Believe me, that's a blessing
Alright so after the baby murderer was brought to justice mass starvation stuck out in the fort and everyone died or killed each other... Great start! Looks like I'll need to learn how to make a farm or something.
"The dead walk. Hide while you still can!" what do I do help [editline]6th April 2013[/editline] [t]http://puu.sh/2uSgV[/t] oh my god [editline]6th April 2013[/editline] everyone is dying, and some children got impaled on my spikes, which I suppose is some silver lining

Once in one of my Fortresses a Dwarf threw a plump helmet at a child and it got lodged in their chest and killed them.
What's good to use for an early military? Crossbows or regular weapons? And since I only had one siege, do siege monsters usually wait around a while before attacking straight forward or was mine just glitched?

And then kill the zombies.
Your best bet for a military in the early game is to just not have one, and make sure you're able to sustain yourself for 1-2 years if you're forced to lock your gate. After that, battlements or an archer tower that's only accessible from inside the fortress is a great way to help deal with sieges and ambushes. They won't move towards your fortress unless there's a way for them to get in, but if you're careful you can trick them into rushing towards your gates - and the archers safely behind your fortifications - and shut them just before they get inside. And if they do actually get inside, that's when you have your melee squad descend.
If you're like me and cba to manage a melee squad, just spam traps everywhere. You can use the military schedule to make squads station 1-2 soldiers on your battlements. Then during your "oh shit" schedule, set your training dwarfs to go to the battlements too.
Traps block caravans now, so you have to be careful with them.
Or have a caravan entrance that can be bolted, and a 1 wide trapped pathway with fortifications overlooking it and a deathfall to either side.
