Stupid population influxes. I've got the food/alcohol problem in hand, but getting everyone adequate housing is proving to be a problem. Plus the mayor is bugging me for a new dining room. I've got a feeling I'm gonna get even more immigrants pretty soon though. Right now I'm trying to find a good ore deposit so I can make weapons and shit.
I keep one or more 5x5 dormitories up basically at all times and worry about actual rooms for each dwarf later on, when I don't have a lot to do. They basically become a side project. I make sure to dig out all of the noble's required rooms as soon as I have the spare time, just so I can be done with them and they'll shut the hell up.
DF still hasn't updated?! I've been waiting for the next update to get back into the game. Is military still borked?
So I've been playing a new fortress for a while and everything has gone smoothly so far. I've crafted one artifact already when my ranger (who also had some weaving skill) goes into a fey mood. I have all the materials for him except yarn cloth, so I have a dwarf sheer one of our animals and ask my dwarves to spin it into yarn. No one fucking does it. I keep trying to get my dwarves to spin the thread, picking up the ~4-5 dwarves who are idling and giving them spinning as a labor, but nothing. At this point, probably half of my less-useful dwarves probably have spinning. I get this message: I seriously might have an aneurysm.
Hah! A classic DF bug.
Messing around with info screens, the sort of agreement data I was displaying involved my returning a daughter to her father after a kidnap rescue. He was a scout hanging out at a hill dwarf tavern mound. The reunion might have been touching, but instead of the father running over and embracing the daughter, an unrelated drunk at the other side of the room shouted the daughter's name and then ran over and hugged me while the father and daughter stood in place crying tears of joy. It's fixed now.
Don't you just love 28 migrants arriving at the same time
Don't you just love 28 migrants arriving at the same time
My favourite part is when 28 migrants come. Followed by the one melancholy guy that made the entire migrant group tantrum-spiral mid-migration.
I always separate my fortress into quadrants, sort of like Vivec Cantons. I make the original 7 have a luxury apartment, and the next 3 migrant waves decent housing places - and the final one is Tantrum Village for a reason.
I am going to try once again to get into Dwarf Fortress. Any advice? And anyone mind if I add them on Steam and ask far to many questions on how to play Dwarf Fortress?

It won't take long for you to look at the screen and know exactly what you're doing

When is DF going to update :'(
Don't you just love 28 migrants arriving at the same time
I love it. Need those stone haulers.
Holy shit I gave it a second try and I actually did stuff, besides laughing out LOUD when I read some of my dwarves histories and temperaments. I really shouted "wow, this game has depth man" hahahha, awesome. I dug stuff as instructed by the wiki but I kept fucking up, it got too confusing and my dwarf got lost and I couldn't bring him back, fuck, hahah Z levels and channeling still got me weirded out.
It gets better, maynnnn, keep on playing and you'll get hooked. I'm just waiting for the big DF update - as always - to get back into this. Last time I properly played was DF 2012, other times have just been little games here and there.
How do I remove this stuff? I just mine stuff but they seem to be lying around and I want to set up stuff neatly, nobody seems to be hauling them upstairs.
Do you mean actually hauling the boulders? Hauling is a very low priority job, I believe the only lower priority option is cleaning. This means that you want a dwarf who's got literally nothing other to do who is basically a hauler (or several of them) to lug stuff around for you. Then there are two ways of disposing of it. The common way would be a stockpile set to only accept rocks (or even better, only accept chalk) which will get it. The better way preferred by more DF players is to set up a 1 tile garbage stockpile with "i" and then designate the rocks to be dumped (d > B > d iirc) whereupon they'll all be dumped onto that tile. Then, afterwards you can reclaim them (d > B > c iirc) to use them. Only issue is hauling takes a while, so wheelbarrows and such can be godsends. It's not that important. Or, if you are fine with the rocks being there but just don't want to see them, you can mass designate the rocks to be hidden (d > B > h iirc) which basically just makes them invisible, they're still in the same spot and can still be used.
I'm really getting cravings to play this, but I don't know whether it's worth my while to just wait until the next big update. Fucking dilemma and a half. Play now and potentially be upset cause Military is borked and stuff, or wait until next big update for an awesome time.

It's gotta only be a month at the max before we see the update, bug fixing can't take too long... right?
I tried playing yesterday, but had little motivation knowing the update is near.
I tried playing yesterday, but had little motivation knowing the update is near.
Haven't played DF for a year or something. How soon is 'near'?
It's been two years for me!

a cheerful book about the secrets of life and death also I wish I knew reanimated corpses made your party members mad beforehand. now I'm hiding in the basement of this necromancer tower while my party members fight the necromancer, I'm pretty sure they're going to head for me next if they survive. [editline]22nd April 2014[/editline] when a strike is "impossible" is it actually impossible, or is it just extremely unlikely?
How fucked am I if I were to mine a hole between that pit and the lava? [editline]22nd April 2014[/editline] Nevermind just did it. I lost a miner though.
you can tap into lava without losing a miner but its too much work imo I remove the mining profession from my miners, and assign a skilless peasant to do it
If I could put children to work, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Lazy no-good bastards, drinking all of our booze, eating all of our food, etc. etc. Put 'em to work hauling rocks, I say.

As it stands, the only thing they are good for is meat shields on female soldiers. Like Amazonians. I had a baby bite a troll's head once and cave in its skull as it was carried by its mom, though, so they're not ALL bad.
I finally reached the point where my dwarves voted a mayor into office. About ten minutes later a section of where he was working caved in on him badly wounding him. He quickly suffocated from what I assume are collapsed lungs.
