seriously, too much fucking gold and no other metal I'm screwed if I get attacked before the next caravan
Currently massed crossbow fire is pretty good - even with bone or wooden bolts. Not the best for killing, but it'll maim enough that unarmed dorfs might be able to finish them off. Or minecart shotguns filled with gold bars...

Gold might not be useful for a lot of stuff, but at least you can either sell the coins or smelt them to get your smiths more experienced.

Use the gold to make shitloads of crafts and buy EVERY metal object from every caravan and melt them down into weapons. Make use of cage traps, land mine traps (a bunch of floors on a support connected to pressure plates), and most importantly MARKSDWARVES to harvest the abundant goblinite ore that the Goblins so kindly deliver each year. [editline]25th April 2014[/editline] If you have sand make glass weapons traps. [editline]25th April 2014[/editline] Thats weird, both of my champions have purple eyes... One of them single handedly kill 5 goblin bowmen without so much as a scratch. The other one I use as bait with extremely good armor and around 20 war dogs as pets.
I finished the options I needed to handle on the information screens today. That leaves me with my "issues" text file to work through. That's the next and final step for this release -- getting it up to a state where it isn't an utter and fundamental degradation of the currently released version. There are crashes, optimizations that need doing, dwarves that seem to potter off without thinking in between certain jobs, and all manner of other trouble.
April/Early May release maybe?

I just wanted to welcome you guys to the dystopia of Craftcastles, AKA the fortress I wasted an entire day of my vacation on: [IMG_thumb]http://u.cubeupload.com/AFellowStalker/Craftcastle.png[/IMG_thumb] I'm just going to list a quick few facts: *Five Dwarves die every half hour, mostly because they're found sucked of blood or because they die in terribly mining accidents for my super projects. *The Dwarves live in a perpetual state of homelessness because the government (me) can't be bothered to build more bedrooms, despite the fact it's in their (my) capabilities. *Mining is the single most dangerous job in the fortress as I gleefully sacrifice even legendary miners for small scale building projects because I can't be damned to do it carefully (over thirty have died digging my wells) *Over thirty Goblins sit in captivity to be released into my gladiator pit / dining hall (bottom left) *Most of the Dwarves live in terrible low paying manual labor jobs, over half of them are working as stone detailers or haulers, their natural abilities being ignored, and nearly a forth of the rest are farming. *Even if I chose to mine out new farms to help stave off the famine and poverty, I can only mine by the migration wave as the miners I draft all die as they work on my projects. *The fortress is extremely opulent, gems and platinum being extremely common thanks to my strip mining projects. None of this is seen by Dwarves outside the dining hall as it is hoarded in the stockpiles of the wealthy. *I'm so rich I arbitrarily choose a few items off my stockpile list and then trade them to the caravans for literally everything I own. *Nearly 300 have died as I've perpetually fought off hoards of Goblins, Elves and Werebeasts. *My fort is too large to collapse as many of the Dwarves care little for each other and are used to seeing constant death in the gladiator pits or of people being scared to death by the dozens of ghosts. *I can't be bothered to finish my tombs as I'm too busy mega projecting, thus there are dozens of ghosts scaring people to death. Somehow this is my best game yet. I have no idea how my society hasn't collapsed yet.
I can't do that in a day, jezus.
I can't do that in a day, jezus.
It was uh... a lot of dedicated work. I haven't had time fly by like this in a long time. I basically just sat here reading and intervening when I could, probably where all the apathy came from. I literally just check the announcements every once in a while, go "oh someone died" and then go on, not caring at all.
who the fuck needs traps lol
Is that a jaguar?
Yeah, I'd guess it's a jaguar. Jabberers are pink Js. The square ASCII tileset probably changed the colour palette a bit, as it's a tiny bit more muted than the yellow I'd expect, which helps protect the eyes against braindeath when embarking on yellow / red sandy deserts.
I hope Toady adds the economic system back. Was fun making skyscrapers with incredibly lavish rooms at the top floors that only the richest dwarves could afford to pay the rent of. I remember one room I made was so expensively decorated that it cost as much as a legendary artifact just to stay one night in. Most the dwarves lived in 1x1 cheap communist bed squares and there were even some homeless due to the lack of jobs in a 200 dwarf fort.
didn't it result in laggy as shit fortresses as dwarves kept splitting up piles of money, resulting in tons of 1 coin stacks all over the place? [editline]27th April 2014[/editline] It'd be really sweet though. Perhaps it could be that dwarves have a money balance stat instead of actual items. [editline]27th April 2014[/editline] It'd be silly as hell if dwarves would realize they need cash and then go and do their job to get it. Imagine a carpenter just making chairs non-stop, flooding the entire fortress with them :v:
didn't it result in laggy as shit fortresses as dwarves kept splitting up piles of money, resulting in tons of 1 coin stacks all over the place?
That, and I think a lot of dwarves spent all their money on coins, making them homeless.
It didn't need coins to work. The money of dwarves was handled as a bank balance of sorts, there was no need to make physical coins unless you wanted to deal with the hassle. That was probably why the system was removed, temporarily (aka years in dwarf fortress development terms)
Is that a jaguar?
Well last night I saved just before the second elf caravan so I'm hoping they'll bring another and I can make a breeding pair to eventually phase out dogs and just defend myself with jaguars.
THIS is an impressive kill list.
just defend myself with jaguars.
A few hours on I realise everything about this plan just screams fun. Can't wait to get home and see if it works.
In one of my forts the champion had 36 notable kills and twenty other kills. He could also knock goblin crossbowmen's bolts out of the air, charge and defeat an entire squad. Then he got killed by a lucky spear strike to the head. God dammti.

God dammti.
Reminds me of that time I was playing adventure mode and I got paralyzed from the waist down by a crippled bowman after killing everything else in the camp. Ended up retiring that character.
Just started playing again. Made a new fort, first two migrant waves were pretty much mostly children due to the world being pretty young. The overpopulation of children was a problem until one went berserk and killed all the rest, before getting ripped to shreds by the 15-odd puppies I had in the room. So now my fort has no food/booze sinks, and I got a bunch of clothes to trade to the next caravan.

[editline]28th April 2014[/editline] My militia commander manages to kick complete ass with a bronze spear no problem.
Utilizing ultimate red army technique I armed my entire militia through combat. I just set them to grab pretty much whatever in the menu and as enemies die I quickly pause and claim the items for the fortress. Outcome: A militia of 50 charges fists first into battle, 20 hardened soldiers come back with weapons, an additional 5 were carried back wounded. 50% casualty rate, obtained roughly 40 weapons or so though. Loot fortress best fortress.
I generally melt down all the goblinite and either make steel for my elite squad or bronze for my militia to replace their inadequate leather armor.
leather armor is almost worthless, it doesn't really protect even against animal bites and you can't make a full set that covers the body unless you mod in leather gauntlets and whatnot better than nothing at all though, it's basically a feel-good armor for the player
I only give metal armor to recruits who prove themselves in combat.
