I had a dream I was playing DF. A dwarf got struck by a fell mood, killed his wife and then made an artifact. I clicked on it. The Artifact was made of Dwarven Bone, it was Dwarf Fortress. I promptly woke up after that.
Yeah, but they don't claim any workshop. They just get the strange mood, stand around then goes into melancholy.
do you have one of each workshops?
do you have one of each workshops?
That's probably it.
Yeah, but they don't claim any workshop. They just get the strange mood, stand around then goes into melancholy.
Then you're missing the required production workshop. Sounds like craftsdwarf if it happens repeatedly.
Still no metal and now my save crashes after a few seconds whenever I load it. Welp. :suicide:
You'll be able to do some stuff and get the basics down in a few hours if you work at it, but getting into a smooth groove takes a while. But that's why both this thread and the wiki exist; both are good sources of information and both are always happy to help.
It's not entirely cause for pessimism, though: I suspect a fort can be sustained indefinitely and without a great deal of fuss after food, furniture, masonry, housing, and passive defenses are sorted out - the industries and outputs one has to introduce after that in order to introduce more variety are entirely more complex to construct and maintain, but they don't beg much interdependency among each other - anyone'd have the luxury of slowly introducing each in isolation. Fun's no doubt still on the table - but I'd say taking it in at rates and scales where you can put them down won't stunt the cultivation of your inner dwarfiness all too much if you're willing to be ambitious with what you've already got in mind (that wonderful means of plunging into life needn't just live in the same tropes of magma-fueled drama, after all.) Why not avoid heading straight the cavern and magma spelunking and have your first mass industry be bulk animal farming, for one?
That much is very true. Truth be told, I tend not to breach the caverns in most of my games at all, just because I tend to over-prepare for everything.
Managed to fix my save. The search for metal continues.
So I upgraded to the latest version of Masterwork because fuck monarchs, and started a Dwarf game. In a swamp, but that's not really important. I get my third migrant wave and it's a decent size, and I get an already trained hunting hawk. Which... I never train anything to hunt. I basically just go 'get the kill or gtfo' and let the dwarves get ripped to pieces out there alone. I just don't care. But I had him already trained, so I figured why not assign him to a hunter. Hunter goes out, starts shooting up a generated creature, - through that creature generator utility that Masterwork comes packed with, can't remember its name - first two shots basically stop it dead. It's all mangled and everything, lying there begging to get shot through the eye. Whole deal. The hawk starts clawing the shit out of it and I'm like 'okay cool, it'll save the hunter some bolts.' Hahahahaha no. No. The hunter closes in a bit more and dumps his remaining, like... 20 bolts into the thing. There are porcupines with less shit sticking out of them. The hawk is clawing and biting and ripping and doing jack all. Hunter walks off, because hey you can't possibly carry a knife to save bolts or otherwise finish something off with. Hawk stays. It's been a season and a half. I'm not even kidding, this thing is still laying there getting chewed on by the hunting hawk, who is regularly yanking it around by its head. It has scales that are so thick, - and I guess it's so fucking massive - that the hawk is unable to do any significant damage by itself. It's shredding muscles, but apparently that doesn't even matter. This thing could probably single-handedly exhaust an entire siege just by laying there and getting maimed. [editline]30th May 2014[/editline] Combat log is up to 41 pages. At this point I kinda want to use DFhack to kill it, just to stop the spam.

Although i'm thinkin' that Hawks are good just for tangling things up, I remember my Arctic Condor Hen ended up taking on two Forest Imps only to lose it's eye and getting bruised in multiple places, even it's heart. But it stalled enough for my BowOrc to come over, plant a few bolts in three of their heads and just walk away happily. --- EDIT : Just had some good fortune with three dire wolves guarding the entrance. Nymphs ran in to try and steal something, ended up getting wrecked once the dire wolves got a hold on them. Beautiful creatures.

the problem with tropical moist broadleaf forests is that they're never very populated. every five minutes you get 8 Thrips Men/Giant Sparrows that wander in from the corner of the map and depart on the other side. this is usually why i abandon my fortresses in these areas. not five seconds into my new jungle base and there are 31 creatures. i cried as six chimpanzees ripped my miner's arm off and a hippo crushed my fishery worker's head like a rotten grape.
i cried as six chimpanzees ripped my miner's arm off and a hippo crushed my fishery worker's head like a rotten grape.
Hippos are fucking terrifying I've had a whole herd of angry hippos storm a fortress and kill everyone inside within the first year and to this day I still do not know how or why
Hippos are fucking terrifying I've had a whole herd of angry hippos storm a fortress and kill everyone inside within the first year and to this day I still do not know how or why
Hippos are actually fucking terrifying in real life as well, though.
If you've gotta choose between a pissed off hippo and nearly any other animal, go for the other animal, hippos are brutal.
Dwarf Fortress - Psychopathic Hippos
Masterwork DF: Kobold Edition Form myself up, have some good stuff and start thieving. "The Enemy has arrived and is laying siege to our fortress." Okay, it's dwarfs, no matter. I'll hold up, continue stealing Metal. "The Enemy has arrived and is laying siege to our fortress." Looks like my Kobold civ pissed off another Dwarf Civ. So I go and check how much there are. 104. Only 4 are wild animals. Time to do something extra Dorfy and see if I can hold out. Wish me luck. --- EDIT NOPE.
I should break out my copy of DF - MW. I need to learn a lot still with dwarf fortress, like the military animal thing. It would be really cool to have dire wolfs in my militia
It's almost here! After over two years in the making, we plan to release the next version of Dwarf Fortress in the beginning of July. We are very grateful to those that made it possible by supporting us financially all this time. Dwarf Fortress has become more than a game in the twelve years since we started. It is now a crazy art project that everyone can engage in! Whether it's creating the awesome mods, or helping newbies learn to play, everybody helps out. There are going to be a lot of bugs in the beginning so one major way to help out would be to contribute to the bug tracker. Dwarf Fortress would never have made it this far without such a strong community. Thanks to everyone on the Bay 12 forums and beyond for spreading the word. It's going to be a busy few months coming up so thank you again in advance for your patience and generosity!
MAXIMUM OVERHYPE
after years of saying that it will be out soon, i am finally right
except you didnt say anything
except you didnt say anything
Brace for maximum rainbow barrage, all hands on deck!
so it's coming out july 2015 then??
I wonder how long it will take for Masterwork to function with the new release.
Finally the day has come.
Finally the day has come.
No it hasn't, it will be coming though.
Brace for maximum rainbow barrage, all hands on dick!
Decided to start a new game in the latest version of Masterwork, this time in a haunted biome. Got slaughtered within literally 5 seconds of embarking by some creatures called anubites. The red colour of the terrain in the embark screen should've probably provided me a hint that survival in the first minute is unlikely.
