Awww yeah, one of the Dorks built an artifact mechanism just as I was ready to finally make my well. Time to make all my dwarves 100% happier.
[editline]4th June 2014[/editline]
Also the fact that a well can reach from 23 Z-levels up into the air down to a cistern adjacent to the cavern lakes about 15 Z-levels down is pretty hilarious.
It takes longer the farther it has to go, though.
How come whenever I try and get into DF after around 5 minutes I end up just sitting there going "uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh", Its like any time I tried and get into programming, its fun for 5 minutes then I get extremely bored.
The fun in DF is in seeing something you've designed and worked at for hours succeed (and then fail miserably/hilariously). If you're stopping five minutes in, you're looking for far too much instant gratification. DF has none of that.
Well, except dumping hostile creatures down 20 z-level pits. That's pretty instant. But that still takes some work.
So, any guesses on what the usurper of the Giant Sponge's throne will be this update?
This might be a long shot, but I think the necromancy changes will break something, and perhaps parts of creatures will resurrect as a whole version of it.
Children have gotten to be so much of a problem that I'm just ignoring any snatchers that come along. I've got an Artifact Mechanism in my well and an Artifact Armor Stand and Table in my meeting area/dining room so the dwarves won't even mind.
Does anyone have a tool or something for the old d40 version that lets one make walls on the spot or lava on the hilighted tile.

And it seems i found what i needed.

I hard cap my children at 25. Out of 200 dwarves total that's still a lot, but not a crippling amount.
I am going to go do a MW Fort in the north with dire wolves. (Stark Style)

My dwarves are just shitting them out now. I had 20 last spring. It's Autumn now and I'm at 37 in a 130 population fort. Aboveground. Making individual quarters(even 3x2's) is a MASSIVE pain aboveground without extremely careful planning. Did anyone see any mention if building things has been made more streamlined for DF2014? Just being able to place walls and stairs on floors would go a huge way.
Also if anyone doesn't know about making floors on the ground level out of paved roads, you should figure it out. It's far easier(and cheaper) than using individual floors.
Should I embark in a terrifying area?
Should I embark in a terrifying area?
make it scorching too. Or freezing, both are good

I find them to be the most fun. Just make sure you get a butcher's shop ASAP and preferably an atom smasher. And be absolutely certain you invest in at least one really good military guy with a strong weapon and preferably armor. I find Swords are the best for quickly dispatching undead things(temporarily)

Noted. Embarking in a tundra terrifying area.
Also, sorry for rating your second last post dumb, It was an accident.
-edit-
Managed to change that rating.
ALSO, it has now been four crashes with at least 50 rejected regions per session.
This may be a while.
Decided to play adventure, Got ambushed by kobolds once i had 3 companions. Just so happened that there was a champion kolbold marksman in the ambush and he killed me and my companions single handedly without me even seeing him.
Just started another character and my first task was to kill a vampire in the town i spawned in, He killed everyone else in the cottage he was in then me with only a sliver slicing knife...

For individual rooms, you miss out on a lot of value that way. Wooden walls and floors are surprisingly good at increasing room value. Past that I just prefer using constructions. Solves the issue of accidentally screwing up wall placement perfectly fine.
Also make 1x3 + 1 for a door, if you're going for a big fort then 2x3 is excessive even for normal forts.
i was trying to play Orc Fortress and i couldn't understand how to install it so i just copied over the raw folder to my LNP
everything is a confusing mishmash of orc fortress and regular df

hey look people are having the same problems i have :v
So I just started playing again. Generated a world called the Universe of Souls and embarked as an adventurer wrestler. How do you acutally throw people? I can grab them and everything, but when I try to throw them, my wrestler just adjusts his grip. Also, how do you wear stuff you put into your backpack?

Shift + W should be wear, if memory serves, it's the "standard" roguelike button for it, though of course they differ a lot.
As for throwing, I think you need to use a hand specifically, and some things just can't be thrown, it's not as amazing as it used to be.
I don't play adventure much though, so memory could be wrong, especially since the LNP offers a few keybind packs.
I didn't manage to do it, so I just jumped into fortress mode for the first time. Holy shit this is fun.
I started in a cold, wintery place, flat surface. Dug down one level to get underground and bascially tried to follow a tutorial to set everything up for the first time. Problem is, I forgot that this game has seasons. And my entrance was built in the midst of ice. So I just happily learned the basics, when all out of sudden spring arrived, melting the ice and effectively flooding my fortress, killing everyone inside. This is awesome.
Fuck yes, I played for 3 more hours and now I managed to build a fortress on top of a huge mountain. I've got everything set up: food, booze, lots of furniture. Although there weren't any traders yet, neither did I get attacked by anything. Does the mountain area have anything to do with that or does it simply take time for shit that is out to destroy me to arrive?
I havent found any ores of iron in any of my forts in such a long time. Anyone else have an issue like this? It's only ever tetrahedrite or galena etc and silver and copper weapons and armor are useless.

When you choose your embark zone, the mountains as far as I remember are represented as ^s. I don't remember forests so let's just say a forest is a F, and it's connected to the rest of the continent.
So if there's a zone like
^^^FF
^^^FF
^^^FF
And you embark on the middle mountain, you will not be accessible by anyone. No traders, no enemies, nothing. But if you embark on the edge mountain, you will be accessible by the rest of the world.

A sign from Armok, God of Blood! you must have a military composed solely of wrestlers!

Ah, that explains a lot! Thanks.
anyone ever experience this glitch? This is unmodded dwarf fortress.
Every time I deconstruct something something strange happens, materials disappear and stockpiles seemingly warp everything in them to the deconstruct site
I deconstructed a single dolomite wall and this is what it turned into

Just read the wiki there's a entry on it nevermind.
I'm late to the hype train, but holy shit, July.
I'm glad it isn't coming out before exams

I deconstructed all the floors on the ground level of my fortress to replace them with paved roads and the entire content of all my stockpiles got piled onto where the deconstructed floors were.
Are there octopi in vanilla DF?
With the coming update and multiple arm attacks simultaneously I must definitely mod in killer octopi

Silver makes the best blunt weapons in the vanilla game. Copper can be smelted with tin to make bronze, which is not completely horrendous for armor and melee.
