so, what is actually coming in the new version?
I've been considering getting into modding my own creatures into the game

Would making one block high walls with a floor going one tile in each direction on top prevent climbers?
did toady ever say how far things can climb? if you created a pit that's 10 z levels deep and was wide enough to the point that they couldn't jump it, would creatures still find a way to climb up (assuming the fall doesn't cripple them)?
Would making one block high walls with a floor going one tile in each direction on top prevent climbers?
We'll find out when it comes out. I'd think just making a wall and then building another wall or floor one space outwards on top of it would work for most invaders, but Toady might have prevented such a simple workaround from happening.
• People now have emotions instead of a one-dimensional “happiness” value — tantrum spirals are a thing of the past.
Speechless.
Man I've never been around in time to play the new update releases in the past so this version will be my first one. I'm so excited (and mildly terrified for my dwarves)
Speechless.
I'm anticipating that what he means by that is now the complex interaction of emotion values will lead to more enriched tantrums. Perhaps tantrum Mandlebrot spirals?
I'm still waiting for the day my dwarves become self aware
I'm anticipating that what he means by that is now the complex interaction of emotion values will lead to more enriched tantrums.
I'm still waiting for the day my dwarves become self aware
Urist is content. Urist admired a fine door lately. Urist recently ate a *Plump helmet biscuits*. Urist discovered the dark truth behind this false existence and went insane! Urist talked with his spouse recently.
Speechless.
i feel old already. "hey, remember back when your fish dissector would have his artifact soapstone trout hook misplaced and chop your mayor's head off with his fillet knife? good times"
The only issue with training a dwarven legion is that immigrants stop coming in such good numbers. Something about almost any useless migrant being drafted into a military where 99% don't survive the first year of training seems to be a large turn off to them.
• Dwarves will have “dreams” or life goals ▬ creation of an artifact ▬ taking over the world.
This is a Dwarf 28. He has been quite content lately. He has admired a fine -+glumprong venison jerky barrel+- lately. He has had a dream in which he ruled all the world, sipping dwarven ale out of the upturned skull of an elf prince while ordering legions of demons to fight to the death. Dwarf 28 likes pink opal, jade, dwarven syrup roasts and alder. He absolutely detests flies.
I wonder if Dorfs with dreams of world conquest will be more inclined towards positions of nobility

But you can't smooth constructed walls, right? I wish I could engrave constructed walls, make my aboveground fortresses more interesting.
Constructed walls are considered smooth if they're made with blocks. Same with bridges.
Well that's fine because it's a pain in the ass to make walls that aren't out of blocks now. Adding to easier to carry and getting materials for four, they're now better for invasions, no reason not to use blocks.
i still want an option to make tiger pits filled with punji stakes built inside of a shallow moat to fend off goblins
i still want an option to make tiger pits filled with punji stakes built inside of a shallow moat to fend off goblins
Channel out the moat, build vertical spikes, capture or trade for the tigers and pasture them in the pit As for actually getting the gobbos to fall in, I have no idea, maybe cover the moat with a retracting bridge
Leave a line of stone in the middle (hollowed under the bottom ofc) that has pressure plates on it with a repeater to make them delay a second or two and link the plate to retracting bridges on either side.
Speechless.
The tantrum spiral thing is probably wishful thinking. The emotion system as far as we've seen it means that now dwarves are just way more melodramatic and they can scream, cry, spit and laugh according to situation.
I tried embarking with Serene natural surroundings. Within a year I was accosted by a necromancer siege. A bunch of unicorns attacked the undead and put up quite a fight but were taken down. Then a merchant caravan arrived and made a huge mess before getting slaughtered. Now I have nearly 200 undead items, including a whole herd of zombie unicorns. Serene my ass.
I wonder if an expanded emotion system means I'll be able to use terror tactics against Goblin invasions
I wonder if an expanded emotion system means I'll be able to use terror tactics against Goblin invasions
I want to be able to put up gobo corpses on spikes to scare off others. [editline]5th July 2014[/editline] Christ what has Dwarf Fortress done to me
I want to be able to put up gobo corpses on spikes to scare off others. [editline]5th July 2014[/editline] Christ what has Dwarf Fortress done to me
I was thinking corpse catapult, but bodies on spikes works too
I want to be able to put up gobo corpses on spikes to scare off others. [editline]5th July 2014[/editline] Christ what has Dwarf Fortress done to me
Today I was legit sad that slavery was not implemented. Help.
How to immediately realise what DF has done to you in just two easy steps: 1.) Read this conversation 2.) Think the following:
Man, bodies on spikes could be so efficient if you skewered children as well.
