Me and DF is kinda like me and Eve Online, I don't wanna play but I just LOVE hearing the stories that come out it.
Screw it! After looking in Legends mode and witnessing the uncountable amount of babies get gored, eaten and burned, I feel a duty to protect these poor children. I'll put some serious effort into learning the game this time round.

Somehow, wrestlers are my most successful adventurers. Run at guy, gouge his eyes out, chokehold and strangle them, then pinch the throat to open a major artery and you are done.
Just out of curiosity, what was the cause of death at the end there?
Parakeet man ambush probably. It's always something stupid like that.
I present to you an Adventure Mode journey: resolution
Just out of curiosity, how are you rendering that map?
I just got with a drow "ambush" that consisted of 4 fully armed, armored and mounted squads. Fortunately the deep drow showed up to trade at that exact same time, so their guards and pack animals took out about a third of the squad near them. I lost the majority of my military orcs, and a total of about 20 or so. It got so bad I wheeled out the male dragon I had just recently got and had him start breathing fire everywhere. That actually was counterproductive, as it wiped out my trade depot and killed two of my orcs. I lost probably half or more of my war animals, but they were the reason I actually won at all. I'm mass-buying those bastards when the next caravan comes, and I think my front-line defense is going to be my magma hounds. They lost 11 drow - including the ambush leader - and like 30-something animals. My cage traps captured a few more animals and I think 3 drow.
Out of curiosity, how do you start a goblin/orc/whatever fortress? Modding? OT: Started a new game, so far dug a few tunnels at one level below ground and am getting the basic stockpiles and staircases/etc running. No bumps in the road yet. When should I expect trouble to start knocking at the door?

Except for maybe thieves and wildlife if you're in an area that has dangerous inhabitants, nothing will really mess with you until year 2.
Gah, so much school work and I haven't turned off my computer, Crowdedcrypts has been on my screen for two days. I finished up choosing everything and spawned, so my dwarves have just been waiting on the screen for ages in this frozen shithole of a map :v: Weekend now, time to mine! [editline]20th April 2013[/editline] Annual Ruinous-fun Urist Competition-killing (A.R.F.U.C.K) Award for fastest time in acquiring FUN goes to the honourable Mr Wired with a time of approximately zero minutes (not counting being paused for 48hours before first actions taken) on his fortress "Crowdedcrypts"- Everything was perfect- shallow and deep metals, flux stone, thin soil, plentiful trees. Everything perfect except the aquifer. Scotty (with his lacking observation skills) believed the area was a perma-frost biome. He knew there was an aquifer and thought it smart to break through it by freezing the aquifer with surface air. But for some dumb fucking reason, Scotty designated a meeting area in the cave they had carved out of ice... The season changed, the ice melted, drowning every single dwarf simultaneously. Thus ended, the indescribably short tale of Crowdedcrypts.
Just out of curiosity, what was the cause of death at the end there?
I didn't die, I just got bored and headed back to the fort to retire. I've been looking for something that would map out legends in an isometric view. Now, I must create some tragically short adventure maps...

I've had legendary fighters in steel lose limbs to cave dragons. Soften them up with crossbow support and try to outnumber them because one dwarf on his own won't fare well. You may take a few more casualties than you're used to, but you can beat them. If you're smart, you should have set up various partitions in your entrance so you can lure some in and then divide their forces. If that's not the case, just hope your soldiers don't get tired.

So I guess this worked out nicely.
just hope your soldiers don't get tired.
This is a thing. I had that kill two different badass orcs in my orc fortress. They couldn't be touched, but they were using bows and trying to bash through steel armor. Every once in a while they jump away and get a shot off, but eventually they just passed out from exhaustion and got slaughtered.
Man, don't you just love it when your local Kobolds and goblins get cocky and decide to try and ambush your fort simultaneously? Long story short, the local kobold and goblin population was just decimated by my singular lackluster half-assed squad.

Wow, when DF isn't all tiles it looks quite realistic.
Wow, when DF isn't all tiles it looks quite realistic.
The map generation is scarily good. Someone once used Perfect World to set it up so that it'd form landmasses similar to continental Europe, and the algorithms decided to place rivers in very similar places to where they are in real life. Here's the thread: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=61417.0 [t]http://cetero.net/worldmap_small.png[/t] Compare: [t]http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/euriv.gif[/t] Notice the Loire, Danube and Rhine. Creepy, right? [editline]22nd April 2013[/editline] That's right. Toady basically made it get rivers so geographically correct that it was able to decide where the hell they should form, and the path that they could take.
Devlog:
It turned out to continue to be busy, of course, since many internet people ended up celebrating the birthday and we drew 34 crayon pictures for them on Friday. Zach and I are also preparing for a trip in three days, for a CCP panel discussion on art over in CCPland. As I said back on the 6th, it's a quite intense month aside from the programming. All the same, I got my civilians wandering around and improved my world debugger so I can zoom in on the streets and watch them go about their business at the tile level. Next up are the guards and occupier patrols also under this framework.

a CCP panel discussion on art over in CCPland.
Toady's going to China? :v:
