how do I go around finding a beast someone told me to kill? I'm on the same square as it on the big overview map but dunno what to do now.
Look around for caves in the area, you should have a compass of sorts in one of the corners.
If I were to try and learn this, would I be best jumping into the 2014 alpha or just sticking with the old starter pack?

I don't know what all the things on the compass mean :v:
Fucking necromancers towers spread like a plague now
Fuck, I've got the baby bug. 56 unbabies sapping my FPS. And my fort was doing so well, too. :(
oh what, my maceman is getting into an argument with a group of people and refuses to yield.
this will be fun :v:

"where is the mace" says the guy which just picked it up
Maybe I'm an idiot and haven't found it yet, but I think you have to gather information yourself. If you ask for a quest, then you have to ask for directions, then you have to take the name of the site/region and use the filters on the map so it shows a line to the place.
That's what I've been doing so far.
oh great, they got stuck in a (seemingly) never ending loop of the bowman asking where the mace is and spitting on the macemen which doesn't know while they're not letting him go
RIP my maceman guide.

Learning fortress mode should be alright with the last version, because as far as I know nothing too severe changed, but if you're going to be playing a lot of adventure mode it might be easier to jump into the latest version.
I would wait for a few fixes before playing the latest version, if you're just starting.
[editline]9th July 2014[/editline]
wow, toady really thought of everything. prey animals like groundhogs have eyes on the side of their head, so in adventure mode when you sneak their vision cone is almost all around them, except for the back

So I find a lone hatch in its lonely little existence out in the wilderness...

...and end up finding what should be an entire dwarven fortress crammed into a 3-by-3 cell; all of them apparently happy to lay sandwiched on top of each other to make the most of the space. (Which is to say something remarkable about Tarn's own conception of an intrinsic Dwarven dignity; I've never seen such cooperation.)

Precisely how that many dwarves came matched up with so hilariously stunted a generated settlement is beyond me, though.

I wouldn't bother with the new version unless you already know how to play. It's really unstable atm. Not really a good place to start out. And if you really want to learn this, you can't just hop on and learn it immediately. You have to just keep picking away at it. Start small, learn the basics, and most importantly, ignore the complex stuff for now. At least in learning fortress mode.

Oh god, they're all prone'd. It's just a hole with dwarfs stacked up on top of one another.

Not to mention the wiki hasn't been updated properly yet, so stuff's out of date all over the place.
Not that it really matters for anything outside adventure mode, but it could still be a bit confusing.
So a moving glacier just killed one of my companions...
Some of the bugs summarized.

So yeah, after I lost one of my two companions on the journey south I lost the other climbing up an ice wall. He didn't want to follow me. So eventually I decided to sleep on the snow covered ice. Terrifyingly that fucker who was too good to climb walls shows up right at my side just as I wake up. Then as I begin to move...

Fucking glaciers. Shit was terrifying.

It's official. DF2014 now includes 116% more metaphorical messages.
"If a tree falls but no-one can hear, did the -spinning maple log- really hit Urist in the head, jamming the skull through the brain?"

In a few days someone will report that their entire glacial fortress was crushed underneath a glacier and Toady will receive a congratulatory letter from Al Gore. Calling it now.
My first attempt at adventure mode this update, spawn in an elf forest retreat, can't figure how to get off tree so jump down and fall off cliff, promptly exploding in gore.
Second life, get a hammerdwarf to come with me, kill a bunch of wolves together, see that he has a nice hammer and loads of Armour, stab him in the head while he sleeps. It's getting late, go to the hillock, literally 200 dwarves inside, lagging like shit. Go to sleep, wake up stunned, bogeyman going on a killing spree, go back to sleep. Wake up, everyone fucking panicking, running around. Declare myself as the killer of the hammer-dwarf and try to tell them of the nights events. Game crashed, I guess trying to shout to too many people at once is a bad thing?

The Binding of Urist
Also, I'm finally going to give DF (34.11) a try tonight. I've kind of resisted playing DF for a couple years because I feel I'd just get sucked into it RIP RL, but the world activation looks too fucking cool, and as someone put it a few pages back, best to get in now, because it's only going to get more complicated as Toady adds more bullshit. I'll learn on 34.11, which has lots of community support, while DF2014 works out the madness and mods get updated.
I'll come back with screenshots of the fun later. I'm betting it'll be quick. Yes I have the LNP.
That's what I've been doing so far.
I think once you get enough information about the site it will appear as a yellow circle/marker thing on the Quest map (maybe the Travel map too, one or the other i remember it was def not both). Also if they give you info on the site, I just use the filter option in the Quest page and [z] to it
I think I'll remake my mod when DF2014 is in a working condition. It sucks to have lost the stuff but I had some fun making it so oh well.
Is there any way to skip the "updating world" part of creating an adventurer? It takes so damn long for me.
My first adventure ends with a stray donkey kicking me in the head until my skull impacts my brain. Great game!
I was conquering a hall and a shit ton of stray cats came out of nowhere and started licking everything. There are literally like 20 cats running around this is ridiculous.
So far, my experience with the new update:
Generate a new world, say hello to someone in the house I started in, crash.
Start over again, save, shout at a goblin, recruit him as he's walking off and never see him again.
Spend a half hour trying to figure out how to go on quests, even longer trying to find a vampire.
Go north and head into the basement of a castle, run into some normal guards who I almost murder because I'm used to bandits.
Mistake a Goblin Commander in the basement as friendly and engage him in idle conversation while dodging a bolt he shot at me.
Pass out in the basement strangling an unconscious goblin chieftess in an attempt to grind up wrestling.
So all in all, normal day in Dwarf Fortress adventure mode.
