So I made an adventurer, a dwarf, and chose peasant because randomly generated fortresses are the devil. Despite trying to avoid this fate, I spawned in a fortress.
After exploring a bit, I go out into a cavern (only way out of the fortress itself), travel a while, find a lone Hammerdwarf. Weird, but whatever. She joins the party.
Go back to fort. Explore every inch, find there's no way to the surface. Find two dwarves in two of the hundreds of bedrooms. Decide to kill them for shits and giggles. Behead both, Hammerdwarf buddy only comments "This will not horrify me."
Find another part of the fortress a little ways down the cavern. No way to the surface in that. Find only one dwarf inside, in a bedroom, and it's a kid. I quickly find out this is the most durable child known to the world. 4-5 hits to the neck with my sword, doesn't give a shit. I knock him over with my shield, and then:

Oh shit. I step back, ready to fight my beloved companion.

Oh.

Ok take your time.
I've just been brutally murdering farmers and tradesmen who are alone in their homes.
One person got away after I slashed her throat and just sprinted at full speed (despite the blood pouring out of her neck) into the wilderness rather than in the direction of anyone who could possibly help her.
I attempted to follow but she was just too damn fast and left nothing but a lengthy blood trail in her wake.
This game is weird.
[editline]christ what the hell[/editline]
And that just got totally one-upped by me throwing a severed foot so hard at a guy it got stuck in his chest and ripped his left lung to shreds.
Yeah sure why not that's totally possible.
I've been managing to wipe out entire castles by cutting people's heads off with a sword.
Edit: Just encountered a bug after loading where my character started talking and fighting separately from my command, though this other personality was always in my tile. Eventually I attacked myself and died to my own sword. Metal.
So I found another random soldier in the cavern (an axedwarf) and asked him to join. He did. Us three went on a merry spree throughout the various isolated parts of fortress, murdering dwarves and cavern creatures alike. It didn't take long for both the axedwarf and hammerdwarf to "feel nothing" toward the violence. All the better.
Then, in one area, we found a mayor. Naturally, we cut his head off. Then, suddenly, the axedwarf i recruited became the new mayor. Ok, fine, whatever. While we were finishing off the rest of the fortress residents, he suddenly screams "I MUST WITHDRAW!" and is no longer listed as a companion. I give chase, and tell him to yield. He spits in my face, and I resolve to remove his legs in compensation.
We have a small chase, and then he runs past me in a tight hallway. Evades my first strike, but not my second.

After this he hobbled a few feet away and was promptly beheaded. RIP.
So I just spawned inside a fortress full of giant leather clothing. I was walking around and found a human, promptly declared myself as lord of the fortress and asked him to join me. When he refused I decided he must die, however along the way I had lost my sword, and this human unfortunately had his. Ever the courageous dwarf I bit him in the hand and then beat him to death with my fists until his head exploded. Now I had a Bismuth Bronze Sword.
I continued my search for the king until I happened upon the throne room. I approached the king where I told him of my Murder of the Human, and with one fell swoop took off his head. I noticed the fortress guard at the other end of the room. I walked across the room casually slicing the necks of everyone in the room, who were frozen in fear (bar the occasional arrow and spit). When I reached the captain of the guard I grabbed and punched his head until he died. I'm now walking through the fortress murdering all that come in sight and eating their brains. While I've become an evil fucking bastard slowly wiping out a whole fortress I feel combat may have become a tad easy...

27 Kills, all were single slashes to the neck or head. It was pretty much just a slaughter. And that's only one room.
Apparently you can drink your own tears off your eyes now?

Adventure combat is buggy at the moment. Almost nobody fights back, so you can kill everything with ease. It should be fixed in the first bugfix release.
Hey guys are there any graphics/tilesets that the new update is compatible with yet?
Hey guys are there any graphics/tilesets that the new update is compatible with yet?
phoebus'
and pretty much every ascii-based tileset should be compatible (like jolly bastion or cooz's)
you might need to manually merge the ascii-based ones though depending on how they're released, and/or manually choose the bmp to use in "/data/init.txt"
Mayday got a quick fix as well, really looking forward to seeing it get updated
Hey why does my DF crash every time it gets to this screen?

Is it crashing (giving you an error) or just freezing? It takes a long time to get through that screen.
I'll try to play this game for the first time now.
I'll yell here for help.
Wait it out. The calendar simulates the entire world for two weeks before you can start a fortress or an adventurer. Can take a while.

Are there any downsides to using tilesets?

It's not giving me an error, so should I just wait for it?
Are there any downsides to using tilesets?
for ascii-based, some of the text (for example: the embark screen) looks odd if it's not a pure-ASCII tileset (all letters/numbers, not graphics). like all of the periods will have a background when it shouldn't, etc.
otherwise no

This comment made me realize thats a calender:suicide:

I dunno, this seems sort of glitchy to me.
Or do all Dwarf Fortress players have keyboards with an 824693 button? :v:
[editline]10th July 2014[/editline]
I can use "-" to move upwards in a text selection menu, is there any way to move the selection downwards?
Just install my pack with the 16x16 square ASCII tileset with natural colours, someone updated it in the past few pages so go back a bit.

It's talking about the individual numbers, in reference to the keypad.

I waited like 10 mins with nothing happening, how long does it usually take?
Summary 0006708: Human civilization's soldier is an alligator
Why is this so hilarious to me
Depends on world size, civilisations, monsters and such as it is calculating the events happening. Also depends on clock speed of processor (remembering that DF is singlethreaded). With a large world and many civilisations, it can take ages.
With, say, a pocket world, it could be a minute.

Okay, I put everything on medium, it should be okay right?
It took about 30 minutes for my laptop to go through the two weeks on a medium world. Pretty amazing, yeah.
use the peridaxis errant pack, it's LNP but with some more stuff.
That's what I'm actually using.

It means use 8, 2, 4, 6, 9 and 3 (9 and 3 are pagedown, I think?) on the numpad to navigate, but punctuation's compressed out.

Auspiciously positive name. Too bad I've already fucked it up by accidentally building my entry hallway 2-wide pretty much all the way in. I'm in a calm area, so I should be okaaaay for now, but someone tell me the best way to block one half of the hallway off past the caravan path. I ended up building a farm separate from the main entrance because I had to dig a bit for a soil floor. Sorry for no screenshots yet, I got pulled into a game of CAH with people.

Voted most likely to go insane and start a tantrum spiral back in the dwarvenhome three years running. She's my farmer and cook.

Is this why i keep getting dwarves with broken hands all over the place?
