It appears i can only shout and not talk to people directly in front of me. Why is this?

move the cursor with the number keys, or if someone else has already talked to you, select "start new conversation" then move the cursor.
Someone on the forum just said this about the Demon plotting for the King's death:
Not to diminish your story or anything, it's very nicely written, but the screenshot the story is based on is definitely not from Dwarf Fortress.
Here are some problems with it:
You can't ask for rumors. You can ask about trouble, and you can tell rumors, but to my knowledge it's not possible to ask for rumors.
Sigur isn't a dwarven name. And I don't think that demons are sloppy enough to disguise themselves with a non-dwarven name, that would be a bit obvious.
The demon grabs the king, but the combat report doesn't say which bodypart the demon used to grab the head.
Grabbing doesn't do damage. Squeezing would be the right action, which you can do after you grab people, but just grabbing isn't enough.
Combat reports don't say "pulping it". They say "exploding into gore" or "collapsing into gore" or something similar which describes the action of pulping the body part, but they never use the word "pulping". I might be wrong about this one, Toady might have put that word in there for some very specific action, but I'm fairly sure that he didn't.
Adventurers don't say "I must leave." They say "Goodbye."
there's wren people flying in the sky
what's with all this bullshit at my embark site
Started a fort now that most of the crashes got sorted out. Fort Plungerack located along the river Pimplesaps. Random names.
Do I need to make a new world/fortress to get the new patch?
Someone on the forum just said this about the Demon plotting for the King's death:
That dude did some heavy diminishing.
Started a fortress on a Untamed Wilds plot of land because it had pretty much everything else I needed.
Start setting up designations
Flock of Keamen steal literally everything but the clothes on my dwarves' backs.
I'm getting pretty bad input lag in the new version. Any clue what's up?
Military just got a whole lotta harder.
Exciting new discovery: sent my military squad with basic copper armour and some training and skills to attack (an admittedly horrifying) undead creature. All but one charged, reversed course, ran away and let the, now solitary, brave dwarf die alone.
For example you can't just draft your whole fortress into an emergency army with the new emotions in place. They'll just scream in terror and run away from the enemy hordes. You need hardcore badass trained soldiers, or soldiers that aren't pussies (check their personality before drafting)
I like how Dwarf Fortress adventure mode is the only place in the world where you can "accidentally" explode someones head by punching it, follow it up with taking their body, butchering it, and eating their heart in a packed inn.
Is there a reason that my dorf that I assigned purely Brewing/Plant Gathering isn't building the Still?

Make sure he's not on break or doing something else that distracts him. Also check the still so it's not suspended (press q and go over it, and if it's suspended press s)

It was remedied by an all-purpose dwarf that had decided to create the brewery.
Oh god, is something wrong with my fortress? I have 3-4 miners and have marked places to dig out. Most of them have their picks but are just standing around doing nothing.
Okay scratch that, I have alot of jobs lined up, such as making rock pots, tables and brewing. People dedicated to those jobs aren't even doing them, what the heck is going on? There isnt any announcements of them unable to do the jobs. The only people doing anything are the few storing stuff in a stockpile, but thats about it.

bugreport
bugreport
Forgot to mention that it was Starter Pack 34.11
Is it just me or do plants grow slower this version?
Starting off my military. Gotten two migrant waves so far (smaller than usual, maybe the world activation changed their size?) and I'm at 21 total dwarves. One of my weavers is described as almost foolhardy in the face of danger so he's going to be my militia commander - ain't hiring pussies to defend Plungerack. An Axedwarf he shall be. I have iron all around the place so I'll give him the usual loadout.
Iron helm
Iron mail shirt + iron breastplate on top
Iron gauntlets
Iron greaves
Iron high boots
Iron battleaxe with a wooden shield
Now he needs a buddy so he can actually train up his skills.
[editline]11th July 2014[/editline]
My FPS is relatively low (30-50) even with a 3x3 embark and 21 dwarves, usually it's in the hundreds at this stage.
The trees coating the entire damn map with leaves and seeds etc must be murdering the framerate.
The bushes tend to be insane, maybe that's hurting the FPS.
-no its not the case-
Game is still unstable. I've crashed three times so far, the first when checking a dwarf's relationships and the second when a Weremongoose broke down my main door.

Okay so pressing Tab also crashes the game.

Save your framerate make those elves cry.
so goblins can climb up block walls apparently
guess we're gonna do this to old fashioned way
With the latest bugfix, I tried making an elf adventurer bow peasant. I started high in a tree, and couldn't figure out how to climb down (still don't), so I did a sprinting jump at a neighboring tile.
Turns out you can walk on branches, but not land on them.
I landed without issue on another level of the tree, only a few z-levels down. I tried jumping again, this time making grabs at the tiles on the way down. It didn't work, and I hit the ground with heavy bruising. I decided to wander off, in search of people, and got ambushed by a lone bowman. I snuck up to him, and shouted a conversation with him. I got behind him and began stabbing him, cutting arteries in his neck and severing a spinal ligament with the copper dagger. Since he shouted about how his wounds were horrendous and wanted terror to leave him, I said (still sneaking), to yield. He promptly turned around, filled me with about 8 arrows, and yelled YOU FIRST!
I still don't understand how he could loose that many arrows in a single "turn". I didn't notice the first hit knocking me out or anything.
The werehedgehog appeared again and this time I had my militia ready.
..
The militia commander couldn't hit shit because had no time to train with his pal. He somehow managed to get a couple of hits in with his axe but they were just flesh wounds and the werehedgehog bit his lower body and started shaking him around.
His buddy hit the werehedgehog like once and was then overcome by terror and ran the fuck away, leaving the militia commander to get shaken to shit.
Because I forgot to make a burrow, the entire fortress rushed outside to pick up something at the best possible time. The werehedgehog killed one guy and wounded two others. At this point the other axe-recruit had regained his senses, and the werehedgehog turned back into a human. He then chopped the human's head off.
So now I have three potential werehedgehogs sitting in my hospital, one which is my expedition leader, one my best miner and the third my militia commander.

Too laggy and crashy, gonna wait for more bugfixes before continuing.
