I remember making a trap that drowned merchants then drained out off a cliff.
How do I tell if an area has sheer cliffs? I'd like to make a sheer cliff fortress.
If you keep pressing tab on the embark screen you eventually get a local elevation map. In theory, you'll get sheer cliffs easier using that.

Damned elves.
Actually I'm pretty sure they just eat grass. Problem is, I have a meeting area outside, so they can eat the grass, but the dwarves have stomped the grass to peat...
Make a pasture zone and pasture your grazers where there's grass. Or just butcher all of them.
Carnivores and omnivores are inediate currently, meaning they don't eat.

theres also a screen that lets you check the steepness of the area
I don't understand, I have a farm plot that's fully sown, but I'm not getting any plump helmets. Why? Playing Masterwork
Did you change the settings so that you farm plump helmets every season around the year?
trying to figure out minecarts so i can securely haul wood from aboveground to the depths of my fortress
not having much luck
also someone keeps leaving pools of blood everywhere and it's ruining my fortress's aesthetic

How do you want the minecarts to function? I might make a small tutorial.
Did you change the settings so that you farm plump helmets every season around the year?
Yup. I don't have a lot of plump helmets, but I think it's working very slowly right now.
How do you want the minecarts to function? I might make a small tutorial.
it's not so much setting up the minecart but setting it up so its impervious to invaders, since it'll lead above ground

What about making the 'above ground' part inside a channel with a roof over it? Or just add walls and floors arround and above the tracks.
looking through my screenshots I cam across some artifacts this was particularly epic
What about making the 'above ground' part inside a channel with a roof over it? Or just add walls and floors arround and above the tracks.
does that work? i figured that creatures would be able to walk across the tracks and into my base
i haven't done any experimenting with tracks at all by the way
edit:
apparently my forts got a bad case of the werewolves

fun, going to isolate anyone injured (and drown them)
So I assigned a noble a bedroom worthy of his rank but he decided to sleep in his peasant bedroom, didn't like it, and it's somehow my fault.

[f]ree the old bed he sleeps in or [a]ssign it to someone else.
First time playing. Got everything up and running. Just moving everything into my underground fortress. Get an Alert. A necromancer with 2 undead human warriors/swordsmen and 2 undead axemen show up just as I get to the next season. I still only have 7 dwarfs but luckily for me the siege party just stays at the corner of the map. They just stay there so I am working on arming my dwarfs for a siege breaking dwarf team commando operators. This game is excellent.
Same thing happened to me. The siege lasted a year, but the zombies didn't leave after that. They just started wandering about, slowly diffusing through the map. Ironically this makes them even more dangerous than before - when they stayed put, I could go outside and gather trees without them even noticing me.
I thought, after a year, the siege finally was over. But it had only just began.

Did you leave harder farming on in Masterwork's setup utility.

Pft, comfy bedrooms, who needs those
Here's how mine look. 1x3 tubes with a single bed at the end and no doors or chests.

I want to make a surface fort that incorporates hugeass tower in the middle, something a bit like Orthanc in Isengard from lotr.

Mine are even more cramped, 1x2 tubes with a bed and a cabinet.

Yes I did. Thanks.

Tube master race. I give mine chests and cabinets though.

Also my fort was invaded by a fuckin' werescorpion. I managed to kill it, but two dwarves were turned into werescorpions too. Killed them too. Oh well.
I've never made smaller than 3x3 bedrooms because I like wasting time on making them look pretty.
jesus christ werewolves are the literally worst
my drowning chamber is filled to capacity with bitten dwarves
i can't drown them fast enough
edit: everything is just fucking falling apart oh god help me
edit: where did it all go so wrong
So I jump off some ice into the ocean below and I fail to realize the water is about nineteen z levels down and only one z level deep. Luckily I grabbed onto a wall or I probably would've died.
[editline]21st July 2014[/editline]
Wait, the water wasn't that far down. That's about how deep it was. Somehow I fell and just kept sinking despite being an expert swimmer.
[editline]21st July 2014[/editline]
And now I'm encased in ice because it froze.
Just got a 30 migrant wave.
Time to open DT
Is there a square ascii tileset that's working for 40.04 yet?
Is there a square ascii tileset that's working for 40.04 yet?
I believe there is one in the OP.
So a Forest Titan made out of snow with a shell came to attack my fort. I decided to round up all of my military to see how this would fare.
First hit punched the shell off of him. Next punch broke the skin. After that all the dwarves stopped being military. I didn't see an "enemy has been struck down" message so I can only assume the snowball shell monster dissipated after his shell came off and his skin was broken.

That's exactly what happened. Half the time I don't even see 'X has been struck down' messages and I have to wade through my combat logs and dead/missing list to see what happened.
a baby found his way into my danger room and got shredded to pieces, the guy operating the lever wont stop and nobody will move his body to his casket. the military dwarves seem to be ok with a dead baby in there though
