Oops.

My dorfs are working on expanding/improving the apartments. I've done this style since I figured out you could assign beds.
[editline]22nd July 2014[/editline]
I can't figure out how to establish a water source underground, since I have long winters at my fortress. I keep running into problems with water pressure when the snow/ice finally melt.
Mayday is pretty much the best
Too bad the Mayday one for Masterworks looks like shite.
Idea for a cheat-free vampire detection system: Construct a small drowning room with a pump in it. Disable everyone's "pump operator" labor except the one you wish to test. Start pumping manually.
When the task subject is on the pump, open a floodgate to let the water in, then close it as soon as the room is full.
If the dwarf is not a vampire, they will begin drowning. Open the drain floodgate (make sure it is behind a fortification so the dwarf isn't washed away). If you don't wait around then the dwarf won't drown, and can leave unharmed.
If on the other hand the dwarf is a vampire, they will not start drowning despite 7/7 water. Congrats, you found your vampire!
Wow. Okay. Well, I had an issue with bringing my magnificent adventurer Arazi and I haven't updated to 40.04, so I went back to an older save (right before I retired my fort) and kept playing. Unfortunately I lost a farmer who, for some fucking reason, got up out of her bed in the hospital and collapsed in the middle of the fucking hall and lost her baby. Then she spammed up my announcements with some shit about canceling rest to seek her infant. Well, long story short, she fucking died. Now her baby is wandering around being occasionally fed water so she doesn't die, and so far the baby's survived for three months. I imagine little Ast Inkycrests really fucking hates elves for killing her mom. I say this because her description states she finds nature "disturbing" and also values martial prowess, and she's incredibly brave. I'm going to guess that when she grows up she's going to slaughter the shit out of all the elves she can find because they're guilty of two things in her book: liking nature and killing her mom.
Of course that's assuming the little brat manages to survive to childhood.
Anyway, I forgot to dig out the tombs and I was busy building up the fortress/tower/pit/town thing I have going on, so the two dwarf corpses I have accidentally decayed. This has thoroughly pissed everyone off, but it's also proven to be an advantage. Their bodies are in the corpse stockpile right next to the road/path into the fort, so when some human merchants showed up and saw these rotting dwarf corpses they freaked the fuck out and dropped all their shit. This happened only with the ones leading animals and not the wagons (unfortunately) so I've received a bunch of free shit thanks to my dead dumbshit hunter and dumbshit terrible mother farmer militia captain.
Right now Blacklight's growing in size. I've got access to coal, hematite, dolomite, and a bunch of other ores and gems that make this site amazing. There's a brook that's flowing through, and there's also an abundance of animals that occasionally show up. There's also this... herd? of hamster men that sort of wander through, they seem to enjoy standing on top of the defensive walls before meandering down through the valley. Having grown fond of them, I've had to scramble the militia to defend them from roaming bands of dingo men and the occasional elven/goblin attacks. I've also been the subject of kobold thievery, but this is rare because apparently giant eagles really fucking hate kobolds and will swoop down on them and massacre them without mercy. Unfortunately I have just the one eagle because of the invasion, there used to be a whole flock of eagles circling abouve Blacklight.
A day of reckoning is coming, and soon the elves will pay for their goblin-loving heresy and repeated assaults on the good citizens of Blacklight.
My weaponsmith just made an artifact steel battle axe :o
Neat.
There are just corpses popping up all over the fort, most of them in the wilderness.
They're not missing blood and there are no suspected crimes in the justice logs.
Just as I'm investigating this, my announcements get spammed by "CANCELS MAKE BED: NO LOGS" x1000 for some reason even though as I'm scrolling around I see literally thousands of logs littering the landscape.
Then I get the same thing for seeds as I stare at a stockpile of perfectly good seeds, not in a barrel.
Now everyone is becoming unhappy.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENING.

Prepare for massive immigration wave.
On the other hand, that might be a better weapon than any non-artifact axe.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENING.
Considering that you're getting a thousand workshop error spams, I'm going to guess a severe bug is in place. You should only be getting an announcement per task failed, so unless you have 60+ carpenter's shops churning out beds (if you do, what the hell are you doing) there has to be some type of labor bug. Also, corpses shouldn't be popping up all over, and your dwarves shouldn't be just randomly wandering around like they're high on acid.
Check the reports, see if any of the corpses were fighting and what they were fighting. It won't say "Urist McRetarded has been struck down" but it will say if they were getting into a wrestling match with a giant scorpion or something.
Prepare for massive immigration wave.
On the other hand, that might be a better weapon than any non-artifact axe.
Except for an artifact adamantine battleaxe, yeah. Artifact weapons get a bonus simply by being such amazing quality, so a wooden artifact sword will hack the shit out of people, despite being made of pine or something like that.
I had an artifact adamantine short sword once, and it took a year to complete. When all was said and done, it had a huge description and it was one of the most magnificent weapons in the world. I made an adventurer specifically to use it, and then I went around cutting up elves and hydras. My adventurer finally died trying to kill a pair of dragons, incinerated shortly after managing to mortally wound both of them and they eventually died of blood loss.

Make the vampire a lever-pulling slave by locking him in a room with levers. Alternatively, make him run a pump. No need to kill a perfectly good immortal.
I've lost my ability to grasp and I've dropped my backpack. It looks like I'm going to starve just because I can't pick up my food.

I like to arm my vampires and dump them in the caverns. until I have an actual reason to USE the caverns. This practice has succeeded, and often results in a variety of dead FBs.

That is otherwise a decent strategy, except that you're literally arming the dwarves that are the most dangerous to your population.
I guess if they're sealed in there it's okay regardless.
Of course I seal them off.
[editline]22nd July 2014[/editline]
Apparently, 'Plump Helmet Men' in masterwork [sp]will rebel if they heavily outnumber your dwarves. They will go berserk and attack people, and some may even drain sleeping creatures' blood like vampires.[/sp] :v:

Not really. Artifact weapons get an increase in hit chance over masterwork, but the same damage bonus. Wooden swords are still pretty shitty.
My friend is playing DF for the first time. I told him about the carnival, and he's going there. He actually thinks it's a proper carnival.
I'm evil.

Those things are incredible if you're planning to make a necropolis.
So in the span of 4 days my dwarves had 8 children. It's pretty much been like this every winter so far, too.

More firewood to keep you toasty.
does that work? i figured that creatures would be able to walk across the tracks and into my base
I don't really understand the layout you're going for.
[t]http://puu.sh/amDop/10088e3a06.png[/t]
I was talking about something like this, the tracks are all beneath those floors, there's a single ramp that works as a quantum stockpile, the track stop dumps everything on it.
There are some ramps to the right that leads deeper into the fortress but those can be secured with doors, traps etc. If I'm not wrong, minecarts count as solid so they should block the tracks, or you can just propel it with rollers and let inertia deal with any would-be invaders.
Anyone knows at what speed - and needed height to achieve it - a minecart drops its contents upon impact? Trying to make a minecart shotgun. So far a 15 z drop hasn't really done anything to all the rocks inside the cart, Im having it impact some fortifications.

A reliable source of catapult ammo.
My militia commander just smashed both a goblins hands with his warhammer, then grabbed it's already mangled left hand with his teeth, and shook the entire Goblin around with it's hand latched between his teeth until he tore open the artery. I wish I could draw because this looks amazing in my head, definitely glad I got the military thing figured out, so entertaining.
