I've not noticed the trajectory of things launched by drawbridge being at all consistent, so it probably won't work. Always worth a try, though.
I wonder about the practicality of using a drawbridge to launch immigrants up into an aerial fortress
should I try and experiment?
Sounds like a plan.
Most will probably die though.
[editline]26th July 2014[/editline]
But that's what makes it a good idea.
Who knows, you might succeed in killing a suddenly-appearing dragon by launching immigrants at it.
EDIT: i'm not as fast as I used to be :c
sounds like everyone says its safe and reliable, testing will begin upon next childbirth

good thing I'm already at war with the elves, because all these trees gotta go. can't have too many wasted babies splattered on the underside of trees.

the hole on top is just in case they overshoot the mouth on the front of the building
Does anyone know if floors made out of wood blocks are softer to land on (due to density) than floors made out of wood logs, or is it still just "wood floor"?
I'm trying to reduce throw injuries while still allowing my recruits to spar, so I'm making a wooden floor.
I've decided my next embark location is going to be a heavily forested, perfectly flat location beside a river. The amount of wood will give me enough to build above-ground longhalls and stuff.

I doubt it. I'm always JUST short whenever I need a buttload of wood, even if I embark in a jungle.
the launchpad experiment WILL be done, but right after I made my plans and started building, the river somehow had a cavein and the bottom 8 floors of my fortress got flooded before I could get the flood under control (for some reason it just punched a hole straight down through six floors and crushed my liason's legs, then proceeding to flood the bedroom section he was in, killing 5 of my then 35 strong population and giving the liaison a slow, painful death by drowning which was funny to me).
I dug down to try and get some drainage after the river froze and I plugged the hole, and the drainage pipe happened to run through the first cavern due to bad planning. There was a single gap in the wall opening the pipe to the outside world. I set the hole to be covered up with walls and designated all the boulders to get gathered, as there was a lot of iron ore which I needed at the time for the war with the elves. This was a mistake. A forgotten beast was still down there that I forgot about, which came in just as everyone was gathering boulders. It killed 15 of my now 30 strong population. The kicker is that the one who killed it was the shit kicking dwarf who's only skill was as a novice potash maker.
Before, he was going to be the inaugural splatter mark on the tower. Now, he shall be immortalized as the first flying dwarf in dwarven history. I might even bury his body afterwards.
anyway, my only doctor is hospitalized with the other four people who managed to survive the beast, so they're probably fucked. Me and the ten good dorfs remaining will achieve flight.
maybe I should paint the tower of flight with some elven invaders

holy tits that forgotten beast had over 450 meat on it after butchering
Yeah FBs and Titans can have upwards of around 1k meat. Its great
Random idea for fortress defense, how do you guys think of the way this looks?

B- RAISING BRIDGE
O- WALL
+- PIT
.- GROUND
>- STAIRCASE DOWN
The bridges are all raising away from the staircase down on repeat, hopefully throwing intruders back, into the walls, and down into the pit.
Don't ask if it works. Building it and entrusting your entire fortress to it hopefully working is half the Fun.

Maybe skip on the fortifications and have high enough towers? Either way, having the draw bridges launch enemies into pits is pretty awesome, especially if you can manage to time the bridges to go on/off in sequence, three off for one on, or maybe two on two off?
That way the dumbasses not on on the bridges will be stuck in the middle pathing to the bridge that's down, and then they'll get filled full of bolts while they loiter.

If the wiki is to be believed, feather wood has incredibly low density, and fall damage is decided by density, as well as impact injuries.
This may also be helpful for operation dwarf-a-pult.
You could also have them train on the surface on the grass,it would help with the cave adaptation so they dont start puking all over the place once they get to the surface.

you shall be exempt from the next rounds of flight testing
[editline]27th July 2014[/editline]
it begins

The flight tests will resume once my new fortress is more established (tantrum spirals ffs)

the thing I love about bridges that big is that the person building it can get really close to dying of dehydration because of how long it takes to build
also if I'm spamming the thread just let me know, sorry
I got a migration of like 30 people (mostly children) which effectively doubled my population.
I just got a wave of exactly 1 person :v:
Is it normal for some children to have Legendary stats?

If your fort is very social then yes,Parties level up social skills too so it can help any under leveled traders.

So I just found out this while reading the fire article on the DF wiki
Artifacts constructed from a flammable base material can burn. As Artifacts don't wear away fire does no damage. Artifacts will burn endlessly without being destroyed. So long as the artifact is not stored in a bin water will extinguish them. If a flammable artifact is used as part of a building it can still burn.
I have to use this for !!FUN!!

Smoke causes unhappy thoughts,if I recall Boatmurdered fell partially because a puppy was burning forever and the smoke pushed a couple people over the edge.

Kobold and Dwarf berserker pheromone.
It's so efficient!
I had forgotten to butcher my cats, and I left the game running overnight. Thankfully somebody had a fucking baby, because when I came back there were some three hundred cats and the game's FPS counter was at a solid zero when I unpaused. I had to physically power down my computer because DF's priority is set to realtime and I didn't feel like waiting an hour for the task manager to load up.
Thankfully I had saved before I slept. :l
will stuff that falls from A tile above a minecart fall into the minecart, or will it bounce away from it? I want to have a burning artifact in a cart to create a wall of smoke.
[editline]27th July 2014[/editline]
Also, is fortress mode in 40.04 playable or are there still some retard issues, like (for example) people getting stuck in trees randomly/climbing randomly
Im waiting for 05. The less bugs the merrier.
Depends on the bugs.
Would anyone be interested in doing a succession fort?
If so, PM me.
