I just hope that by fixing combat he will make marksdwarves actually useful. Not sure if i am missing something but whenever they run out of ammo in the middle of a fight, they automatically charge the enemy with their crossbows instead of going back to get more ammo.
The military screen could use some simplifying because a lot of things there are pointless/useless and/or not detailed enough and just cause more confusion.
The trick is to position your marksdwarves so they can't path to their targets. Otherwise they just run to their death so they are really only good defensively.
XKCD, always relevant.

The first squad i will send is composed mostly of dwarves with useless skills and labour attributes.
Disable the mining labour from the miner so that he sheds the invisible mining uniform, then assign him a pick as a special weapon. If you're lucky, he'll actually decide to grab it. If he does, then he'll kick serious ass. That said, it's a fucking wereelephant, so you might be screwed.
(unless it turns to human quickly as they often do)
Heh, apperantly the weerelephant just fled after fighting a few tick men.

Wall building bug?
When dorfs complain they cant build a wall because something is blocking them... their own fat asses
Tonight I learned that my txt file full of my old dwarf stories got lost :/
The only way I can get it back is to take out my computer's hard drive and motherboard, (and by extension, everything attached to it) and re-insert the old motherboard and hard drive, just for the sake of taking a couple minutes to salvage that file.
I might have to do that one day. I need to start a list of things I need to one day salvage from that hard drive. I've already noticed that my old Minecraft worlds are lost on that drive.
Of course, I'll always remember the best of my DF stories, and I do have a lot of screenshots to keep the memories alive. But it would have been nice to still have that shit. I was just thinking tonight about drawing another comic based on one of those old stories. But now that I've lost that file I'm all discouraged.

I'm not seeing it.
So, I'm just being attacked by my third goblin siege. (I'm not good with Militia, but I've been able to keep the other ones off)
But this siege is strange...

and then I read this on the Wiki:[sp]Goblin law-giver demons may arrive on a goblin siege and are most of the time far more dangerous.[/sp]

Throw everything.
I just noticed that this siege doesn't have a single archer- or crossbow-goblin.
Looks like I can just raise my bridge and shoot them with my marksdwarfs.

My adventurer is the chop-master. He simply goes near someone and limbs starts to fly, but he's having issues finding this Vampire in this village. What is the best way, bar accusing random people, to find this beast and drink its blood?
Haven'y played in ages, what's a good tileset to go with?
Haven'y played in ages, what's a good tileset to go with?
If graphical tilesets are your thing, then probably Ironhand or Phoebus. IH is a bit more consistent and pictoral, but some people find Phoebus to be more useful. (less consistent, but it has things like gem rarity indicated on their tiles)
If you just want square ASCII, Jolly Bastion is popular.
There's also Mayday as a graphical tileset, but I don't know if it's been updated, last time I used it was 40d.
For somebody who's wanting to play it for the first time, what graphic mod should I get for it, and how to install it?
I looked at the pictures of DF and whilst it sounds cool and I want to recreate famines, the ascii looks just too weird to me. Something to make it easier to navigate with would be nice.
Get the lazy newb pack.
Install ironhand graphics and lazy newb hotkeys.

Why won't my marksdwarves shoot through the fortifications? When I assign some goblins to be killed, they run through my trap corridor and shoot the goblins face to face rather than through my fortifications.
Why won't my marksdwarves shoot through the fortifications? When I assign some goblins to be killed, they run through my trap corridor and shoot the goblins face to face rather than through my fortifications.
cant you station them behind the fortifications?
They have to be right next to the fortifications if they aren't highly skilled.
The problem is that when I station my dwarves directly behind the fortifications, the game just gives them a general area to stand in and some of the dwarves end up standing inside my kill corridor itself, beyond the fortification. Is there any way to force the dwarves not to stand in my kill zone?
Marksdwarves are pretty broken in that regard. The best way I've found it to make 2x2 pillboxes, with the walls made of fortifications. Connect them by underground tunnels, have a second floor, put a roof on if you think you'll need it, they work pretty well.
As long as you station them in the 2x2 box and there's a few of them, they should be right next to one of the walls and will automatically shoot at enemies. A second floor guarantees they'll all be inside and the 2x2 means they have some room to dodge. Really it's better to station them there and let them do the work.
I'll try that, thanks.
I decided to finish up all of the goblin site map notes. I fixed their (sometimes magma) leaky rooftops, handled their possible connections to places down below, various broken entrances and so on. I still have some things to do with their citizens and other innards. It's all pretty routine, and I'm cranking away at the pace I'd like to keep.
The roof leaking magma is so dwarfy.
