Another Devlog:
I've mostly been discovering and repairing broken gob map connections, which is a pain since the largest structure can be more than 150 Z levels from top to bottom (mostly underground). Any lurking bug can burrow and hatch later as a broken door, ramp or stairwell several routines down the line, and the routines are all seed-sensitive and so too-often disturbed by test alterations, producing a completely different map rather than isolating errors. Many sheets of graph paper have died in good service. In any case, I've manually walked a character from the top of the tallest towers down to... well, wherever they go, and I can create many dozens of gob sites in succession and the game tells me they are in good repair, though I expect problems to continue to crop up. I'm down to varying patrols (they only send out large clumps at the moment), additional residents etc. now.
These giant goblin structures are either going to be awesome exploring or a huge pain.
I thought it was a terrific idea to tunnel straight into a cavern, with a shaft leading all the way up to my fortress, protected only by a wooden door Troglodytes abound, lost so many people and the trogs are so infested in my fortress I just said fuck it and abandoned Also, what does *DwarfName* has grown attached to a battle axe" mean, I've never had that happen before
It means that they won't get rid of that weapon. Ever. Even if it's a wooden training axe.

Devlog again:
I've finished the goblin sites. I crept through the living passages and cells and out into an open bone carving cavern, then climbed down the garbage pit and through the discarded goblin skeletons into the first natural underground layer. After negotiating a few waterways (climbing over the pools along the rough stone walls), I found some more corpses in the water and climbed up a different garbage pit. In the second work cavern there were found troll shearers and many, many trolls... so that seems to be going okay. Next up I'm going to finalize the elf sites.
One more step closer to the next version.
I'm curious what to expect form elf sites. If they live anything like in LOTR they'll live in trees- which currently would be difficult. Maybe they'll implement giant multi-level trees now?
I'm curious what to expect form elf sites. If they live anything like in LOTR they'll live in trees- which currently would be difficult. Maybe they'll implement giant multi-level trees now?
Isn't he doing/done that already?
Isn't he doing/done that already?
Yeah, bigger trees are already in, since elf sites needed them.
Oh- didn't know that.
Fucking ghosts. I'm doing a hermit fort since I haven't done that in years, and I've been drowning/crushing migrants under a bridge and ghosts keep popping up. For a while it was fine, then a ghost spooked a cat to death. That wasn't too bad... ...Now a ghost just ripped off my dwarf's right arm.
Devlog:
At least half of these elf notes just relate to tree errors. I've stopped trees from breaking apart roadways and sewers, and some problems with indoor/subterranean map markings vs. trees. I fixed some tree display issues and made trees shorter at higher elevations, and some branch placement issues that caused cave-ins to trigger. There was also that error that has been around for years with the little elevated block that appeared at the top left of map sections on occasion, with the ramps on the right and bottom sides. I cleaned that up, and the resulting better edges have removed some of the squareish map artifacts in general, which is good. River connections still cause some overall blockiness, but I'm leaving that for another time.
There's also a new Future of the Fortress post and a transcript of the last DF talk. I don't know if he mentioned this before, but the world-gen dwarf fortresses will apparently be playable in fort mode. Beard shaving may also be in as a punishment, and Toady gave some numbers that estimate a release within the next 3-4 months.
We're getting there 3-4 months is close enough for me
Let's see if I remember as much as I think I do. Generating the world "The Oracular Planets", hoping it will hold up to it's name.
whats the best way to learn DF? i played adventure mode for about 30 minutes, and i kind of get that but i dont get fort mode

Depends on your style of learning. Some people like vids, in which case there are people like Captnduck on youtube, and there's my old favourite, the complete and utter newbie guide to dwarf fortress. http://afteractionreporter.com/2009/02/09/the-complete-and-utter-newby-tutorial-for-dwarf-fortress-part-1-wtf/ Hideously outdated by now, but the basics are still perfectly learnable from it. I've not bought the guys book, but I've considered it, especially since I learned the basics from that tutorial. Other than that, the wiki is a godsend, and people in the thread will answer near any question, unless it's something that we're clueless about. (such as how to create a minecart shotgun that fires silver warhammers at your opponents, you'd want to refer to B12 forums for that :v:) [editline]2nd July 2013[/editline] Hell, the guide actually got 4.8 out of 5, which is pretty damn good considering it's a manual. http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920022565.do Of course, it will likely get outdated (or does he update the ebook? I don't know)
whats the best way to learn DF? i played adventure mode for about 30 minutes, and i kind of get that but i dont get fort mode
Use the quick start guide, then refer back here if you need any help. Never assume a question is stupid, we're here to help get people into DF
As a new player, can I learn and play DF without having to use any graphics pack/changes? Is it not necessary at all but to just make the game look better? Also, can someone provide the link to the newest version and if necessary, patches or updates?
The Lazy Newb Pack is your best friend

You can learn without tilesets, though don't feel scared off using one if you want to. The one most important plugin for DF is probably Dwarf Therapist, which lets you tell each of your dwarves what jobs they can do, as the standard UI for that ingame is pretty goddamn clunky, being done from v -> select the dwarf on screen -> l -> c/m/whatever -> select the labour. Dwarf Therapist is in the Lazy Newb Pack though, so it's all good.
We're getting there 3-4 months is close enough for me
Although it's been 13 months since the last update already... :v:
Although it's been 13 months since the last update already... :v:
The day I can swing freely through the trees in DF, I will die happy
Hello, influx of new players. I hope you enjoy your stay in this thread and fall as deeply in love with DF as the rest of us have. It's been too long since I last played this. Any major updates that have been released in the past 2 months? And is military training fixed yet?!
It's been too long since I last played this. Any major updates that have been released in the past 2 months? And is military training fixed yet?!
Nope to both of them, though we could be looking at the update being released within the next 3-4 months. :v: I might have to start playing again, I've not been playing it for ages on account of exams and waiting for the update...
No major updates that I know of, DF2013 is a few months away [editline]2nd July 2013[/editline] Teeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerminutter
Is there any rasin why you can get everyone on desura but no intention of it being on steam for download? Steam workshop with dworf would be amazing.
Hi guys. I'm interested in playing this, mainly because of all the amazing stories I've heard about this game. Time to download the Lazy Newb Pack.
