they're obviously vampire turkeys
better kill them before they kill you!!
So I just noticed that all the eggs my chickens lay are turkey eggs.
wat
I wonder if they'll even hatch turkeys?
I wonder if they'll even hatch turkeys?
they did, I have a bunch of turkeys now
unfortunately the area I've settled in has been pretty, safe I've only run into two megabeasts in the past three years, so I've taken actions to have more fun

Good morning everyone. After years of reading about it, and now having offspring that are now on a sleep schedule. I am ready to play Dwarf Fortress. I realize that learning this game will be time consuming. Is there a specific starting guide any of you can recommend?
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
woo, new pc is finally here
now let's build it and see if df runs any faster
Learn about worldgen, digging, brewing and farming then youre ready
The rest should be a mystery to explore as you move through the game
Theres always here and dfwiki if you wanna cheat

God no. There's enough psychosis in the game even when you've got years of experience. Using the wiki isn't "cheating" it's cutting down the near-vertical learning curve to something that doesn't make you want to attach a rope half-way up and hang yourself.
The quickstart guide IS a good place to start, as it handles the very basics of some of the main UI and a quick fort. There's a number of things I've learned to do that go against the guide's suggestions, but it teaches you a good simple base to build from. If you have any questions, absolutely feel free to ask here. That's what this thread is about.
I entered a church and then this happened...

Someone on the DF forums is trying to make a dwarf visualizer using art assets that piece together based on the ingame description. This is one of the examples they posted:

Apparently someone also made a DF mapgen -> Minecraft map converter, that converts the elevation, elevation with water, and biome maps from the DF Legends exporter into a playable Minecraft map. Here's an actual map example:

Although truthfully the houses made of actual sand picture made me think of DF more.
It was inevitable.

It is terrifying.
I'm excited to see this dwarf thought overhaul. 119 new emotions sounds insane.
been playing by the quickstart guide.
my first immigration wave came and nobody's even died yet
the yak doesn't count.
I guess it's time to flesh out my dwarves. I'm renaming my mason "scruffy" because i told him to make a bunch of tables and he was like "naw. on break."
[editline]2nd October 2014[/editline]
maybe if i get more attached to them, the game becomes more Fun.
I always butcher my yak straight up because I know that fag will be dead within a year no matter how well I take care of him. Usually starvation due to stupidity.
Just put it in a pasture where there's grass. It's not rocket science.
Is there a trick to finding dwarven underground roads to embark on in fortress mode? I wanted to build my entire fortress around one and re-create Polis from Metro.

Even so to be honest, they're not worth it. Grazers in general aren't worth it, although I haven't played since Toady fixed their mechanics. I wait until I'm established, but I still butcher the pack animals you start with.
I usually just use eggs as a meat source, invaders/megabeasts usually just kill any grazers I have outside anyway.

Apparently this is in Shadow of Mordor

Getting into Dwarf Fortress for the first time in a couple months, got a quick question:
What is the best way to completely ruin the world? Is it possible?
Like, somehow cause the destruction of everything

An already generated world? not that I know of, but a new world. Just make a butt load of evil squares, shit ton of savagery and volcanoes and mega beast caves everywhere.

Go into adventure mode and kill all living beings.
So no flooding the world or having Clowns escape from the circus and spreading?
