Because it's an awesome game and I want to get into it sometime.
Point. Put aside an afternoon, once you get the hang of it, its great. I'd suggest using a tile-set like phobeus, makes it a lot easier to understand.
Why don't you just deconstruct the depot instead? Same thing, just less corpses and ghosts.
Where's the fun in that?
After getting a tileset and spending some time with the game, I found learning the basics easier than I had imagined. Starting your first fortress without using any tutorials has a really nice feel to it. I love DF. And it all started with you guys and your amazing stories :v:
Where's the fun in that?
Everyone has a different definition of fun, as much as people like to (jokingly usually) infer otherwise. Losing isn't fun to me. If it's going to be a loss I want it to essentially be on my terms. Like a titan attacking and me going "Oh fuck it, draft everything" and sending 100 kobolds in a huge swarm after it. The mental picture of something 50+ feet tall freaking out and swatting at these little 3-4 foot lizards that are swarming him like ants would make it worth it if that was the end of my fort. If it's a fuck up that I can't recover from, fine. I'll accept that. But that doesn't mean it's fun. Not every loss has to be fun. Sometimes stuff's just bullshit and I get pissed off and stop playing. Although that honestly goes for any Roguelike, fuck SLASH'EM for drowning my last character. [editline]22nd October 2014[/editline] Seriously I haven't played NetHack since like June because of that, fuck you hellhounds. I knew I should have genocided you fucks.

Recent example: Master miner goes into secretive mood not long after fort is settled, takes over metalsmith workshop and starts drawing pictures of metal bars. Send remaining miner to dig for ore, instead find cavern complete with fell beast, which starts eating it's way back towards the fort proper. Two things happen at once. 1: Fell beast reaches crafting floor, 2: Master miner finally snaps and goes berserk. The ensuing fight covers most of the crafting floor in blood, teeth and ???'s, fell beast breaks both miners arms before dying of a critical kick to the head. Attempts are made to restart production, but three more dwarves die by the feet of urist face stamper before the decision is made to wall him in there and wait for him to starve. When he finally croaked, I didn't have the heart to reopen said floor. Instead I had his coffin built on the exact spot he died, then walled off again. I sometimes wonder what He would have made if he'd got his hands on what he wanted. I like to imagine it would have been some masterworked boots.

DF 0.40.14 is out http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/
Here is the next release. The focus was not bugs this time, but rather completing the work started on emotions as well as basic fruit harvesting. A note -- adding stepladders to old saves was not possible, so you'll have to wait for a new world for those. Fallen fruit can still be gathered in old saves using the new plant gathering zones. Dwarves in old saves have also had their current thoughts wiped clean to make way for the new emotion/circumstance pairs. New stuff Dwarf thoughts have been replaced with personality-dependent emotion/circumstance pairs Dwarf happiness has been replaced by a longer-term stress level, and a few new effects have been added Plant gathering zones can be used to set up fruit harvesting from trees using the new stepladder Plant gathering zones can also handle the old shrub jobs, and fallen fruit can also be gathered from zones Shrubs now have their berries/etc. gathered properly (bean-type plants that only have edible seeds are still an issue) As a stopgap, farm plot plants yield viable growths out of season upon harvest In adventure mode, it is possible to ask about people about yourself, other people, and how they are feeling Other bug fixes/tweaks Stopped IMMOBILE creatures from trying to flee terrain Fixed problem with fear vs. stating proper opinion Stopped harvest/plant jobs from being added to farms slated for destruction Deconstructed farm plot loses items
[editline]25th October 2014[/editline]
This is going to be the edgiest update in years!
Coldsteel the Dwarf has been miserable lately. He complained about his parents lately. He has admired a fine Linkin Park album recently.
This dwarf really loves his bed.
This dwarf really loves his bed.
The fact that all these words are highlighted really adds some connotations to the fact that this guy loves his bed.
Interesting, one of my blacksmiths attacked and killed a honey badger for what seems as revenge. Possibly either for the friend that died to the werebuffalo before, or maybe because this badger attacked one of the chickens (even though it missed it completely)? [editline]26th October 2014[/editline] no wait oh shit all of my dwarves are feeling vengeful when joining an existing conflict what is going on every single fucking dwarf is thinking about "having revenge!" [editline]26th October 2014[/editline] all of the thoughts disappeared now, they're back to normal perhaps the dwarves felt like they wanted to join the fight between the blacksmith and the honey badger
Dwarven hivemind
A pretty standard underground fort going on at the moment. My site has no iron or copper so I can't actually dig my own metals for weapons and armor. I'm forced to buy iron, bronze and steel crafts from the merchants and melt them down in my smelters (1 level down from this main level), and simply buy pure metal bars from them. Military is currently 4 strong - a professional hammerdwarf, a skilled hammerdwarf, a novice axedwarf and a talented speardwarf. They are armored with a mix of metals, mostly bronze, steel and iron. The axedwarf is still in leather armor due to the scarcity of metal and because I prioritize the best soldiers first. 72 dwarves in total in this fortress and the FPS is holding at a steady 170 (50 in-game to not make it play out super fast). So there is still a lot of leeway for it to drop. [thumb]http://horobox.reager.org/u/orkel_1414389693.png[/thumb] [editline]26th October 2014[/editline] Oh and I accidentally made a cock tomb and didn't realize it until two hours later. I don't have anything to do now. I planned to build a Boatmurdered style lava trap but there's no lava to be seen. Gimme stupid dorf tricks please.

The FPS is going between 100 and 170 now because there's a forgotten beast in the cavern killing literally everything in there, so there's a metric fuckton of miasma from the corpses causing calculations, and even fires and smoke caused by the fire imps that it's attacked adding even more strain.
The new thoughts:
DF 0.40.14 is out http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/ [editline]25th October 2014[/editline]
I swear to god that one day Toady's gonna do some more coding, fire it up to test and the Dwarves are suddenly self aware but unable to do anything outside of DF, running around and doing everything to keep themselves alive.
I can't imagine the joy of finding a dwarf that gets happy thoughts of murdering shit. He'd do such an amazing job at military. [editline]26th October 2014[/editline] How would Dwarf Therapist go and handle this new system? I guess the tool is broken for now, seeing how the entire emotion system has been thrown around. Does it still function with just the happines not being visible or does the entire tool refuse to work now?
Therapist and DFhack have not been updated for the new version yet. I don't know how it will work but I guess it needs a big overhaul. On another note, my hammerdwarves have both become hammer lords, and my speardwarf is now a spearmaster. The axedwarf has also become a professional but he's not quite at the axelord level yet. The squad has been joined by a novice swordsdwarf. A minotaur has arrived - let's see how these guys can handle it. [editline]26th October 2014[/editline] RIP spearmaster. The minotaur punched him in his weapon arm and the arm exploded. He dropped his artifact steel spear and fell to the ground in pain. The minotaur tried to pierce his head with his horn but the bronze helmet blocked it - but then it ripped off his iron greaves and smashed his head in with them. [thumb]http://horobox.reager.org/u/orkel_1414383126.png[/thumb] My other soldiers are now feeling trauma and vengeance. This is pretty much how all of my military looks atm:
after killing 3 eleven caravans and all the diplomats I've finally been warned to stop chopping down trees
I have to kill that forgotten beast, it's annoying me with its constant combat reports. I'm sending 2 hammer lords, 1 swordsmaster, 1 axe lord, 1 speardwarf and 1 swordsdwarf against it, supported by 3 marksdwarves with crossbows. I've created a wide tunnel leading to the cavern where I will station everybody before breaching the cavern to allow it to attack. The beast is a gigantic quadruped made out of crystal glass, and it shoots webs. It's killed hundreds of creatures in the cavern so far, the kicks are insane and tend to send anything flying into a wall. Hopefully they can kill it before it makes anyone explode with a kick. The soldiers are now in place, sending in the breacher miner
I'm gonna laugh when it kicks a hammerdwarf into another hammerdwarf prompting both of them to explode
It killed every single member of my military in about 2 seconds, seriously. A bunch of full steel plate armored legendary soldiers all dead in 2 seconds, and then it rushed my marksdwarves while completely ignoring the rain of bronze bolts and killed everyone except one, which it somehow didn't notice as the beast had already had reached the stairs. After freeing himself from the webs, that lone marksdwarf is still stationed in the battle tunnel, standing in the middle of his friend's corpses. And what is he thinking after the carnage? [editline]27th October 2014[/editline] what the FUCK it killed like 40 more dwarves before a FARMER HACKED IT'S BODY IN HALF Fortress Tubedikes shall rebuild [editline]27th October 2014[/editline]
forgotten beasts that can shoot web are basically fortress death sentences
It's not over yet! A few more dwarves died in the hospital with a couple there permanently, one dwarf went mad and babbling and roams the mining tunnels, there's a bunch of ghosts scaring everyones balls off, a dozen dwarves are stressed and yelling at the mayor repeatedly, but I have new recruits in the military using the previous dwarves' bloody armor and weapons and the corpses are almost all buried. The population dropped from 120 to ~65 overall.
I now have finally made an okay dwarven settlement, after one or two weeks of dying of hunger, elephants, or goblin raids. Sure i have pretty much zero booze and my dwarves are having to drink vomit, but i'm proud. Now to get a successful army up.
lmao one of my herbalists used a stepladder to go up a tree to collect fruits another dwarf took the stepladder away and he dehydrated to death on top of the tree [editline]27th October 2014[/editline] an incredibly tough planter couldn't take the stress and started tantruming hardcore, killed 5 dwarves before being beaten to shit by my guard captain and then thrown to jail for 300 days the planter is haggard and drawn in the jail [editline]27th October 2014[/editline] the planter is now "oblivious to reality" and stumbling around in his chains, i bet he'll walk into a lake once he is set free in 262 days [editline]27th October 2014[/editline] hes back to normal now, i guess that was a temporary crazy episode [editline]27th October 2014[/editline] now he's suffering from depression [editline]27th October 2014[/editline] 125 days to go

My only foray into the game was the older version last year, and then only adventure mode. I made a dwarf who got murdered by a boar and ten geese.
