There are only 6 dwarves left in my fortress, every single one of them have witnessed every friend and relative die before their eyes and there is one fisher dwarf who is ESCSTATIC. How is this possible. That must have been a really nice seat and a really nice cabinet.
So I just got an announcement that a dwarf arrived at my fortress. He was a legendary blinking @ icon though and my workers ran away from him, so I'm assuming witchcraft he ran away immediately so I didn't find out unfortunately

It's a were-dwarf. He arrived in his un-transformed state, I guess that's a pretty common thing, I've had it happen before once or twice.
I'd love to watch him transform...
Haha yeah that's exactly what happened to me in reverse. Some were-creature attacked and my military got into a life or death struggle (death) in the entrance before it magically turned into some woman and they successfully killed it, but not before it bit one of my soldiers.
I embarked and there's a herd of giant flying squirrels just a little bit away from my wagon I just hope they aren't aggressive [editline]4th March 2013[/editline] forget that, they're nothing compared to my hunter
so I tried to make an animal-man fortress by editing entity_default blind-cave-fish-man fortress was not what I was hoping for
My friend once had a tiger-man fortress, when migrants arrived, they immediately killed them all off. The fortress was short lived.
Was just playing adventure mode (for the first time); after killing a few STRAY goats/rams/what-have-you, I was attacked and butchered by villagefolk. What gives? Do villagers occasionally attack on sight for reasons only they know of? OR do humans "own" animals (EG fortress mode's pets)? If townsfolk can own animals, like a goat, why would the goat be "stray"? I won't find out how valuable goat, ram, and other assorted meats are tonight..

Stray animals are owned by the civilization, they will all murder you if you so much as touch one of their goats.
You walked on to somebodies farm and killed all their animals
They didn't adopt, name and hand-feed every goat so they weren't their pets and must have been wild animals. Haven't you ever been to a farm?
Attacking animals in settlements makes you an enemy of that civ

If one more person advertises a game as having Dwarf Fortress elements or being like Dwarf Fortress then I'm going to start a Tantrum Spiral. "This game's sort of hard and has procedural generation JUST LIKE DWARF FORTRESS" RearAdmiral cancels post: Went Insane

Even Toady recognizes it, he just doesn't really care about it anymore.

Thanks for the answers everyone. Too bad, though, i just started out surrounded by stray chickens.. @Devodiere: Yes, I've done farm work; strays aren't considered the owner's property. AAMOF i've seen strays put down for pestering goats. #farmsaregreat [editline]4th March 2013[/editline]
If one more person advertises a game as having Dwarf Fortress elements or being like Dwarf Fortress then I'm going to start a Tantrum Spiral. I find it harder to play honestly.
so I'm running the masterwork mod my cave-monster murdering war-drakes are making babies :3 also my expedition leader was dragged underwater by a soulless cavern creature and had her neck broken. My militia captain managed to drag her out but I'm pretty sure she's not gonna make it. also a bunch of satyrs somehow fell down a waterfall so it's just bad for everyone

[editline]5th March 2013[/editline] Oh God I apologize for that one, I just woke up. My humor control hasn't initialized yet.
That was terrible and ewe should feel bad.
Way to ram that pun into a sentence, it baaarely made sense.
Okay guys, what are some good mods that will get me into playing DF again without destroying the vanilla feel?
Okay guys, what are some good mods that will get me into playing DF again without destroying the vanilla feel?
I'd have to recommend Masterwork, really. It's a giant mod compilation, and has a settings menu where you can individually turn each feature on or off. Comes with a variety of tilesets and built-in utility programs. Includes new trees, items, engravings (and other fluff content,) a tradeable Drow race, a playable evil Orc race, playable Kobolds (with their own unique buildings!), religious/magic buildings, more high-tier ores, Dwarves can use and embark with surface crops, plantable trees, craftable mechanical golems and turrets, guns, useful alchemy, more reactions, etc etc etc
Masterwork is also one of the mods I'd say destroys the vanilla feel. :v: It all depends on how much you keep enabled... and about 90% of Masterwork is incredibly stupid shit.
