Building in rock tends to be much better, as you get rocks, and can later smooth and engrave the walls to increase room value (and make dorfs happy) and plants and stuff won't grow on it later. It's slower to dig than dirt though. If you've done dorms / bedrooms and a dining hall, you might want to go for some stockpiles, or walls. I always find myself kind of stumped at what to build next, and it tends to end up as "whatever I feel like" :v: Oh, you will want your farms in dirt though, as you've got to get stone wet to plant things on it. To be honest, 4 5x5 fields or so should be perfectly adequate for the first few years, especially if you use cooked meals and birds eggs.
A floor down I'm making a stockpile floor for everything. Just made a few walls and a trading depot right next to the entrance to the fortress. The farm above the workshops is on dirt so I'm good there. [editline]4th July 2013[/editline] Also, why do my animals starve and thirst to death? My dwarfs get food and stuff automatically, doesn't the animals do that as well?
After my recent fort collapsed, I decided to take a break from fort mode and try adventurer mode. I decided to play a dwarven wrestler. I began my quest by asking for people to join me. I found a small settlement and got a human mechanic to join me. Our mission was to take out a bandit that had been giving the village trouble. However, on the way, we were ambushed by a Sasquatch. It was beating the crap out of my pal the human, so I wrestled it off of him, which gave the human time to stab the Sasquatch repeatedly. I then pinched it's tongue off because I was pissed at it for trying to hurt my pal. I guess a sasquatch's weakness is tongue pinching :v:
How do I get my stray hunting dogs to hunt? Keep in mind that I don't have any hunters.
What should I plant in my farms during the different seasons? I don't know anything about any of the crops so I just choose them randomly
What should I plant in my farms during the different seasons? I don't know anything about any of the crops so I just choose them randomly
Plump helmets and dimple cups, all year round!
How do I get my stray hunting dogs to hunt? Keep in mind that I don't have any hunters.
Hunting dogs don't hunt on their own. They accompany hunters and help them hunt while being stealthy and all that. [editline]3rd July 2013[/editline]
Plump helmets and dimple cups, all year round!
But you can't eat/brew dimple cups.
Once you get a bit more experienced with farming, be sure to plant other crops like cave wheat (do a crop rotation kinda thing because cave wheat can only be grown in the fall and summer). It can be brewed into dwarven beer and it'll give some variety to your dwarves' alcohol.
Plump helmets and dimple cups, all year round!
Then what is the point of cave wheat and other crops?
So much activity I'm so happy I might shed a tear
You can make large pots instead of barrels. They can be made out of stone too. Large pots have way more storage capacity and they are easier to make. The only issue is that barrels are needed to make dwarven syrup and needed to build a few workshops. So just keep a few spare barrels and keep all your food in pots.
Then what is the point of cave wheat and other crops?
I'm not really experienced with crops either, only thing I know is that you can easily survive by only growing plump helmets.
How do I train up people as hunter? And not? What use has dimple cups?
You assign them the hunting job. They need a crossbow, quiver and bolts. You can make dye out of dimple cups which you change the color of cloth/thread with. That's it.
Then what is the point of cave wheat and other crops?
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Crop [editline]3rd July 2013[/editline]
So much activity I'm so happy I might shed a tear
This isn't anything compared to the DF threads back in 2008 :v:
And now begins my confrontation with the bandit leader. I began the fight by disarming his two lackeys and tossing their weapons away. I then tossed the lackeys themselves away into nearby trees, which stunned them and effectively removed them from combat. It was at this moment I noticed that the boss had killed my pal! YOU ARE FUCKED UP NOW [editline]3rd July 2013[/editline] As I began my super secret verboten technique of nose pinching, a soldier of his that I hadn't noticed before snuck up and stabbed me. In addition to this, those previous lackeys weren't as incapacitated as previously thought. This isn't good. [editline]3rd July 2013[/editline] I disarmed the pikeman and threw his weapon back at him. Unfortunately for me, he dodged out of the way. Fortunately for me, his boss was right behind him. [editline]3rd July 2013[/editline] Damn, I was sure that would work [editline]3rd July 2013[/editline] The boss began to make his escape, so after running out of things to throw, I began to charge after him. Then, out of nowhere, a bolt hit me. There had been a crossbowman on the sidelines of this fight the entire time. I was mortally wounded and the boss who had murdered my pal was getting away. If I wanted to get him, I would have to act quick.
This isn't anything compared to the DF threads back in 2008 :v:
thems was the days, pal
I'm fairly new and I'm wondering if there are any disadvantages with building things on rock which I've done with my dining hall and sleeping halls? Also, any tips to what to do now?
dwarves ain't some pussy ass elves, they love it when you build things out of rocks wood is for the weak [editline]B====D[/editline]
Then what is the point of cave wheat and other crops?
Dwarves grow tired of the same type of beer, you can mix it up for a happier dwarf, but only do that when you have a comfortable existence [editline]I once tried to eat a picture of Nicolas Cage to gain his power[/editline] Also, I'm loving all this activity, it makes me feel all warm inside
I was mortally wounded and the boss who had murdered my pal was getting away. If I wanted to get him, I would have to act quick.
In one last desperate attempt to kill him, I tossed the only thing I had left at the boss. The Sasquatch tongue. [sp]It missed and I died[/sp] RIP
Out of curiosity, how long did it take for you guys to learn how to play/get the hang of this game?
Out of curiosity, how long did it take for you guys to learn how to play/get the hang of this game?
It took me 1-2 months of tinkering with the game, and referring to the Quickstart guide before I felt competent with the game
Fuck it I am going to try to get back into this game again but I am probably going fail miserably. [editline]4th July 2013[/editline]
It took me 1-2 months of tinkering with the game, and referring to the Quickstart guide before I felt competent with the game
Man that is not encouraging.

[editline]4th July 2013[/editline] Man that is not encouraging.
That's until I felt I could do it without any outside help I was having fun with the game after a few days
Huh, I read a tutorial on how to do the basic things (designating, setting tasks, building, squads, etc) and now I'm figuring out the rest on my own. I feel "competent" in the basics of the game, and embracing knowledge every now and then. Took me one day.
I'm actually perfectly ok with it being a month or two and since I've got nothing to do this month, I got plenty of time :v:
You'll be able to play after a day or two, it just took me personally a month before I felt I was "Good" at the game
i guess i'll give this game a try. i was always curious about this game. [editline]3rd July 2013[/editline] looks fun as hell, too.
You have no idea how true that last phrase is No idea
I usually build my forts at the side of a mountain, near a volcano. I build like a huge quarry, with a bridge crossing over, leading into my fort, with fortifications 1-2 z levels above, where my marksdwarves are chilling. Either way, I did what any sensible person would do, fill the quarry with lava from the volcano. It just so happened to have grown some mushy grassy thingies down there, and when the lava hit, it sent some poisonous fumes up to the bridge, where some of my dwarves were walking. Needless to say, my dwarves started throwing up everywhere.. EVERYWHERE. Some of them had a tantrum, and started beating each other, which drove other dwarves to madness. Then they all started beating, and eating each other, while throwing up all over the place :v: [t]http://i.imgur.com/p7vjQTJ.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/nXLzgJY.png[/t]
I really want to play adventure mode but I don't understand! :v: I know how to fight and shit, but I don't see the goal.
