At the moment I'm building a water system that brings water to my wells and allows contaminated water to drain off the map, but I'm wondering if there's any traps I could place to stop swimming animals/goblins from getting through the system. Is it possible to place an upright spike/spear a tile below the current and have the people drop onto it and hopefully get impaled or start drowning?

I think you can just use a grate or bars as a filter. Water will still flow through, but anything swimming won't make it through.
They can swim through it if its a full 7/7 tile.

Sometimes forgotten beasts can take over civilizations and rule them for hundreds of years, and then they visit your fortress as diplomats. Those poisonous vapours are nasty shit, don't let him in your fort as he might release them and cause a plague.
Too late. He's sitting in my booze stockpile. OHSHITOHSHITOHSHITOHSHIT.
@EDIT: He likes to watch my mayor when he sleeps. I can only imagine mayors face when he wakes up.

Devlog:
[QUOTE]Hill dwarves are up and running with their little gardens and the other tidbits that needed doing. This also means that human plots in villages have gardens as well now, finally, instead of that furrowed waste that has surrounded them forever. Now for a protracted stay underground with our thoroughly cave-adapted buddies in the deep mountain halls without direct exits up outside. They have little living areas set up already, but I want to differentiate them a bit from the fort layouts, and of course there's the main feature of underground travel to do.[/QUOTE]
So I finally got on my lazy ass and got this again. Decided to shake things up and play adventure mode.
Dwarf, awesome fighter, basic stuff.
Well the human town I started in was literally abandoned. There wasn't a single human here. Found some kobolds in the castle, easily dispatched them, and lots of jewels... although it looks like this is a post-apocalyptic world so far despite this town "functioning" well enough to let me spawn.
So I adventured out some and "you have found a lair"
Aww cool a lair is this like a big ole cave or somet-

A little girl... in a cave... Long hair... emerald eyes... and she's trying to kill me.
[I]Dwarf Fortress[/I]
[editline]20th July 2013[/editline]
Oh and her icon is flashing, she's legendary in something.
[editline]20th July 2013[/editline]
I don't even want to kill her, but she's literally lunging at me with [I]nothing[/I] and is trying to kill me!
[editline]20th July 2013[/editline]
I broke her arm and kicked her in the stomach and now she's laying on the ground and puking everywhere. Can I save her at all or befriend her or something?
[editline]20th July 2013[/editline]
Well she suffocated, after yelling out the above 3 more times and missing while I sat on the ground in front of her and dodged without trying.

The last legendary creature I encountered in dwarf fortress was a sea serpent, however it appeared on dry land so I stopped and threw rocks at it while I watched it air drown.
And then I got [I]slaughtered[/I] by a zombie hoard. A human butcher decided to become a necro and pal around the other necro and next thing I know I've been swarmed.
Lets go again!
Before you start a new one, think you could get at her legends page? I'm curious if she was a werebeast or something and you just got her at a good time.
I am a human necromancer, I have an army of 103 zombie peasants and I stormed some human town.
It's like I lead the way, walk towards some random door, peek in and exit immediately. I can only imagine what goes through the inhabitants head - A bloody human missing a hand peeks in, goes back out instantly and merely seconds later their house is filled with zombies.
My undead party was ambushed by a goblin army.

[editline]Now[/editline]
Yep, it's a massacre.
[editline]Now[/editline]
Animating every bodypart and corpse I can. Combat logs are ca 10 pages per turn.

[editline]Now[/editline]
So many goblins.

[editline]Now[/editline]
I think I can safely say I'm unstoppable. 200 minions alive. Not visible in the picture - they are hunting down fleeing goblins.

After looking up her legends entry... I find that she was four years old.
Born in 1046, she was later bit and became a were panda at less than a year old.
In 1047, she fled the city and began living in a pathetic cave in The Bridled Hill.
1048 was uneventful, she became an enemy of a couple of towns.
1049 was a bit more eventful, lots of devouring of small animals. Lots of attacking things and people and failing.
eight confirmed kills, all animals, all taken from the nearby town of Sweetnessgriffons.
Her cave was called Figuresewers the Nights of Dimpling
That's a kinda sad story, I mean all her confirmed kills were animals.
Still impressive for a four year old.
Impressive, but I mean
She didn't really do anything wrong, she was just misunderstood
Dragon visited me today. Magnificent, huge, very old dragon that breaths fire. It died from 4 copper blots. Not much fun. Good thing that I managed to open [url=http://puu.sh/3GCzk.png]hell gates[/url]. Now I have a lot of fun.

(I got 292 dwarfs)
How do you make an adventurer who's a necromancer? Is there a new update, or have you got to do something in game?
You have to find a book with the secrets of life and death in game and read it
[editline]20th July 2013[/editline]
easiest way is to find a necro kill him and read his book
i want to learn to play this but its just i really cant be bothered watching the hours of tutorials

Read the wiki whilst playing, that's how I learned it and it didn't really feel all that tedious apart from the very beginning until I figured out that you can't dig directly into the ground. I spent about 2 hours trying to mine straight down rather than into a mountain.

Except you KINDA can dig into the ground, you just have to make a ditch first.
Not even a ditch, you can just designate a down stair.
well ive got a world set up from the tutorial i was watching but even though i placed it next to a road and a river they never showed up, and thats when i stopped playing

I meant as in mine, shit sucked when I noticed how completely retarded I'd been.

Who never showed up? If you mean your dwarfs if you entered Dwarf fortress mode they're automatically there after you've set up your embark. Try pressing F1 if you can't find them.
no, the roads and the river just didnt show even though i placed my fort on the local mode right next to it
[QUOTE=Mike Tyson;41536708]no, the roads and the river just didnt show even though i placed my fort on the local mode right next to it[/QUOTE]
It's possible that the river could be underground.
This is pretty cool.
