it did show on the map, unless df has a different way of showing a map which it could for all i know
Was the actual embark square on the river?
This is pretty cool.

He won. He's the only person to have ever won dwarf fortress.

The different coloured squares in the leftmost box is the area are where you embark, make sure that they are over the river and road, I think you can move it with umkh, and resize it with shift+ umkh.

Pfft. He might have an awesome girlfriend, but does he own 249 excited dwarfs?

This would be your issue. The selected area is the bounds of your map and the rivers aren't wide enough to take up the entire space so just put it over the river.
I wouldn't worry about the road, caravans can still get to you regardless, but a river is very valuable to have.
Not even a ditch, you can just designate a down stair.
That's true, but it's easier to defend a ditch. You can pretty easily turn the only entrance into a lava lake if you prepare, rather than piping a stream of lava over the door.

"creature occupying site"
FFFFFFFFFF-
Honestly, there are times where I'm certain that the dwarves think the goddamn designation is "occupying the site" :v:.
It's their own fat asses getting in the way.
So I just started playing this game and my first wave of migrants was over 60 dwarves so they all starved to death/killed each other because i had no idea what to do.
Think Toady would put a limit on how many immigrants come in each wave to something more reasonable, or is that part of the FUN?
Like even put a variable in d_init alongside the pop cap, it's not that hard.

The first two are limited to only a handful or so, but every migrant wave after the end of your first year is only limited by your fort's attractiveness. The first wave of the second year will also have all of the extra dwarves the first two waves would have had, so it's very possible to get ridiculous numbers of dwarves quickly.

i did definitely do that, i guess i just fucked up somewhere
I always get too many dwarves in my first 3 waves.
Man, I just got back into DF and I forgot how unforgiving it is. I mean, I had a demigod swordsman and a bunch of followers, we're fighting some bandits or whatever, there's one left, crawling around with two broken legs, I go to finish him off. He caved my head in with a single blow.
This was after dragging himself across the floor, while my mooks slapped multiple shits out of him.
Credit where it's due, that guy...holy shit.

Without Orkel's fix skulls have the strength and consistency of those thin candy shells you get on M&Ms.
I promised myself I wouldn't play DF again until the new update, but the temptation is just too much...

That is amazing
Light sources is one of those things that are oddly missing in DF.

Uhh, I'm not so sure about this.
Found him in a local town, gathered up some friends and confronted him. The only damage he did was slicing open my Swordsmans' leg.

Dwarf Fortress does a pretty good job of reminding you that no matter how completely badass you are, if you fuck around some peasant with a sword can still cut your head off.

And that no matter how many kills someone has, they are a pathetic useless weakling when faced with something other than worldgen

Or a zombie with a boning knife can stab you through your candy helmet
I've killed around 40 night creatures in Genesis, only to get my legs bitten off by a horseshoe crab and thrown into the sea. I fucking love this game.
I decided I want to play DF again and apperently I still had some savefile, and I instantly realized what made me quit last time: migrants and organizing all of them :v:

surprisingly enough the lowest happiness in the fortress is "fine". I'm not going to continue the fort though as I do not know what I was doing except for having food issues because all these dwarves.
Just defended my first siege, after around 10 hours of building my mighty fortress, a unit of 12 lashers appear. I thought, No problem I'll just close my gates and prepare my military then out of no-where a winged frost titan who could spit fire also showed up and THEN I found out I had forgot to link the gate to the lever.
So in complete fear I sent all my dwarfs down to the hospital where there were some flood gates left over from my experiments with water and shut them away in there and prepared to hold out against the wrath of armok with my dogs and squad ready infront of the gates. Then after the titan had grabbed a few puppies and then set fire to them whilst pulling their tongues off the lashers turned on him and wrecked the shit out of him but not before the titan set fire to the entire lower half of the top layer and the entire mountain side in the north.
Now I was confident and sent my military up to try and protect my engineer as he built the link up between the gate and lever but the goblins came at them and 6 out of the remaining 10 were caught in cage traps and the rest promptly cleaned up by my crew with only one casualty.
Now I'm figuring out how to deal with the remaining goblins, thinking of putting them into empty pond during summer with grates on the top and letting my marksdorfs deal with them.
Has this been posted yet?

You should put them in there and then grate it over, and just wait for rainfall
that'd be fun
