Just out of curiosity do I need to abandon my fort to start up an adventure mode or Legends mode? I can't find it on the main menu
If you want to play in the same world without abandoning your fort, copy your Dwarf Fortress folder and abandon it in the copy.

I don't know why I didn't think of that, thanks!
Why copy the entire folder? Just copy and rename the world folder in the save folder.
My biggest problem with DF is I've never been able to figure out the whole military side of the game. Every once in a while I'll start up a game and do pretty well just running the fortress but when it comes to combat and training I have no fucking clue what to do. Or rather, I don't know what I'm doing wrong, because I've followed tutorials but my dwarfs always get their asses kicked.
If you don't cheat (danger rooms) its pretty difficult to train up your military. It takes forever through regular training, especially if you don't have a dwarf with high teaching (almost never get those).
Its best to recruit dwarves with military skills rather than civvies and train them on slaughtering all the wild life.
when making armor, are boots and gloves made in pairs or do you need to make 4 seperate orders for 2 boots and for 2 gloves?

The latter I'm sure, hence the singular name
In pairs, though artifacts are singular.
I used to always make them in 2s until I realized I was swimming in them.
Thanks for the info! sure will help my fortress.
This so far has probably been my most advanced fortress (even though I never got a working military or siege yet) with 60 dwarves of which half are happy and higher and the rest is content. I'm now finishing up the needs for my hospital and starting to churn up steel production.
Things that should come in pairs come in pairs.
I've never built a danger room- though I want to next playthrough- Instead I generally rely on marksdwarves who can be recruited from the usual VAST surpluses of hunters.
Why didn't Toady just name them boots and gauntlets then. Gosh!

Pretty much. I keep a melee squad around, - mostly for emergencies - but marksdwarves is pretty much all I used.
Is it best to have a varied army with weapons of each kind, or does it suffice just having swordsman for the cutting and hammerdwarves for the pummeling?
I consider danger rooms cheating, personally. It's a lot more fun to me if your Fortress Guard is made up entirely of warriors proven in battle.
do you need to have a proper room for your militia commander (squad leader of the first squad you make) before he'll get his squad to follow the schedule orders and train properly?

As long as you have a barracks that's assigned to a squad as well as training they should train.

For efficiency, in theory it's good to have one squad for each damage type. That's a complete bitch though, and I just let them use whatever they want.
does the month have to switch once before the squad will go and fullfill orders? Right now they are just standing around in the barracks doing induvidual combat drills, but I believe that's just their equivalent of having no job (and the month I'm in right now is set to train)
Thanks for the help though, stuff like this is always nice to know.
I have no military... I really should fix that.

I was busy setting it up and right when my dwarves took their armor from the stockpiles my first ever siege happened :v:, 2 dwarves got killed but coincidentally my dad turned off power without asking me so I lost that "progress", and I had a save from before I had even set up my military, so that was quite convenient.
EDIT: the exact same thing happened after playing for a while again: Elven caravan appears at the exact same time as a siege. This time my military was even less prepared BUT I linked up my drawbridge this time so I was safe. I had to get rid of the stupid goblins though so I opened it up again to get them to my traps, and they ran straight into them and got hurt badly. Another funny thing was that I had all my stray animals pastured inside the fort, so a bunch of dogs attacked a goblin or 2 which scared away the rest of the attackers. No casualties or anything except for a kitten the goblins hated for some reason.
Also, my dwarves started now are actual soldiers and are all preparing for a training session together. I love it when this stuff actually works.
I've had seven births in the past 10 minutes.

I'm also making a badass archer/noble tower at the front of my fortress

I have 327 fucking coke and 100 charcoal... Well at least this map I won't be short on fuel....

Time to test my hall of retard dodgers (Weapons traps in the middle of two retracting drawbridges)

Well seven or so goblins fell around 6 Z levels from dodging away from silver spiked balls.

You can't make this shit up.
I have no idea who this dwarf is as he isn't one of my citizens, and neither is he dead, so some dwarf from ages past with an affinity for ducks has just been immortalised next to the grave of my best warrior.
I got a dwarf with like 250 kills on her name, and is about 150 years old (which is old, but not impossible). Could I be having a vampire in my fort?

Maybe it's a metaphor for your warrior.
Always tauntin' the air and embracing all that was fowl.
Quick question: I've started a fledgling military and I want my squad to be equipped with spears. One of the Dwarves seems to have acquired a copper war hammer and seems to be refusing to look at his shiny new spear. How do I get him to drop the hammer?
Force it in his unifrom (instead of "any melee", choose the specific spear.)
If you get a message saying he is attached to the hammer, then you won't be able to make him leave his weapon, the weapon essentially becomes his waifu. Hell, they sometimes name them after becoming attached to them iirc.

You'd be surprised. I've gone through more in less than a year.
