Hm, so if I just line up some cave traps and spike traps in a spiral of walls surrounding a kitten or something, if Goblins (say a siege or an ambush) rush through there to kill it because my gate will be closed and it'd be the only killable thing in reach, they would trigger all the traps, yeah? Getting caught in cages, spikes through the groin, etc.
If you want to trap your entrance, one of the best ways I've figured out how to do it is to have a one or two tile entrance as your main entrance completely filled with traps, and then a super winding path for caravans 4 or 5 wide with traps lining the walls. Make sure there's a path of 3 or else the caravans can't get through.

I usually just make a drawbridge and put it down when the caravan is arriving/leaving.
A bridge will only get you so far. A combination of bridges, walls/fortifications, and traps is the best bet. Toss in an archer tower you keep manned year-round and some disposable war dogs outside for distraction/spotting sneakers and you're good to go. Nothing short of pilot error or the caverns will let anything in.

Okay, this HAS to be a vampire.
[editline]2nd September 2013[/editline]
Yep, just checked DFHack, there is a cursed creature in the fortress. OFF TO THE CAVERNS FOR REAL THIS TIME.
Not necessarily. I've had legitimate dwarves with that much shit on their history page.

Doesn't matter now. She has no friends or relatives in the fortress, and has no useful skills, so I sent her down anyways.
She has beaten to death two giant olms, a giant toad, and a few Bat people to death with an iron whip that I bought. I didn't expect her to take THAT weapon, but thats what she took. Oh well, she's tearing shit up with it.

It can't access my fortress because I haven't breached the second cavern fully, but now I know its down there.
What should I do?
[editline]3rd September 2013[/editline]
Oh god I have breached that cavern I forgot. They can't destroy bridges can they? Please tell me they can't. Plleeeeeease.
[editline]3rd September 2013[/editline]
No. That doesn't matter because it got into the first cavern layer. I didn't know they were connected.
Well, my vampire is toast.
[editline]3rd September 2013[/editline]
Huh. It just ran up, destroyed my doors, and ran off. He didn't see the vampire just around the corner, I guess.
Aww man, was having some fun, letting shit really hit the fan and randomly flooding my base when all of a sudden...Spring has arrived and it autosaved.
Agree to do a sucession, disagree if not.
I best Guild Wars dorf.
The vampire destroyed it and took no injures.

To honor the vampire, I gave her the job title "Slayer of the Forgotten," even though she's basically killed everything that can even spawn in the caves so far, other than Giant Cave Spiders. Trolls, Crocs, forgotten beasts, dozens of trogs, etc.
But THEN, less than a minute later, another forgotten beast showed up.

It didn't last long.

Wait, how do you lodge something's skull through its brain?
Wait, how do you lodge something's skull through its brain?
By forcefully replacing what was once brain with skull fragments
Wait, how do you lodge something's skull through its brain?
By having the paper skulls present in vanilla DF.
I was expect the snarky response "with a whip" but I'll take it.

There's a new Future of the Fortress post up. Worldgen forts won't be reclaimable yet, but there's a new quest interface for adventurers and pretty soon our forts will be joined to others by roads.
So I've been working on an interesting fortress lately. Interesting things to note; I have almost zero useful metal[1], my army of 9 dwarves have only been dispatched 3 times all of which were to kill berserk children, the captain of the guard lost the ability to use both of his arms during a mishap with a panda (he was actually winning until I canceled the kill order to prevent him from sustaining any injuries D:) but I think thats fine, he seems to still be training something.
I decided to dig a tunnel from the river to a location where I can allow it to fall many z levels to facilitate the production of my underground tree farm when I realized it was generating a lot of mist which was going to waste. I considered moving my meeting area to where the shaft was but that would ruin the planning I went through to keep the meeting hall in a very efficient location. I decided it would make a lot more sense to just make a statue garden which I can cancel when I need to get work done.

Things are working extremely well! Most of my population has forgotten about all of the children that have been murdered! Now if only I could move the soldiers sparring sessions closer... They seem to be the only unhappy dorfs in my fortress at the moment. Well... besides the naked children who are trying to find rags to wear. I guess as long as their death doesn't upset their parents everything should be fine.
[1] Actually I did find a single vein of gold ore, so I have a shitton of that lying around I'm using to make gold statues/doors/tables/thrones. I'm probably going to make gold cabinets to replace with the stone ones when certain useful dwarfs inevitably start having meltdowns.
I'm not sure if this is the place for DF questions but what the heck.
I have one of my best forts yet set up right now. I actually built farms BEFORE they ran out of food this time!
However I have two issues... First off my farmer is not planting. He planted one round of crops and that was it. I'm down to 5 plant food. But 200? total. There must have been some prepared meals on the wagon or some thing.
So any idea why he's not planting?
Also I have 20? drink but dwarfs are still running to the river for water? right past the undead bison... :suicide:

did you set a crop for all four seasons?
[editline]7th September 2013[/editline]
also of course this is a place for questions
Yep I set the plump helmets for all 4 seasons. The one time planting happened only half the 7x3 field was filled up, but after they were harvested nothing new was planted.
The game says I have 200? seeds but I'm not sure how to check what types of sees they are. Plump Helmets fall into the Plant food category right?

I believe in your stocks menu you can manually look at the amount of food you have, which will also show you all different types and the possible amount of each.
i'unno, I might be wrong. Haven't played in a few days and I have a shoddy memory.
[editline]8th September 2013[/editline]
Also, he may be out of seeds. If your dwarves are not eating or brewing the plump helmets, you won't get any more seeds from them. Once they eat them, I believe you'll get 1-4 seeds.
Ok it's definitely possible that there out of seeds.
Whats interesting is that the Z screen shows 5 plants but stocks show 20?.
I have too many seeds to see what I have with out a broker. I just got a migrant wave to I'm going to set one up.
My main worry is ruining out of food. the Z screen shows 200? food but I'm not sure what food it's talking about......
And the issues of dwarfs ruing to the river. It won't belong before they attract the attention the unread bison and !!fun!! occurs :quagmire:
It's pretty weird how dwarfs keep taking the entire flipping sack of 100+ plump helmet spawns and then having the rest of the farmers bitch about how there are no plump helmet spawns.
I guess the "#?" numbers are approximations, depending on how many dwarfs you have, 200 food seems ok. As long as you uphold the cycle of agriculture, cooking and brewing you should be fine.
