Secret project, codename: Biological shield has experienced a problem, limbs too easily detached, and user too attached to it.
Suggestions: Remove empathy from user, modify biological shield to be made of steel.
Nah, the shield is fine, dwarven babies can withstand almost anything, except shaking.
Don't shake the baby folks, it's bad.
I've started gender segregating my fortress just for that reason. Keep the men in menial tasks so they don't develop valuable skills that'll die when I have to draft them, and keep the women in specialist roles that benefit from high skills. Good thing you can't lose a baby by dropping them into a forge.
It's far easier to narrow down migrants if you can arbitrarily figure out how many will go into the harvesting/hauling/construction pool and the dwarves don't seem to mind too much.
Just build a Sexnasium between the two halves. Lot's of high quality beds and statues and engravings of dwarves to get people in the mood.

Will all the decor be phallic in nature? If so, please continue.
That's actually one thing that I think is strangely missing from the game. One of the most outstanding elements of all civilization and culture is the presence of fertility and reproductive statues, sculptures, poems, charms, etc. Yet Dwarves seem thoroughly more interested in cheese, pine-trees, and tentacle demons then each other.

Basically just this with a beard and menacing spikes of coal or something.

They're dwarves not Romans.
my fort is borderline on tantrum spiral
a giant cave spider and crocodile teamed up and killed a shitton of dwarves and the spear trap I have set up in my entrance hallway to train dorf dodging keeps killing babies and children
[editline]13th September 2013[/editline]
can't keep up with coffin production, no tantrums yet though
[editline]13th September 2013[/editline]
also children can also get strange moods apparently
literally biting a vamp in the neck and drinking blood from the source.
Well there's your problem. You're being a reverse vampire.
My orc fortress is going okay... trying to do it above ground, for the most part. I'm keeping stockpiles and housing underground (because fuck making all of those bastards houses), and I assume elves will show up once I head into the second year. I've got a tiny military, trying to expand it.
Also, I wish they built walls faster. I have all of my orcs set to be architects, but half the time they just ignore the order and sit around complaining about chairs and how their favorite kitten was 'accidentally' crushed underneath a bridge.
Walls are constructed by the crafters, not architects. Masons build stone walls, carpenters build wooden walls, metalcrafters built metal walls.
Toady posted a big devlog:
Finished up some hundreds of new personality sentences. There are also values, which mostly come from the culture, and dreams, which mostly grow out of those. So dwarven society, of course, highly values craftsdwarfship and many dwarves have a dream of creating a masterwork or mastering a skill. Each dwarf also has a few values that differ from the cultural norms in general, which'll lead to different dreams and behaviors (these are printed in a different color so you can easily find what's special about a given dwarf). As usual, the system isn't used everywhere it could be, since it is a large project, but I'm finding myself much more enthusiastic about the new personality facets and values vs. the old system which was a bit wishy-washy, and this first release will use them at least as much as before, with some new stuff. The value system (combined with the old ethics) also makes it pretty clear to me now that philosophies/religions are going to be able to be generated and impact play immediately once that rolls around (not for this release).
On the other hand, the paragraph writeups do criticize dwarves a bit harshly at times (since it highlights the extremes and doesn't mention the average personality facets at all), and they can be fundamentally worse people than before. The presentation can be a little overblown, since some good/useful things about dwarves (like high skills) do not appear on the personality page, so it might be good to give them a chance before you rush to the drawbridge or magma lever.
I'm glad to see the personalities get more love.

You ask the impossible.
Walls are constructed by the crafters, not architects. Masons build stone walls, carpenters build wooden walls, metalcrafters built metal walls.
Oh wow, thank you very much. I had no idea.
Actually I'm not 100% on the metal walls, I don't build many of those. But I know masons build stone and carpenters build wood.
So my miners were digging and they had a cave in and when I check them for injuries I find on one of my miners. should I panic? He's doing fine so far
do you have any brain injuries along with the rest of that lot? If so, you may want to panic. I would recommend that he ends up in hospital though.

So I finally got a semi successful fortress and I'm training a military.
However they have been going at it for a while now so how do I make sure that they are sparing?

You should get reports of how they're lightly tapping one another.
Be wary that wrestlers may throw each other around and into each other, which may cause injuries.
I might take a turn
School starts for me in like 4 days though
Oh thy young ones, and i have genetics in uni and live in a apartment with several other people, so i can't really enjoy the glory of boatmurder anymore.

Oh ok... crap. Time to consult the wiki and see what's wrong!

Didn't know migrants could come in damaged.

And Degel Laudedlenses was the son of a necromancer, so he must have just been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

place an armor stand and designate it a room, they train in there
That went well, the only casualty was the baby that my 1 female soldier had been carrying.
[t]http://puu.sh/4rw7A.jpg[/t]
baby carrying behavior needs to be adjusted
one baby deflected a spear in my danger room with its tongue
baby carrying behavior needs to be adjusted

I agree, they don't carry them often enough.
[editline]14th September 2013[/editline]
Seriously, one of my female soldiers was carrying a baby for a long time, she survived 3 sieges in direct combat. Then the baby grew up and she died in the next ambush.

My dwarves only make lame artifacts.
