Gunna try my hand at a haunted biome.
Be back in five minutes with news of my failure.
[editline]29th September 2013[/editline]
I embarked with four swords, battle picks, a war axe, etc. and some training for each of my dwarves.
The second I embarked a bunch of blood nyad things started beating up badgers, and I just threw all my dwarves at them. First threat eliminated with no injures.
Also, there are like four giant drowspiders just sitting on top of a cave that is jutting out of the ground that I just noticed.
Got some eyeball grass?
No haunted / terrifying embark is complete without!
And the giant drowspiders attacked. About four of them. They killed my iron-clad war dogs, and my pack animals, but I managed to kill 'em off. There is still one on the map.

Other than the local wildlife, everything is pretty normal. No evil grass.
[editline]29th September 2013[/editline]
Oh god they just keep coming
[IMG]http://i40.tinypic.com/fkv9ub.png[/IMG]
Oh god and evil cloud is moving towards all of my dwarves so fast gotta go fast!
[editline]29th September 2013[/editline]
I tried to get them into the cave fast but two or three of them just decided "NOPE" and ran straight into the cloud and immediately became zombies.
I now have three armed zombies, and about four zombie boulder crabs.
[editline]29th September 2013[/editline]
Only one guy is still alive, running around handless, while the drowspiders duke it out with the zombies.
[editline]29th September 2013[/editline]
He charged back in, took down one zombie, and was struck down by the other four.
That was fast.

I honestly thought that said GIANT ROWSDOWER (redundant) and had to double-take. I don't think I've ever had to deal with them before.
I'm actually getting bored of my current fortress, I realized after like 5 in game years that my fortress had no enemies, and there were no goblins or elves on the map I'm playing. Kind of sad really, the fortress had so much going for it. I successfully implemented some things very efficiently. I had a well equipped army of like 10 soldiers who have been training for years but nothing to kill...
Welp looks like I might have to conquer the underground.

You've inspired me to embark on a terrifying glacier, wish me luck for by god I'm gonna need it.
[QUOTE=Lijitsu;42347354]I think the reason is because there's pretty much nothing to fight about. There's so many ways to do everything, and none of them are wrong. DF is like some kind of anomaly in that it's hard to pick an actual fight with someone about something that has to do with it.[/QUOTE]
"wow fggt did u really just say they should buff cheese? its already op as a fuck why wood toady need maek it stronger?"
I think I'm going to gen a world with no monsters except for titans, raise the titan cap to the max, lower titan attack requirements, and then select a huge embark location on a flat plain and attempt to build an 'Attack on Titan'-esque city with districts for the different classes of dorfs. Maybe have catapults on the walls and only let my troops use swords.
Potential show spoilers:
[sp]Bonus points if I can trap some titans within the walls during the construction[/sp]

Mod the titans stats so they've got massive body heat. And name all of your soldiers after characters.

But no dorf can match Levi for cleanliness.
How can we fix this?

"If one dwarf can't do it, send two!"
My terrifying glacier fortress "Facepunch of Games" quickly succumbed to a lone Blizzardman who my Hammerdwarf didn't even make a scratch on.
Hammers are for maiming, not killing. The only way they kill anything is if they hit the head, but in vanilla DF you can crack people's brains with socks if you wanted to. With masterwork DF for example, which includes my brain fix mod in it, hammers basically immobilize enemies by breaking their bones while your swordsdwarves finish them off with stabbed lungs and chopped limbs. Hammers should always be paired with swords.
Unless you play vanilla DF in which they can kill dragons with a tiny scratch on their skull.
Lightsabre whips are the best weapons, imagine a slade one...
[QUOTE=Terminutter;42355645]Lightsabre whips are the best weapons, imagine a slade one...[/QUOTE]
Vanilla whips are basically supersonic, tiny hammers. Which is why they ignore all types of armour and rip people to shreds.
I modded them to be more realistic but it's outdated atm, will update mod once new version comes (as i've said before)
It turns out that making large perfect circles out of blocks is a lot harder than it seems. Spent the better part of an hour trying to learn pixel art and the algorithm behind block placement before stumbling across this nifty conics program someone made with minecraft in mind.

The first ring of my AoT city (marked out with zones) is going to have a radius of about 51 units with the other rings at 101 and 151 units. It'll take an inordinate amount of stone then again so do most megaprojects.
There are currently 1000 titans in the gameworld which can choose to attack when the dorf cap hits 50, in addition to the numerous creatures lurking about the savage, evil wasteland. The first expedition hit a minor setback when all 7 dwarfs were effortlessly slaughtered by a passing 'Goblin man' who then decided to scatter every item across the massive 8x8 embark location. The second expedition to reclaim the wastes has so far been successful in that we have built the walls and doors for the site which marks the future home of our glorious king. Goblin man quickly fled after receiving a bone-shattering strike to the arm via a pickaxe.

The colors on the map make it hard to see but there is in fact a ring marked out between those red endpoints for future build sites of the innermost wall. The center structure is the future palace and is currently a temporary safehouse for our intrepid survivors.
[B][U]Edit:[/U][/B]
Second expedition managed to get some basic amenities set up and all was well until a farmworker decided to take a walk through one of the many migrating 'Large Black Clouds of Pure Evil' and he turned on his brothers and slew them all despite their best efforts. The Third Expedition into the wastes shall bring along some military units this time to protect the kingdom's best interests in these harsh times.

The new personality system really does make for more interesting characters. One of the examples was a dwarf who doesn't think craftsdwarfship is worth anything.
Is there a bug where livestock will never be less hungry from eating or something?
I had 4 goats grazing on a 20x20 area of dry grass yet even though they ate literally all the time, they eventually died of starvation. Now I got some new animals from immigration and it's starting to happen again. Has anyone heard of this?
[editline]30th September 2013[/editline]
Also a dog just attacked a dwarf at random. Have all my animals gone crazy?
So I had dug out a small pit to throw boulders into to tidy up. I marked a bunch of boulders for dumping and suddenly I am getting all these messages about cancelled jobs due to unconsciousness.
Apparently there was a legendary miner still down there and dozens of dwarves were throwing boulders on top of him. He died.
Good job, guys. A++ for effort.

It matters not if the hole is empty or the hole is filled, be it with materials or bodies, if the fuhrer demands things be placed in the hole, placed in the hole they shall be. Thus is the way of dwarf.
Unless they see an angry rhesus macaque. Then they shall flee in abject terror into the wilderness.

I actually think it's a bug, that some animals can't eat fast enough, so they starve to death.

Third Expedition began with the arrival of the team with a miner substituted by a dwarf wielding two iron short swords. Seconds after arriving the former farmworker, still possessed with evil spirits, sprinted out of the wastes and killed the new carpenter before our brave new militia captain swiftly struck him down with a flurry of blows. This apparently upset the other dwarves declaring their former guardian as 'Berserk' (presumably a result from inhaling what was left of the black cloud from the farmer) and fleeing from him at a breakneck pace.
The mason fled from him straight into yet another black cloud - he was then torn apart by Swordnut.
The pair of miners fled from him to the east, right into the comforting arms of a pack of dragon-raptors.
Swordnut was then lured into a cave by a brave dwarf and sealed inside forever more by a very lucky miner.
With only two dwarfs left, a miner and a farmer, both locked themselves inside the walls of the keep and began the long task of engraving slabs, making a dining room, and trying not to go insane from misery. The farmer was relegated carpenter duties while the miner became the new mason. Both seemed at their ropes end until they made each other a matching pair of shoddy wooden chests and crudely carved rock cabinets.

Shame about the kobolds. Oh well! 10% for a pick isn't so bad. Above ground fortresses are super dangerous though, and kobolds aren't exactly the best fighters.
[editline]2nd October 2013[/editline]
Alright, gearing up for a decent scale project to keep myself entertained. Gunna embark in a savage biome, and build a temple to Armok. I will try to include ten adamantine statues, massive bridges acting as gates made of gold, a moat (preferably of magma, though may not be possible), and an extensive catacombs. I will also attempt to build some stuff down in the caverns as well. Since this is Masterwork Dwarf Fortress, I can also include actually Armok shrines and such.
Embarking on a plot of green normal forests, with a mountain between that and the savage terrifying forests on the other side. We shall cleanse these lands in the name of the emperor! For the dwarvperium!
[QUOTE=IAmAnooB;42361875]I actually think it's a bug, that some animals can't eat fast enough, so they starve to death.[/QUOTE]
It's a confirmed, several month old bug with the [grazer] tag. Some animals, such as elephants are destined to die due to it. Nearly as annoying as the fish population being fished out in a week, but unlike the fish problem, it's easily fixed by removing / modifying each broken animals grazer tag.
Update on Titanfort:
The innermost wall has finally been completed after 2 years of ingame time and innumerable casualties.
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/OD3e54S.jpg[/img_thumb]
This wall shall be dubbed 'Wall Bot' after one of the two survivors of the Third Expedition who was recently struck down by a berserk dwarf. She and her friend had survived the harsh winter together, and lo, blissful waves upon waves of migrants flooded the once empty halls of the bunker-like fort. The population quickly shot up to 56 long before the wall was complete which was a concern as the Titans could invade at 50. Fortunately, in a way, the fort took heavy casualties after yet another evil cloud corrupted the newest military of titan-slayers who then turned upon each other and their former comrades. After the massacre and a rather unimpressive werewolf attack, the population had fallen by 20 into a safe zone yet again.
For now the plan is to begin harvesting wood for surface buildings to house the expanding population and to finish the bridges on all sides of Wall Bot. Currently the total area covered by the walls is but a third of the intended final area.
List of casualties so far:
Goblinman: 7
Evil Clouds: 13
Berserk Dwarfs: 23
Dragon Raptors: 2
Dehydration: 1
Titans: 0
oh god, embarking on the largest area possible is both beautiful and terrible. It's like having a 800 dwarf fort, with 7 dwarves.
Try setting 90% of it to restricted with the movement restriction. Set the inside to high traffic. Pathfinder should be slightly less laggy if you do so. Only issue is the tile cost for moving in the restricted area is something like 50, so they won't really go there unless forced.
The traffic setting can actually improve fort speeds fairly well if properly used, but it's a lot of effort.
