Birds work really well in both Masterwork and vanilla DF. If you play with grazers off, basic cheap animals like horses or donkeys aren't bad choices. In both games dogs/mastiffs are good for breeding, for both war training for defense and food when you start getting stupid amounts of them. In Masterwork cats are good choices because they shit out kittens like crazy and don't adopt. You need cats anyway in vanilla, but you have to be very careful about quickly caging the kittens so they don't adopt anyone. Personally I cage all baby and male animals anyway, because they aren't much use unless trained for war.

Though they breed about as fast, but in like litters of 10 each time. They swarm like fucking flies. I think I'm gunna try some dogs and bearded cavekeets or whatever they are called, because people say turkeys are really good and I assume these are MW's version of turkeys
Pretty sure turkeys are MW's version of turkeys. Unless you turn on all the condensing options. [editline]5th October 2013[/editline] Then again, I only played like one fortress on that last version of MW, most of my experience is from way early this year.
hahaha, what the christ If that bug about soldiers on the beach ever makes it into the next patch, it will make for some hilarity and !!fun. Looking forward to making a new fort.
It sounds like something I remember reading about Caligula doing (one of Romes worst emperors). He was leading his army to conquer new land like all the good emperors did, but stopped after a short distance and ordered all of his soldiers to start collecting seashells.

That should be something in DF. I want boats.
Speaking of boats I once tried making a functional U-Boat and I don't think I ever got around to post it. To this day I have no idea why I ever though this would work but here it is: [img_thumb]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5168131/before.PNG[/img_thumb] Then I disattached it from it's connection to the land: [img_thumb]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5168131/fuck.PNG[/img_thumb] Science! Edit: Sorry about the broken image

Just lost 3+ hours of work because I am an idiot who hates seasonal/yearly autosaves.

my fort so far. Up top, you have the dwarvern bedrooms. To the side you have kitchens, fisheries, and stills, (below it is food storage) and the dinning hall. It's still under construction. Then down lower, you have the work division, as well as the dwarvern storage. The dwarves are having fun trying to organize it. In the middle, is the stairwell, and a barracks, still under construction. My next tasks are to form a functional military, and hospital. my immediate goals right now is to secure my farming division, and start getting food production in a more 'stable' condition. Its a bunch of fun. [editline]6th October 2013[/editline] FUCKING SPOOKED MY SOCKS OFF, ILL TELL YOU WHAT
Just ran out of drink on my glacier fort, but I just got into the caverns and I have a completely cut off little section of it that has access to water, so I don't have to worry about hostiles except for aquatics. GO DRINK YOU BASTARDS.
Dwarves only drink alcohol, you better dig out some soil and start up a farm and brewery.
They prefer it, but they will drink water, you silly goose.
They don't like water but will drink it and be unhappy.

Could someone remind me what I should turn off to get a vanilla experience with masterwork?
So, [t]http://puu.sh/4JTfH.jpg[/t] lets see what comes of this [t]http://puu.sh/4JTjf.png[/t] Thats good I guess [t]http://puu.sh/4JTnP.png[/t] [t]http://puu.sh/4JTor.png[/t] Disappointment.
eh nvm, might as well use LNP
I would help you out mate, but I never played masterwork
Could someone remind me what I should turn off to get a vanilla experience with masterwork?
Why would you use Masterwork if you wanted vanilla?
I just finished my first game of df (masterwork btw) By "finished" I mean I had a farm growing plump helmets, a brewery, empty barrel storage next to the brewery, and the brewery kept saying no distillable objects. I also had an entire lake right outside the fortress marked as a water source, any they still all died of thirst. Well, most of them died of thirst, but the rest died from one of them turning out to be a warlock spy. Even if they wouldnt have died from thirst, they were dying of hunger. I had the forementioned farm, a fishery, a fish cleaner, and plant gatherers, but still dying of hunger. I hadnt built a kitchen yet. The dwarven caravan came along and I thought I was saved, but I couldnt figure out the trading UI. Gimme tips for my second try.
Go to your kitchen tab (Press z) and permit brewing for plump helmets. Then make sure you have enough to brew and eat. There is no such thing as too much food - only too few barrels. Try to have multiple farms going at once with a variety of distillable veggies (such as pig tails, cave wheat, rope reeds, etc) to keep your dorfs content with some variety. If you do somehow end up with too much food, make more booze or a few lavish meals. I normally avoid fishing as it generally puts dwarfs outside or in caverns where ambushes or nasty creatures can get them. It also requires fish cleaners for some which is just one more step needed for food production - plants are just easier. Also plants can still be farmed when all the water on the map is frozen solid.
What's the most efficient way to irrigate? Ponding? I feel like waterworks take sooo much effort and planning
Can I get some help with this
Can I get some help with this
Black squares indicate the level of a particular skill, diamonds are Legendary (I think). You can change it to numbers or bars in Options>Grid Options. Go to Options>Grid Colors to see what the colors mean. By default, the colors mean: You can toggle dwarf skills just by clicking on a square, then by clicking "Commit Changes" on the right, or "Commit Pending Changes" at the top.
The dwarven caravan came along and I thought I was saved, but I couldnt figure out the trading UI. Gimme tips for my second try.
At first you need to build a trade depot somewhere where the wagon can reach it like right out the front door, then you have to assign someone in the nobles screen to be your broker, preferably someone who has appraisal and judge of intent. Then when the caravan arrives, q the depot, request your broker and if you want to sell stuff you can have the other dwarves transport goods over to the depot (store stuff in bins, makes hauling a lot easier and you won't lose 10 minutes worth of hitting + and Enter due to the game crashing). The dwarven caravan is unique in a way because they make trade agreements with you. Essentially, you set the priority of what you need and they in turn tell you what they need. The next year they'll bring the stuff you wanted and you can sell them what they wanted for a higher price. [editline]now[/editline] Oh wait, tips. Uh, abuse the hell out of the dwarven trade agreements to get rich as fuck and buy seeds for agriculture whenever you can.
I got the trade depot and broker and everything, but when the screen came up for the trade itself, I couldnt figure out between the submenus and the priority slider thingies how to "GIBE FOOD PLS".
Oh. You just scroll with the arrow keys, IIRC, but for the priorities you gotta use + and - on the numpad. Or maybe the other way around. The actual trading doesn't happen until you q your depot and select trade.
