No, the UI isn't moddable. Get used to it :>
B-But Orkel. I want to play this game. ;_;
B-But Orkel. I want to play this game. ;_;
It doesn't take that long to learn, just run through the tutorial on the wiki and by the end of it you should be able to use it fine.
B-But Orkel. I want to play this game. ;_;
Then you're just gonna have to get used to it, it doesn't take too long to know your way around
B-But Orkel. I want to play this game. ;_;
Tough it out lady! Get used to the pain of a horribly unintuitive and messy abortion of a UI! (it gets better, but I'm sure Toady will revamp it some time this century)
B-But Orkel. I want to play this game. ;_;
Your best bet is to not play Dwarf Fortress then, to be honest. I'm not trying to sound mean at all, but DF sadly can't be without its awful UI. There are other games that are less robust, like Gnomoria, that apparently do a pretty okay job at mimicking a lot of the base gameplay. I've never played them though, so I can't say much about them.
Honestly I dont think the UI is that terrible. IMO either way its still better than the space station 13 UI. I had a good hold of the UI within a day of playing.
No honestly, it actually is pretty bad. It swaps used keys from menu to menu, allows arrow keys in some sections but then doesn't in others, etc.. You get used to it pretty quick because your brain goes "Holy FUCK I do not want to have to look this shit up again."
The main thing I would change, if it were possible, would be to allow you to place walls with a designation followed by material selection rather than just rows of 10. If there weren't enough materials for the entire wall then they would continue building until they ran out then informed the player of this.
Even as a veteran DF player the part of the UI that still annoy me is the stocks screen: It's so annoying to scroll down to find one type of item when there is no apparent pattern to the listing and a shit-ton of element per page.
After a while of playing you learn all the key combos for navigating stuff in seconds.
The stocks screen still confuses me. Just tons of random shit, some stuff shows up, some doesn't some numbers off to the side (I assume those are forbidden items on the listing) and some things you can view a more detailed version of, others not...
Here is my current 129 population fortress: [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/k3SW6TT.png[/img_thumb] This is just after the first goblin siege, note the goblin blood splattered on the wall.
The whole part of the UI is that it doesn't work so well for other keyboard types. So for example you need to press + to go up in a menu. Well for me to put + i need to press shift and 3 which moves the cursor and cancels the whole menu. So there is no way for me to go up and i have to use - to go trough the menus all the damn time. There's more though, like having to press ctrl+5 to go down a level and shift+5 to go up (or vice versa can't really remember). So yea it's even more annjoying for me to use the UI

I don't get how you're supposed to manage it, my fortresses always end up so ugly. (Then a necromancer showed up with the caravan and killed everyone out of the blue.)

You could start out with a very small self-sufficient outpost and start digging the fortress proper when you have more miners and mover everything there when it's done.

He threw the recruit at himself?
It's a troglodyte. They're not exactly intelligent creatures.
I think the best part of it is that slamming into the Cook will make you explode
wee this gun be fun Also, I need some help. I have these six (five now, I think, I may have managed to kill one) fucking goblins that are all fucking killing everything on the surface. I constructed my one entrance fort with a drawbridge, so that's all dandy. The problem is it is killing off all my caravans and migrant waves. I threw a buncho migrants at them, (made them military and sent them at the goblin fuckers) and the migrants managed to kill one (I THINK). I don't know what to do. I have no wood. I have no access to trade. My grazing animals are slowly dying off. Most o my dwarfs are bored out of their mind sitting in my dining hall, and the cheeky fuckers get to run around on the surface slaughtering and stealing from corpses. WAT DO

WAT DO
Build a secondary drawbridge, then open the first one and then slam the second one on top of them. Like: X = Wall 0 = Drawbridge XX000000XXX ....000000....0 ....000000....0 XXXXXXXXXX So that when you close the second one, it leaves the corridor clear, and when you open the first one, they'll naturally rush in. Where you can show them the power of dwarven atom smashing!
Use your drawbridge to fling that pesky filth right back to whence it came! Now, that should solve your little elf problem and the goblins should be easy.
Do what I do and continue mining and setting up your fortress until they leave. You don't need wood for anything except bins and beds, and both of those you can do without if you've already got a few beds for a dorm. Stone pots can substitute for barrels.

Well thats kinda neat Also, I think a caravan killed off the goblins. I don't know for sure though. Going to wait for a migrant wave to come and see if they get slaughtered.
Just check your unit list.
Now I remember why I just have so much trouble getting back into a fort before the new update comes out, I lost 2+ hours of work because in the middle of a migrant wave the game just suddenly crashed. Something like that completely just murders all motivation I have to continue playing.
[t]http://puu.sh/4NG6W.png[/t] So my dwarfs are doing dwarfy things. I now have access to the surface again. I have greatly expanded my military. I already got into another battle, this time with six or seven kobloid ambushers, lost two and three in the hospital. They ran away, as my halls were lined with blood. I seem to be having some issues with my military actually using their bows, however. How can I fix this?

I misread this as "honking the fortress," and thought you had a ghost haunting everyone by squeezing a clown horn.
