Hey could someone update me on what the dangers of shutting yourself inside your fort is? Like assuming you have underground farms and a well?
Your dwarves adapt and don't like the light.

Am I reading this right? The recruit jumped, then lost his clothes mid-flight before slamming into an obstacle.
[editline]15th October 2013[/editline]
rocked his socks off :v:
Nah, death reports are always preceded by them losing hold of whatever was attached to the body parts they don't have anymore.
In this case, it was all of them :v:

So if you lock yourself in good with self-sustainment workign you could practically go on and keep the fort alive forever?
that wouldnt be very fun
So the troglodyte managed to throw a recruit into himself so hard both him and the recruit were blown apart on the chef, whos entire body was broken? Thats metal
If what I think is true, the recruit jumped out of the way mid-flight and almost dodged the Troglodyte, but the Troglodyte jumped in the same path :v:.
Also, i'm actually going to try playing normal, I ended up playing some stupid stuff, as in modding raws so that I can get the feel of some of the more intricate stuff, and i'm gonna stream it all if I can tommorow for you guys.

Yes. I've done that. It gets very boring without mega-projects.
I've yet to start any real megaprojects. The closest I got was embarking on a volcano and trying to build my entrance so that you had to go through the mouth of the volcano to get in.
I ended up having an incredibly shit miner that procrastinated so much that nothing got done ever.
Attack on Titan Fort is a failure. Despite the name, the cause of the forts 5th or 6th demise is another one of those god damned evil clouds. I can't go through one season without at least half a dozen of those things floating across my embark - some of them aren't even announced and end up consuming whomever is outside before I even realize. Even if I were to finish all the walls, the clouds can and do climb right over them and they can spring up in any non-tiled square inside the fort which often leads to clouds forming right over the main work highway fucking everything up.
The prospect of having to 'batten down the hatches' each time a bit of inclement weather shows up is frightful.
Frankly, I've had enough and would rather take up a new megaproject in a safer, less-cloudy, biome. Anyone have any original suggestions?

The natural state of a dwarf. Why do dwarven babies cry at birth? Because there's suddenly more light than before.
I think I have a migration bug. Basically, I'm not getting any immigrant waves at all (this has gone on for 2 years in-game), even the trade caravan seems to not be coming. I have however noticed a speardwarf and merchant a bit outside my fortress, just standing there with their cart. They occasionally kill a thief but I can't order them or deconstruct the cart. What can I do?

The only thing you CAN do. KILL THEM ALL

That happened to me once but it was with the migrants stuck on the edge of the map, turns out I had just finished a wall around the north side of my only entrance and this blocked them from entering. Not sure why they couldn't use the south side of the same entrance.
Need help with my military. Got three squads of seven, all marksdwarfs, and they cant kill for shit. I sent them out to attack maybe ten/twelve goblins, and they just get destroyed. It seems like they give up shooting and just run at the goblins. Should I make them all melee dwarfs?
Also, should I begin mining? Whats the best way to find caves? How about ores?

I would recommend seeing if your marksdwarfs have ammunition to use, that might be the problem.

Now I want to build a giant domed surface city in a biome with evil clouds. I'm not sure how I'd be able to get anything up fast enough, but it would be an interesting challenge.

Damn it. He was the first and best mechanic. RIP.
[editline]15th October 2013[/editline]
So his corpse is on a bed, and a dwarf is sleeping in that bed. That the vampire?
Vampires don't sleep. Throw him in the dungeon for 10 years just to make sure though.
Yeah, and if he is a vampire? Do some proper Dwarfy atom smashing.

You don't really need to get it up fast though, you can just build a temporary fortress underground with a door blocking the mist. Then you just let your builder squad out while it is safe and set the civilian burrow to only underground when a cloud/monster appears.
Accidentally pulled the wrong lever and flung three of my dwarves into a wall with a bridge. Whoops.
I guess you can just be thankful you didn't accidentally lower the bridge on top of them.

Yeah it wasn't the sleeping guy. I locked him in with the dead dwarf and eventually he became very unhappy. Not only because he was starving and thirsty, but also because he saw his friend decaying in his bed (lol).
A dwarf on a tantrum tore apart my best metalsmith's brain :( This game is so violent.

that's one of the best parts though
adventure mode is hilarious, especially with the extreme violence

Having some trouble with a dwarf that constantly steals the seed barrel from the farmers everytime he needs to brew something. There is nothing in the barrel at all he needs for brewing (i've made double sure of that), but he insists on running back and forth with it, slowing down my farming significantly. Any idea as to what is happening? I must have missed something, but i made sure no seeds are used for brewing, and nothing else is stored in that stockpile.
[editline]15th October 2013[/editline]
Just realized you can't brew with seeds any way. This is really strange.

If I recall correctly, brewing a plump helmet produces seeds, so basically he's finishing a brew and then storing the left over seeds, it happens to me all the time, not sure if I can help with a fix, I just let it solve itself when he eventually goes back and leaves the barrel alone long enough for farmers to grab some seeds
