Anyone else just love watching and reading stuff about Dwarf Frotress but can't play it?
I never feel like i have the time to learn it so i just read threads like this instead.
I went on a few benders of playing it non-stop, especially when my PC was broken and I was on Laptop for a while.
It's actually a really nice back-up game for me, as it runs decently on almost any PC and fits on a USB inside it's own discreet file.
I've considered buying a cheap USP that just fits the game and saves and then carving a little Dorf sculpture around the back so I have a dedicated DF mobile device.

this, ive tried to play 4 times now but cant decipher ASCII screenvomit into FUN even with tilesets.
however DF stories are hilarious.
Not really, it's pretty easy once you get the basics down.
That's like saying flying isn't too hard once you've managed to grow wings

Actually it's more like saying climbing is easy once you've scaled a small cliff face without tools.

Or, well. With a guidebook if you use the wiki.

It's hard but the view is worth it.

I really wanted to play DF but I was put off by the horrendous UI and the final nail in the coffin was the 1,5 hour long "basic tutorial" -video. :v:
**Loads up world I spent yesterday making, about to take screenshots and write up story.**
**It reverted back to the save made near the beginning of the first year, despite it being saved after being done with.**
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO~!
So, doing my first game following the quickstart guide on the wiki, and I had to start my fort in the corner of the map because it was the only proper mountain in the area, but is there any way to move the global view more to the left so I can expand the fort further to the left too? Or is it always going to be like this?

You'll always have that boundary.
Also, if you don't have any decent mountainside, you can always use c[h]anneling in the [d]esignation menu to dig straight down. It creates ramps as you dig, so there's no accessibility issues.

When you choose an embark spot you can choose the embark on a larger area, after you have started playing you can't move outside your embark area or expand it.

Thanks, once I'm done with minimal I'll probably just move the main workshops and area's using tunnels to the middle of the map.

Just don't forget about farms and breweries. Those should be your second and third priorities after digging.

Already started with that, already seeded in some plumps and also busy making a butcher shop because I can't be bothered to give grazers pastures and all that stuff.

Does that Stonesense window run at the the same time or does it have to be rendered or something?
I decided to make a new fort after not playing for like two years
http://i.imgur.com/bhKJM59.png
Apparently I started on top of a kobold cave or something, except there's no cave.
261 dead kobolds and 5 dead dwarves (all drowned) later I have a shitton of free crafts.

Stonesense renders it real-time, it makes it a lot easier to understand what is going on, since I'm still a newbie and have trouble overviewing the situation.
Good luck.
You're gonna need it.
I mastered dwarf fortress yet i can't play Hearts of Iron 3 or Victoria 2 even though i spent as much time trying to learn them as i did with DF
I've stuck the four of the angriest dwarves in my fortress into one squad, and use the danger room to train them to super inhuman(indwarf?) levels.
I can't wait for an seige.
Have fun dealing with a squad of highly trained berserking dwarves afterwards. Angry dwarves are more likely to go berserk when they become unhappy, so when their military friends die the invaders will be the least of your problems.

Whenever I play practically any other rts or city building game I have a hard time grasping the concept of not needing to micromanage. My friend got me to play tribal wars a couple years ago and I remember seriously struggling to understand how farms work. I kept thinking that if my farm wasn't big enough people would start dieng or something.

This is the music I listen to while playing DF.
It almost always rains for me, should I collect the water and use it as a anti-siege weapon?
It almost always rains for me, should I collect the water and use it as a anti-siege weapon?
How would it be used as an anit-siege weapon?
Serious question, I'm a newbie.
It almost always rains for me, should I collect the water and use it as a anti-siege weapon?
I'm still pretty new with Dwarf fortress, you can collect water?
unfortunately water doesn't really work like that, rain won't actually pool around your fortress (but it does in world gen to fill lakes/ponds). All rain does is makes your dwarfs unhappy about being rained on unless they are mentally unstable dwarfs who enjoy the outdoors like an elf.
I think I might end my GLORIOUS WORKER UPRISING, I could handle one reset... but two?
I gotta learn to back up my back up saves, and stop trying to do things during busy weeks.
Finally got my minimal fort up and self sufficient. I also learned that managers are the best things since plump helmets.
How would it be used as an anit-siege weapon?

You need a river for its limitless supply of water to do this, but you can siphon off some of the river using pumps and then release it into the world during sieges. If done right, you can cause flash floods. Bonus points for lava instead of water.
IIRC, Boatmurdered used it to great effect.
For some reason I've never actually used managers before but I was just thinking about it while playing yesterday. I can definitely see the advantages in having one, but I always forget to actually set it up.
I only ever bother using managers when I'm setting up complex or bulk production orders, like manufacturing weapons and armour or soap.

pff they can't die
also there's been no sieges yet and my fortress is 3 years old, odd
goblins did follow a human caravan to my fort so I assume they can reach it
