I remember in my DF modding days, I was making a few dinosaur creatures, and it was going really well. I was real proud of my Spino, which could use both its claws and its jaws, but prioritized the claws. It was amphibious too of course.
The Trex was one of the first I made, and it was fairly simple. It was extremely fast and ruthless, and just chomped shit to death. One day, during a test of the Spino's final version, I discovered it wasn't as complete as I thought. I was pitting the two against each other, and the Spino was kicking its ass for the most part.
Then the Trex grabbed it by the neck and started choking it to death. That day I learned how to properly disable grasping capabilities.
My favorite part about DF is that when Toady goes over the bug list, he sounds more like an irresponsible god than a programmer.

After like 2 hours of trying different things i finally managed to pump this volcano empty- oh wait the water wheel is powered by water.. nevermind it filled up again
Guys.
I breached the circus and they all flew up an unbreached tube. I slapped some floors over the path to the circus itself.
Did I just win the game?

There will probably be some clowns that can break the floors you put there. It's not easy to contain them, I think you'll find.

My friend claims they can only break stuff on the same level as them. I dunno if this is true.
Either way, they aren't even trying to get up that particular tube. It's like they got the wrong memo, that the other tube is breached instead of this one.

You can't win Dwarf Fortress, Only delay losing

To a lesser extent.
To really win the game you have to descend to hell and kill every demon ever and then move your main fortress to hell :v:
(i am pretty sure this can not be feasibly done)

There are infinite demons that keep coming in from the sides, but you can certainly establish a tower there or something if you are a badass and want a challenge.

I heard someone managed to do so. Someone invaded the circus and fucked 'em up, and had a thread about it.
And the Wiki confirms that clowns can only destroy stuff on the same zlevel. Checkmate, circus. You lose.

floors and walls are completely indestructible anyway IIRC
(short of [d][n])
I am going to have adamantine oven mitts for every child by the end of this.
Is that a challenge?
Y'know what, I'm going to try it right now.
EDIT:
Nope. Alligators happened.
Yeah I think you have to walloff all the edges of the circus using bridges and other sorcery.
No idea how you could feasibly get your dwarves to do that without getting murderated by clowns. Even just elite military dwarves in full candy suits have trouble with them.

maybe just excavate a magma-curtain around the edges of the map?
maybe just excavate a magma-curtain around the edges of the map?
Clowns are immune to lava, so that would do jack shit.
Create some sort of obsidian wall forming device I guess.
So I got ambushed twice, by goblins. One appeared after the other. I think 3 adult dwarves and a child got caught outside, died, then the goblins went after the elf caravan that was there at the time. They died too.
As the first (smaller) group went into the hallway that led into the fort, they were confronted with a single dwarf; one wielding a steel shortsword and a copper shield, while wearing only a few pieces of copper armor. The fortresses' only defender? Or perhaps he just got caught outside after the doors were shut?
The dwarf's first act was cutting both arms off the first goblin. A grisly death later, the dwarf moved onto two others, dismembering them in a fantastic fashion. The rest of the first group retreated and seemed to join up with the other ambush, which was still outside the outer wall. The dwarf stood at the center of the trade depot, ignoring orders as he observed the carnage the goblins had created.
The goblins evidently didn't see him as they came into the fort proper, and began their march inward. Just before they reached the hall, however, the dwarf charged into the lot of them, evading blow after blow as he did. Each slash removed a limb, and each strike of his pommel crushed bones. In a matter of seconds, the goblin army was reduced to three. Two more were chased down as they ran; one lost its head to a scratch in the retreat.
And all the while Prosnorkulus dubstep played in the background. This one rivals the glory of the God Empress of yore, I know it.

It used to be, several years ago a friend of mine colonized Hell and moved his dining room down there and held a feast for the squad that did it, dressed in a cloak, pants and armed with spear and shield.

Holy shit. May i have a link if you have one?
Some of the redditors from /r/dwarffortress asked me to do an Ask Me Anything (see http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/), and if I understand how scheduling works, that'll now be happening on Saturday, March 23rd at 7PM EDT, and last for an undetermined amount of time.
Zach and I both managed to get a nasty non-flu (thankfully) thingy, so I've been sleeping a lot and hating the sun even more than normal. I did get some indicators to pop up during combat that sort of flow out and show you what actions are on-going, and you'll make some more active decisions about defending and counter-attacking once I recover enough to not add a zillion bugs by working sick like an idiot. I still think you'll be able to just click toward somebody if you don't want to bother thinking about a combat, but you'll be subject to the computer's sub-par decision-making as usual, and there'll be many more potential decisions to be made. Overall, things'll still be a little nuts since there aren't really any lulls in the action, but the flow should be more varied and interesting. We'll see how it turns out.
Oh god, total control over ongoing attacks. Fuck fortress mode.
I like how adventure mode interactivity is being improved, before you could be a monster hunter, now you can be a revolutionary too.

It'd be way easier if everyone in AM didn't apparently live as groups of eight per each one room cottage.
A Succession Fortress on Bay12 colonized hell once
It's been done several times since then, too.
One of the guys on the bay12 forums found a way to trap demons in a grid thing, then cast them in obsidian.
It worked so well that there's only the odd demon that wanders onto the map now.
I can't remember if he colonised hell or not.
I can't remember if he colonised hell or not.
We won't be able to truly colonize hell until you can put caged prisoners to work in the fields.
i was playing adventure mode exploring a fort i had found. i looked around a bit and then i saw this.

i laughed for a few minutes there.

Oh man, seriously? I have an ugly tendency to slaughter whole villages, so now I can do it consequence-free!
