Do children ever grow up to be useful or do fortress's died of FPS drop by then?
They grow up to be farmers and the occasional craftsdwarf.
It's better to feed them to the Depths (praise be to Armok) and count on immigrants to replace losses.

I've been wanting to dispose of children but I'm worried about tantrums.
If I were to end up getting an Artifact, say, steel sword, how would it be better than a normal steel sword?

Artifact weapons get a large ×3 quality bonus to their weapon accuracy and armor deflection values (compared to ×2 to masterwork); this is not enough to make totally inappropriate materials competitive with steel masterwork equipment. Also note that while they will be half again more accurate, artifact blades do not have a sharper edge than masterwork items of their material; in other words, their material type modifiers remain unchanged, and they will do no more damage than a regular item of their type (though they will never dull.)
Dispose of the tantrumers.
Then everyone else.

Thanks.

That's why you put a gold statue in their room.
Meaningless material comforts are the best things to use in filling that child-shaped hole in their hearts.

Especially child shaped statues.
Covered in a child's blood.

Maybe a statue made OUT of child thanks to Fell moods.

Or, in the event that fell moods don't happen, make young dorfite by encasing them in obsidian and then carving a statue from the rock mined from it.
God damn that reminds me I need to play again so I can construct another obsidian forge, I fucking loved that shit.
Do armours and weapons with the fancy indicators around the name of them have better stats than the ones without? Or just more interesting looks? I often (In adventure mode) use time to switch my armor or weapon with one that has the fancy brackets around them, and I am wondering if this is time wasted?
A decorated object is no better than the regular object, apart from value and such.
A higher quality level is better.
So star icons or other quality markers are good, but << >> (iirc) just means someone shoved a diamond into the hilt or whatnot.

asterisks around the item indicate higher quality?
Asterisks are superior quality (4x value modifier)
☼ is masterful (12x value modifier) and such.
If you are forcing yourself to play dwarf fortress, you arent going to have much fun.
You kidding? There was a whole tonne of fun :v:

That's a fucking nasty fall he had.
I like how he was only knocked unconscious after having his skull jammed through his brain. Aside from the whole tearing apart thing.

What happened? Did he fall down a cliff face or something?

I was making a skylight for my deep-underground mess hall
I was making a skylight for my deep-underground mess hall
So you built a tower above where you want the skylight to go and had him jump off hoping to make a hole right? Right??

Nah I had all my industry at soil level and I had living quarters down in the rocks. That's above 7 z-levels. I wanted it to be 3x3 but instead of him digging one layer at a time he dug completely at random. When he reached the bottom, he had to take the stairs back to the surface but on his second round of digging it was a haphaz- ahh fuck it lemme just show you:

Anyone know if it's possible for all the walls to have the same color after you smooth them?
Som of it is marble, some is cobaltite and some is phyllite.

Only if you tear down the wrongly colored walls and build a new one that has the right color.

And how about floors?
You can't change that unless you build floors, but you can't engrave on built floors.
You can't change that unless you build floors, but you can't engrave on built floors.
I see, thanks.
You can use dfhack to swap materials I think. Cheating yes, annoying yes, worth it if you have OCD, yes.
The fact you can't engrave built floors is the bane of my fucking existence when it comes to fortress design.

I hate when my proletariat dwarves end up with gem walls in their bedrooms.
I'm going to obsidian cast an above ground fortress. THIS WILL TAKE FOREVER!
But I can engrave it!
Obsidian casting is literally the best thing ever if you are insane and skilled enough to do it.
Obsidian casting is literally the best thing ever if you are insane and skilled enough to do it.
It really can be so fucking cool if you somehow manage to do it properly. I have only managed to do it fully correctly, on a small scale in the 40d version.

Masterworks have a 2x hit chance (weapons) and 2x deflection roll chance (armor), and legendary/artifact qualities give a 3x bonus. The bonuses of anything between standard and masterwork is unknown.
