That was one of the best threads I ever read.
Oh man, seriously? I have an ugly tendency to slaughter whole villages, so now I can do it consequence-free!
Man, once I slaughtered an entire village at night. Going house to house, chopping people's heads off in their sleep. Nobody was left alive but it totally ruined my game when the villagers the next town over knew what I did. It would have just been so satisfying if I was a mysterious serial-killer nobody knows.
Holy shit. May i have a link if you have one?

I've really run this fort into the ground. Half the military is dead or insane from the horrors of hell, six or so forsaken beasts are locked away in the caverns, the road into Deathgate has been painted with troll blood, we've slaughtered about 400 innocent animals via liberal application of a boot to the ass, a deer with its liver hanging out of its chest after two siege bolts to the face is still scaring the piss out of people using the old doom-bridge, and we have about a dozen ghosts routinely harassing our dwarves since I can't find or reach their corpses. As I speak, lava is pouring down the side of the mountain in the hopes it burns some of those damned goblins sieging us to death or at least drives them towards the troll-blood bridge. On the flip side, Armok's temple is almost complete and we've stolen enough goods from the humans to piss them off for a good decade.

I love how the preface of nearly every starting post after the first few turns are always something along the lines of, "This place makes no sense at all."
So the new version of DFHack lets your adventurer interact with the world (build, destroy, tame, fish, mine, etc).
I was making a house, made from wood of my neighbors (I dismantled their houses). All that was left was a floor and some furniture. So I went off to dismantle more homes when suddenly:

...
Ooops.
Edit: Aaaaand it appears I made a hole to hell. If you guys accidentally or intentially collapse something, it's in your best interest to run. You've just made a volcano.

Edit 2: Wait, scratch that. Whatever collapses just gets so hot it explodes into magma.
Devlog:
That lasted longer than I thought it would, but I'll be back in the dwarfy saddle tonight. Yesterday I managed to set up the active parry/block/dodge menu I mentioned last time. It works as sort of an extension to the old shift-A strike-or-wrestle menu for detailed combat actions. As before, you'll still have reflexive chances to do some of these things when attacked without having to set them up, but it won't be nearly as effective as making the choice to respond in a certain way (although committing to, say, batting somebody's attack away with your own weapon might heavily reduce your reflexive dodge chances). Making active decisions will also lead to your ability to counter-strike or to otherwise give you an opening to take initiative. Your dwarves and the enemies you fight will have access to any new combat features as well, of course, and the AI they use'll be the same AI you use when you press toward somebody (that is, when you don't use the new menu and just walk into people to fight).
Another side effect of actionifying everything is that attacking multiple enemies is far more dangerous now. Even at the highest skill levels, parrying eight attacks simultaneously with one weapon is no longer possible, for instance, whereas before you could do it without any negative effects at all. Dodging out of your square would still work, and having multiple incoming attacks might be a good reason to choose this action. Committing your weapon to defensive actions also means it is not attacking, although creating opportunities for counter-strikes should mitigate that and allow the direction of combat to flip back and forth.
Also, Toady's AMA thing is later today, at 7 PM (Eastern Daylight Time).
Can't parry 8 simultaneous attacks? I think this update will be the end of danger rooms...
Why? If you're using training spears, you'll still parry or your armour will still deflect at least one of them without risk of being impaled.
Maybe, armour user is the last one to get trained up in my experience and this might help. If Toady was ever going to put in a little thing about too many simultaneous attacks to stop danger rooms, now would be the time.
Thing is if your dwarves are properly dressed the wooden training weapons will practically never pierce any metal rmor.

If you don't have the brain fix then even the slightest tap could potentially cause a Dwarf's brains to explode out of even the most heavily armored head.

If the blow penetrates, in my experience dwarves can get mauled in the head forever while unconsicious without a scratch if they have an adamantine helmet.

I still find the lack of a functional skull one of the DF combat system's greatest features.
"You lie down in the bed"
"Gravity scratches your head, fracturing the skull and jamming it through the brain!"

dwarves make up for their soft skulls with strong arms

Oh
that would explain all the deaths in my danger rooms...
dangerous rooms indeed
my only problem with danger rooms is I forget to give dorfs hoodies so they all come out of danger rooms missing ears and noses
half of them sometimes die from infections, they are basically spartans

Oh my god
This is what I've been waiting for ever since I started playing DF
Ding Ding Ding
http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/1avszc/im_tarn_adams_of_bay_12_games_cocreator_of_dwarf/
It started about half an hour ago, but oh well.
The thought of Toady doing meth is a very strange one
Dear god, the AMA is finally live.
Now I have something to suck up my saturday evening's attention span.
EDIT: Shameless thread bump as well. To echo poster above.. toady did meth once? He doesn't eat healthy? AND I HAD NO IDEA that DF was a full-time project; I thought it was coded during time off/etc.
The thought of Toady doing meth is a very strange one
It doesn't actually surprise me that much, I mean, with all the wondrous scenarios that can happen, many of us have exclaimed "Was Toady on meth when he made this!?"
I re-downloaded DF again. Now it seems like my idlers don't want to do anything, like hauling. Also I find it fun when Elven caravans come and I kill the merchants, destroy the depot, and get free stuff.
I still find Fortress mode to be impossible, even after following the wiki... everything just seems to go wrong! Any tips?
I still find Fortress mode to be impossible, even after following the wiki... everything just seems to go wrong! Any tips?
that's the game
you will never have a successful fortress
think of every fortress as a learning experience, and try to have it last longer the next time

Don't get mad every time something bad happens, just take it in stride and let the hilarity of the terrible disasters wash over you.

I force my potential soldiers to spend a few years in the caverns, with nothing more than what they can find, if they can survive the perils of the caverns with only daggers and the food caches that I control for them, they can be soldiers.

I'm ready.
Edit: I'm a grand master at what I do, and what I do has a creamy filling.
So I downloaded DFHack to play around with adventure mode fort controls, and then this happened:

I'm wearing a helmet so they're just clinking against it.
[editline]haha, not really any automerge[/editline]
And then a random merchant came over and butchered all the cats. My savior.
[editline]okay an actual automerge[/editline]
And another random merchant came and put me out of my misery.
Been ages since I played DF so I decided to get back into it with a new game.
Barely even an hour in, one of my dwarf females is "taken by a fey mood" and proceeds to create some magical gem and become a legendary gem cutter.
I forgot how much fun this shit was
[editline]28th March 2013[/editline]
The gems disapeared...
