I need some help, my hunters are spamming "cancels hunt: could not find path." I thought it might have been that they wanted to cross the river, so I built a bridge, but they're still spamming this message. Also another question relating to hunting, my butchers workshop is filled with bones and skulls, even though I have a refuse stockpile specifically for bones and skulls, how do I get my dwarves to take the bones to the pile?
Im not getting any of the ores of iron in my world? Anyone know whats going on?

Yes, my pages upon pages of puppy and kitten bone goods are quite 'ethical' [editline]18th November 2013[/editline] ETHICAL! [editline]18th November 2013[/editline] This will be the emblem of my fortress
adventure mode is not on my side today i got killed by being kicked in the head by a horse (instadeath) and now I just was encased in ice trying to swim across a river
If dwarves were meant to swim, Armok would have given them gills.
If dwarves were meant to swim, Armok would have given them gills.
Then how come my dorfs swim through the blood of whatever, their neighbor, a goblin, acidic slime creatures that cause seizures, whatever.
If dwarves were meant to swim, Armok would have made water alcoholic.
Fixed.
Fixed.
they would just drink the river instead of swim trough it. [editline]19th November 2013[/editline] that is if they don't throw a tantrum once their non-stop supply of booze stops.
non-stop supply of booze stops.
..
Quick, someone edit water to be alcohol.
Quick, someone edit water to be alcohol.
Unfortunately, I believe water is hardcoded, as is magma. It's a pity, because I'm sure someone could figure out nonstandard liquid combinations.
A couple dingos started antagonizing my fort. Not sure what happened here, looks like a dingo somehow flew into another dingo? There's no record of them being thrown or anything. [t]http://i.imgur.com/2hGAq7m.png[/t] This guy takes advantage of this by choking the shit out of one dingo. The rest ran away when they saw this.
Unfortunately, I believe water is hardcoded, as is magma. It's a pity, because I'm sure someone could figure out nonstandard liquid combinations.
Just remove the dorfs need for alcohol in the raws, allowing them to drink water to satisfy thirst, it's P much the same thing, sans the burning of your oceans in the event of fun.

the water would have to be ignitable? well that is assuming it is pure ethanol
heresy
I'm not the one asking how to edit things that are hard-coded. That is literally the only workaround to that idea to achieve a similar effect.
the water would have to be ignitable? well that is assuming it is pure ethanol
Move over magma traps, booze is the WMD of the future.
This thing arrived at my fort. I immediately sent my 6 man strong hammerdwarf squad at it. He eviscerated them in seconds. People were too slow to raise the drawbridge and he got in. I had to conscript half of my fort (50 dwarfs) to kill him. What ensued was 50 angry dorfs chasing a Roc around my stockpile room for days, him killing one every now and then. A war dog or something managed to stun him and the 50 dorfs all formed a kicking circle. They kicked him for a good month before he died, but by then it was too late The damage is done. These are the end times. [editline]19th November 2013[/editline] AH YES JUST IN TIME, COME JOIN THE MAYHEM [editline]19th November 2013[/editline] THE FUN DOESN'T END [editline]19th November 2013[/editline] Pictured: The bottom of the well. People are pushing each other down it. There's near half a dozen corpses down there.
Such is the life in the world of Dwarf Fortress. I just wonder how people get to the ages of 80+ or even 20+ without being eaten, crushed, eviscerated, shot, blown up, poisoned, turned into a zombie, drowned, burned, etc. The list goes on for quite a while.
Here's a picture of my fort in its final moments. Pictured here is the second forgotten beast mercilessly mowing down dorfs. It has killed 40 so far in its lust for murder. [editline]19th November 2013[/editline] The beast took down all 70 dwarfs, except for the mayor who is sleeping. Welp
So, how do you guys recommend defending a fort where the only metal is zinc? Lots and lots of traps? Or marksdwarves with wood/bone bolts?
So, how do you guys recommend defending a fort where the only metal is zinc? Lots and lots of traps? Or marksdwarves with wood/bone bolts?
Lots and lots of trade [editline]19th November 2013[/editline] Does anyone have an updated version of Orkel's balance fix? I can only find his square ASCII fix and outdated versions of the balance fix
So, how do you guys recommend defending a fort where the only metal is zinc? Lots and lots of traps? Or marksdwarves with wood/bone bolts?
I just spam serrated disc traps. It doesn't matter if those discs are made of goddamn copper as long as you put down fifty of 'em.
I just spam serrated disc traps. It doesn't matter if those discs are made of goddamn copper as long as you put down fifty of 'em.
Can't make those out of zinc though. If I'm going to make weapon traps, they'd have to have wooden weapons in them. I think my best options trap-wise would be stone-fall traps, cage traps, and pit traps.
If you have sand make glass serrated discs.
I make glass trap things all the time but I end up selling them for completely bonkers prices instead of actually using them
Can't make those out of zinc though. If I'm going to make weapon traps, they'd have to have wooden weapons in them. I think my best options trap-wise would be stone-fall traps, cage traps, and pit traps.
Cage traps are ridiculously powerful, I use the fuck out of them. If you capture shit using equipment, you can also melt it down to get weapons-grade metal out of it. A little bit, at least. [editline]20th November 2013[/editline] You definitely do not want to make the cages out of zinc, though. Their weight will mean it'll take forever to re-arm your cage traps.
My environment is really sparse on the resources. No weapons-grade metals, no sand, very few trees. I might just have to spam the fuck out of stone-fall traps, with deep pits for enemies to dodge into.
Exploit the low cost of wood and mass-produce zinc crafts to trade the elves. You don't need a shit load of wooden cages, but they're the lightest cages available and it's worth it.
