A thread on r/dwarffortress made me realize I've been playing this game for 4 years. Holy christ time flies. I started somewhere in the area of 0.31.17, how bout you guys.

When 2010 came out I remember /r/dwarffortress thought it was a joke, but nope, totally real. I had the misfortune of really getting into that right before my senior year finals in college.
I think i started when the first "3d" version was quite new still? so around 2007 if i think correctly?
I first touched the game in 07', but didn't actually learn to play it until early 2012 [editline]20th February 2014[/editline] and a very tiny update to the op
I remember starting DF back in the good old 2D days.
what the fuck. I tried to make a channel with my dwarves due to being on a flat area, but noooo, were to lazy and want to get fucked in the night instead of digging it. this is the only reason I have never gotten into DF
Tried picking up adventure mode for the first time in the past few months. Immediately got demolished when I tried to wrestle a wild yak. Second time things went better, I stabbed a baby cave boar to death and then threw its body at other cave boars until they fell over and then threw them into trees. One issue that I ran into is that after I threw my dagger, I couldn't figure out how to get it out of my left hand and into my backpack. This greatly impaired my boar throwing capabilities.
Current planned features for adventure mode sound amazing. May wait until they are released to try to get into it again.
Is there a working mod for newest DF that fixes the whole skull/brain destroyed issue for combat?
Is there a working mod for newest DF that fixes the whole skull/brain destroyed issue for combat?
Yes, It really should be added to the OP. It also fixes whips iirc, but I don't have the link.
Yes, It really should be added to the OP. It also fixes whips iirc, but I don't have the link.
Well guess its time to google and find something hopefully. [editline]21st February 2014[/editline] Was it this mod? http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=53100.0

there isn't one, will remake once new version is out in the meantime you can just play with masterwork mod, it includes my brain fix
Combat in .31.01 is a little strange. A quick look at the raws reveals many inconsistencies in the numbers that lead to quirks such as the dominance of axes and two-handed swords while rendering ranged weapons and blunt weapons near worthless. Strange materials like gold hammers do better than iron... etc.
Considering that ranged weapons are fucking ridiculous in vanilla right now, probably not. Especially since we're very much not in .31.01.
there isn't one, will remake once new version is out in the meantime you can just play with masterwork mod, it includes my brain fix
But that would mean having to deal whit 99.9% of the other stupid shit in masterwork.
But that would mean having to deal whit 99.9% of the other stupid shit in masterwork.
No it doesn't because almost all of Masterwork can be turned off?
So I started a Kobold Camp game yesterday. I was kind of at a loss for what to do, because I'm so used to starting dwarf games. I just kinda flailed around for almost the entire first year, but I finally managed to get my head back on straight and built up a two story wooden building to serve as a dining room and bunkhouse. The water on the map froze for what felt like half the year, so I was scrambling during Winter and most of Spring to keep some booze stockpiled to avoid deaths. Once I started getting more migrants and was able to kick up my productions everything got smoother; I started mass gathering clay and constructed a two-story apartment complex with clay walls and wooden roof/floors for the majority of my kobolds. Had a basic stealing tunnel set up, was making good amounts of food for trade, had about 6 kobolds on fishing duty during the warmer parts of the year. Everything was going pretty good. Then one of my woodcutters had a strange mood. They claimed my craftsbold workshop, which - annoyingly - halted all production of pots, which was irritating but not significant. Of course, having 0 production skills the little bastard chose stonecrafting as its craft and demanding 1 stone boulder. So I spammed the 'steal boulder' job at the tunnel. Months passed. I had a kobold there 24/7 failing miserably at stealing a piece of fucking stone. I joked that the mooded kobold was going to be the downfall of my camp. Ten minutes later? "The enemy has arrived to siege the fortress." A full squad of axedwarves apparently got sick of my kobolds and decided to come deal with my camp. Which they did. Gruesomely. Even with every single kobold drafted, we only managed to kill 3 out of like 12 before getting wiped out. At least one of those was because of an animated sword I bought and war-trained. I didn't really like the world though, all of it was calm. 0 challenge from wildlife.
Oh man I remember why I love this game, just tore off some bandit's hand and then killed him by throwing his own hand at him and having it jam his skull through his brain :v:
So I accidentally had a stairway exposed to a cave system and my dwarves were exploring it before I could close it off. One of them, was hunting down there and got his right leg ripped off. He was lying on the ground left to die when my mayor/vampire saves him. I looked into his info and noticed he had no friends or family. He did though worship gods of wealth, trade, metals, rumors, and fame. Seeing as he probably wished to be in power I decided to replace my current mediocre manager with him. He now walks with a crutch, but otherwise has recovered. It is always nice to see the unexpected happen. I didn't think he would even live.
Been trying to get into this, used mods, textures, guides, everything and i can't stick with it and actually learn the game. Is it just not for me?

I already tried using LNP and a video guide that i hadn't tried yet earlier, said fuck it at the embark screen because i couldn't find an area without an aquifer that also had metals, flux stone and decent temps.
