They wont be obsolete, anything you have and are able to ascend to 365 will still be amazing for previous content. Fatebringer, black hammer, whatever, will still be amazingly solid choices in vanilla destiny content, the dark below content, house of wolves content.

Is there even a reason why people with year 1 gear should go back and play year 1 content after Taken King?
Only excuse I can think of to keep that gear around, is if year 1 story missions/strikes pop up in a daily/weekly/nightfall, they stay at 20 and aren't upped to Taken Kings max level. But who knows how often that would even happen.

You realize you can still do old strikes and raids for fun, yeah? You can go through them with friends, chat, laugh, have gimmick runs, have a good time about it. Just because it doesn't offer you stuff doesn't mean there's no point in it.
But if you are stuck in that though process, you can still do older stuff to get materials to convert to motes for end-game purposes.
god forbid we pay this much for an expansion that more than doubles all of year 1's equipment and content, including upgrading year 1 content at its core, plus new challenge levels to everything to give you reason to revisit everything, if people could just pay a bit of time into leveling their thorn and gjallerhorn to stay on top of the meta
it's an expansion, not a map pack
Honestly, the more they show, the more it looks like a new game rather than just an expansion.
I'm surprised Activision, of all companies, is letting it be a DLC. They could of easily just stopped after HoW and moved on to a sequel.

I think it's a smart move compared to a fresh release, you get tons of base content to work with and you don't divide up the player base, even if people don't want/can't afford the new expansion immediately.
Hopefully they let you change your appearance again with this new expansion. I like being an Exo, but I don't really like the red and black colors I selected.
I just wish they'd add cosmetic slots already, the Holdfast set looks too good to leave behind

S'pretty fun, initial impressions are that I like all three of the master chiefs you can play and this game is super pretty but I have three questions:
1. what is hunting
2. who is crucible (I don't think it's me)
3. which gun is the coolest and why is it The Last Word

TTK is adding an exotic kiosk where you can pull out a new exotic, during the reveal they showed that only certain exotic weapons and armor will be upgradable in year 2. Rightfully so, people are upset that many useful pieces of armor and certain weapons are essentially being removed from the game, some of which haven't even been buffed/nerfed yet to make them useful.
Is Xur's Body armor engram always the same?
I just got this from one of those and I'm so happy. (Not because it's particularly useful, but my god it's so pretty)

No, it's a random chance of any exotic chest piece.
Also Alpha Lupi is pretty damn useful for PoE/ToO/Nightfall.
I'd use it all time if it was Int instead of Strength.
