Wow, Fallout 4 actually looks like a game that came out of a regular 2015 development company and not just Bethesda. It looks like they finally freed themselves of a tons of restrictions and started to fully realize their potential.
It's really crazy, can't wait to see what they'll do with TESVI.

Some stuff with the shooting and animations looked a bit sketch, but hopefully the next Elder Scrolls should be well made.
They certainly won't get 20 voice actors in to voice all the races for the protagonist though.
not a good idea to revisit the imperial city considering eso's graphics look just as dated as oblivion's
Trying to pump up the game graphically by updating the textures and such. Goal is to have close to no performance loss, at least indoors.

Probably because they aren't limited by the decade old technology used in the Xbox 360 and PS3 now.

Yeah, but when you played it you found out that it took a mod to spawn more than 20 or so random NPCs without the game crashing because of its insane memory limitations and this limited the scale of the game. FO4 looks like it finally got over that and they're able to now implement some crazy features, such as the jetpack, individualized armor pieces and customization for everything.
I do like seeing Bethesda games improve gradually like this, though I wish their animator was a bit better.

when skyrim was announced people were also blown away by the new features like dual wielding weapons or magic and a ton of other things that turned out to be not as good as advertised or just scrapped in the final product, a good example are the lumber mills that literally do nothing than lock your player in a cool animation for a couple of seconds
it's pretty much the cycle of bethesda games:
1. new bethesda games is announced
2. people get hyped that it may fix what the previous game(s) did wrong
3. the game is released
4. people put over 100 hours into it and get bored
5. people mod the shit out of their games
6. people get bored again
5. people complain the game isn't as fun any more and focus more on what it did wrong
6. repeat

anyone remember this thing?

What mods are you using?
So I just had the weirdest thing that's ever happened to me in Skyrim occur: loaded up an old save in Riverwood to do some mod testing, when suddenly the game's imagespace turns really bright, the sky starts to glow and pulse, and some combat music that I'm pretty sure I've never heard before starts coming over the speakers.
Just a mod conflict, I know, but it was the closest thing to a "watch the skies" moment I've had in this game.
Fallout 4 so far looks like an extremely mixed bag, in my opinion.
On one hand, the new weapon/armor customization looks really radical, and the settlement building looks potentially very cool, although it'll depend a lot on how they deal with settlers. The combat looks like a huge improvement over the previous games, and the addition of a jetpack makes me somewhat optimistic that maybe they've finally stopped making cities instanced.
But on the other hand, I don't think having a voiced protagonist is a good idea, the new dialogue system looks, frankly, terrible, and the main characters background is way too specific for my liking as well. Furthermore, it seems like they might have removed skills, and the fact that mods are available on consoles makes me pretty afraid that they might be limiting how much we can actually mod.
It's coming out in less than half a year though, so I guess we'll see pretty soon.
I don't mind voiced protagonists actually. Not a fan of the dialogue wheel, but I've never been terribly bothered by voiced PC's.
Maybe it's just my personality, even though I'm an RPG nut I've never really gotten into the "I'm the PC" mindset and to me it's always a story about another person, which I find more interesting. I suppose if I was RP'ing myself have a voiced PC would suck, but as that's not the case I find it sort of neat, makes the PC seem like a person rather than an everyman
Not sure how the same thing would pan out in Elder Scrolls though, TES character have always been mostly devoid of personality so it might not mesh well if Bethesda opted for that in TES: VI

Or, at least that's what bethesda has to live up to now. They set their own standard!
I cannot wait to tactically upgrade my sword and horse armour in TES VI
Isn't it true that Bethesda just announced a TES Moba coming to PC and... tablets? Is this what the Elder Scrolls franchise will become? After the success of Skyrim I'm very disappointed they seem to be doing this.

No. They announced a ridiculous card game that will be quickly forgotten, but I have a feeling that's Zenimax and not Bethesda again. Has to be a different part of Bethesda, at the very least.

Literally Hearthstone: Elder Scrolls edition.
I especially liked how most of the artwork they showed looked straight out of World of Warcraft.

I wouldn't say the TES protagonist lacks personality, they just have like 3 running at the same time that you can choose inbetween. They're written pretty simply, yeah, but there's the neutral option, the bad dude option and the good dude option. If you stick to one set of responses and behaviors you do have a pretty well set personality.
Either way, I don't think a voiced protagonist can work on TES purely because of the scale. There's ten races plus two genders for each which is a total of 20 unique sets of recorded lines for all the player dialogue, not to mention that if you want the Khajiits and Argonians to be authentic you have to factor in the way the special way they talk.
It'd be nice if the main race of the next TES had a voice actor for the PC, i.e since the game is Black Marsh the playable argonian race will have voiced dialogue.

Only animation problem I noticed was that the AI still does that thing where it sometimes just stops for a second for no discernible reason.

Look at the part where he commands the dog to fetch a wrench.
They've clearly made a fuckload of improvements, but it is definitely still Bethbryo at its core and they haven't fixed everything yet.

yeah because every game has perfect animations. /s

yes how dare I point out a flaw in a game
how could i possibly have the nerve to not be in blind and absolute adoration for a video game at all times and pretend flaws don't exist
what is fucking wrong with me

Why would they limit the mods though? There's no gain against other people since there isn't multiplayer, achievements will totally be disabled when any mod is used, and it was shown before that regular mods worked fine in Gamebryo/Creation engine games on consoles. I believe people have managed to put mods into New Vegas and Skyrim on the PS3 without any real issues.
achievements will totally be disabled when any mod is used
When was the last time Bethesda did that ever? Not even NV did that, and it disabled achievements for using console commands.
When was the last time Bethesda did that ever? Not even NV did that, and it disabled achievements for using console commands.
On consoles it would make sense though. Gamerscore and Trophies hold a bit more meaning than Steam achievements, and I doubt neither Microsoft nor Sony would want people to mod their way to get them.
It will happen anyway through some manner but it makes sense to disable achievements when using mods on consoles.
Man I hate achievements.
Man I hate achievements.
then don't achieve them
it's not that hard not to achieve things

FO4 is a role playing game in the literal semantic sense. You're not making a character and then setting out, you're simply determining what role your survivor/android/babby fills out in the worldspace.
The irony is it's basically what Mass Effect was trying to do but never really made it into. The best Bioware game will be FO4, where you take a premade guy or gal and remix them, and play along in a set piece chain story.
That's also Skyrim's problem, so you can expect more of the same I'd say, based on the fact FO4 is already up to a million pre-orders worldwide, so it's blatantly obviously going to be successful. As a series of setpieces, Skyrim is pretty good. As a representation of established lore, Skyrim makes pretty much zero sense. If you're a dunmer or khajiit or argonian, no one has a problem with that, it never comes up. If you side with ulfric stormfront, the most people will do is grumble at you; if you join the imperials, you can still buddy up at the thalmor embassy or go hang out and dig up some ore in the Stormcloak mines and shoot the shit with everybody, and guards just glare at you.
Skyrim has event resolves, Skyrim doesn't have any consequences.
For anything.
It's pretty likely that in two to three years when the next installment rolls around, not much will change in that department, and your Argonian Eclipse, told of in the khajiit prophecies to "restore the moons to their circle" will sound suspiciously just like your Nord counterpart.
Business will come first, and actually forcing players to consider day one choices on day 92 will never happen in a Beth game, cause someone might complain that they can't do everything in a single play-through.
Man I hate achievements.
Achievements aren't an issue.
Except multiplayer ones that require you to do specific shit that'll see people doing nothing in your game worth while except work towards earning it
What mods are you using?
Enhanced Lights and FX, Climates of Tamriel, IMAGINATOR.
For textures it's a mix of Skyrim HD, aMidianBorn Caves and Mines and Gamwich's numerous texture replacers.
I've finished writing the article and it should be published sometime this week if all goes well.
