So, after picking up Oblivion GOTY on Steam I decided to restart my playtrough in Oblivion after starting for a small bit in it a few weeks ago with my physical CD copy for the first time.
I'm now around 14 hours into the game, and with the main quest I'm at "The Path of Dawn" part. I've joined the Fighter's Guild and got to do some interesting quests so far, like defending rats in a basement from Mountain Lions. Most of my time I've put in just exploring Cyrodill with my horse, taking it it's rich landscapes and landmarks, and I'm enjoying it thoroughly.
I do wonder, are there some quests/places that I absolutely should check out? I wanna do/discover most of the "standout" quests/places before I move over to Skyrim for the first time as well. Also, I love that there's so much to do in this game, enough to keep atleast 3 playtroughs fresh.
All of the guilds are worth doing I'd say. In terms of misc quests theres just too many to list. Just do whatever comes up during the game.
Also check out the painter at chyedinhal (lolfuckspelling) as thatll give you a fairly interesting quest.

And of course the daedric quests are hella
Oblivion had amazing and unique quests, I honestly was rather disappointed by how lame Skyrims Dark Brotherhood questline was compared to oblivion.
If only it werent for oblivion being clunky.
Oblivion objectively has the best quests in the series. All the Guilds are unique and interesting plus there's tons of other side quests that also have cool stuff going on.
Even the Main Quest had many great moments in it.
Skyrim's quests are just forgettable.

The Fighter's Guild questline isn't that great. Not bad, but not that great.
All the other questlines are super fucking radical, especially the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood.
If an Oblivion remake came out with Skyrim's simpler mechanics and kinda less clunky everything I'd be so into that shit. I don't know why but I absolutely detest how needlessly complicated Oblivion can get.
Oblivion also had a really nice soundtrack and the design of everything but the high tier armors was really cool.

Oblivion complicated? Click button, kill things.
Want magic? Equip magic, clic C and puff magic wand
Want to climb a mountain? Just strafe and mash jump.
Want to finish a quest? Use your magical GPS.
Morrowind is in another league, mash button, attempt to hit things. Whoops, stamina gone.
Want magic? Depends on your skill, your magicka, intelligence and some stuff. Oh, guess what, it's a separate button (R) and the hands animation takes a shitton of time. If you're lucky it won't fail to cast.
Want to climb a mountain? Mash strafe and jump, lose all the stamina and a gang of cliff racers will come screeching in your general direction.
Want to finish a quest? It's really simple, just follow the coast until you find that dick shaped rock, the argonian dick, not the khajiiti one, then you go south and when you find a funny looking grass patch go south east and then that's the place, you can't miss it. Or you can kiss me.

I miss that part of quests. I hope they can bring that back, it really added to the adventure.

If you mean the stats and classes are complicated then I disagree entirely. The simplification of Skyrim is the main reason I think it's worse than Oblivion and Morrowind. Then again, I get a hard on from attribute sheets in my RPG's instead of Health/Magick/Stamina
Do you think that the Reachmen are distinctive enough to be considered separate from Bretons and/or Nords?
I don't think any game has done the leveling up right. Attribute multipliers (Not attributes themselves) were shit, and skill trees are shit.
Do you think that the Reachmen are distinctive enough to be considered separate from Bretons and/or Nords?
They are literally just tribal Bretons.
They are literally just tribal Bretons.
If some sources are to be believed, Reachmen are a mixture of a lot of races that they bred with and incorporated into their culture over time. That source is the heavily biased towards the Imperials Pocket Guide to the Empire vol. 1 though, so it should probably be taken with a grain of salt.
They're a group of tribal Bretons (and maybe some Nords) with somewhat more elvish blood due to their connection with the Direnni, that much we know for certain.

Yeah, but if you really think about it that's what the Breton race as a whole are. Not so much culturally, but Bretons are literally just a race that came from the various men and mer doin' the bippy.
The Reachmen are to Bretons as Ashlanders are to Dunmer, basically.
Same race, different heritage and beliefs.

Well, they're specifically Nedes+Aldmer. According to the PGE1, they share blood with many races; but that's probably just the very much opposing Empire trying to make them look like inbred mongrels. I wouldn't be surprised if there's some Dunmer and Bosmer in there though, Dunmer share some views on the Daedra and the Bosmer live nearby and are pretty open-minded and liberal about these kinds of things.
This is what the PGE1 says about them:
The Reachmen are a mongrel breed, even for Bretons. Descended originally from one of the earliest Atmoran tribes to settle Tamriel, their lineage now partakes of nearly every race imaginable. The uprising that finally "freed" the Western Reach ended in the extermination of the Aldmeri overlords, but Elven blood still flows strong in the Reachmen, and they share the secretive, haughty demeanor of that race. In later years, they traded and exchanged customs with the Orcish villages that shared their mountains, and eventually learned much of the beastfolk's magic. Reach-magic is still widely studied, although it is banned by the Mages Guild (who fear it as dangerous and wild hedge-wizardry), and the Reachmen are often referred to as the "Witchmen of High Rock."
That's like saying ESB was a good movie; there's very little current gaming that was like that quest.

There's another Dark Soulsy mod out. I haven't tried it myself, but it won a contest on reddit so it must be good.

"Dark Souls inspired" indeed. Some of the other screenshots have the Looking Glass Knight and Smough, so expect some of that HD quality Japanese model ripping throughout the entire thing.

Re-reading my post, yeah, it is a pretty shitty way to put it, but I didn't know what else to say besides 'clunky' twenty times so I just spewed the first word that came to mind. I do like old RPG stat systems which is why I replay games like Fallout 1 and 2 atleast once every 3-4 years, but there's something about Oblivion that I can't really describe that puts me off massively.
There's a reason why Skyrim sold way more copies than Oblivion.

Yeah but I don't think that is the reason, Skyrim just got more hype and got released at the right time when everybody was into that kind of game. Oblivion also helped a lot, since most people wanted to jump on the TES-bandwagon. I mean, Skyrim was the 'next big thing' and everyone wanted to be a part of that.
