I think this is my biggest gripe with Oblivion. I've made up countless random senseless excuses about how the game is ugly, or complex, or the voice acting is bad when none of those things are true. It doesn't grab at me the same way Skyrim does, plain and simple.
I completed Morrowind despite the weird combat and I loved games that were complete horrid garbage, but I still can't get that fucking Oblivion main quest done. I swear I've reinstalled the game 30 fucking times over the last 4 years, only to mod it a little bit and uninstall it after reaching the city.
I might just have mental problems at this rate
Oblivion's main quest is fucking garbage. I'd still argue it's better than Skyrim's, but it's definitely shit.
But the side quests are all fucking amazing, on the other hand. And Shivering Isles.
or he simply doesn't say shit as usual since you can play like three quarters of the quest without uttering a single word.
and this is the best thing ever
Oblivion had a terrible main quest because the sheer repetitiveness of the environments made it a pain in the ass to sit through. Having to go through dozens of identical oblivion gates and dozens of identical ayleid dungeons to essentially perform fetch quests that composed a solid half of the total questline was horrendous.
It's actually the same problem the guilds suffer from in Skyrim, the fact most of them feel like grinding chores. Outside of the winterhold college which has proper progression with proper quests (even though the questline is far too short), all of the guild quests somehow involve high amounts of grinding because the core of these guilds are shitty radiant quests instead of interesting and well put together contracts. The Dark Brotherhood's quests went from "get in that mansion and kill everyone in here, bonus points if they never knew it was you to begin with" to "kill these three people who are living somewhere in Tamriel, I don't know just get the fuck out of my office". Not to mention the Companions where you have to go and beat the shit out of ysolda, who you can also marry, and plenty of other meaningless NPCs. Even the very first quest of the fighter's guild where you have to kill rats in a basement has a more interesting development than this.
The worst offender is still the thieves guild where you have to perform 100+ of the same four or five chores before getting the lousiest fucking number of FOUR NON-RADIANT QUESTS to become guildmaster. The radiant quests were also the only parts which were actually linked with stealing shit and only stealing, while all other missions actively revolve around murder since the game drops so many enemies in the very linear locations you have to explore. One mission you get is an outright assassination contract as well. And your reward for becoming the guildmaster is... a single fucking safe and a bunch of jewelry.
Why do people keep saying you have to go through dozens of oblivion gates.
You are only required to go through 3 throughout the whole main quest, and the last one is hardly a proper gate.

there's a gate in every city
And there is a whole lot of em out in the wilderness too. But you ain't required to go trough all of em. You don't need the support of each city to beat back the invasion. You can manage without em. Therefore, @cdr248 is right, you only need three of em.
Did cities support you after you cleared their oblivion gates? I don't even remember that, i just blasted through the main quest and the invasion so quickly it barely mattered
[editline]28th June 2015[/editline]
I actually don't remember much about Oblivion except getting it on a $5-equivalent sale for PS3 around 2009 and having a blast throughout. Ended up getting it for PC a second time after seeing all the silly mods for it. I don't think i joined any guilds or did any interesting quests, even though i did glitch in lots of watermelons
Did cities support you after you cleared their oblivion gates? I don't even remember that, i just blasted through the main quest and the invasion so quickly it barely mattered
I never actually got to this point because my save game got so bloated it crashed every two minutes, but from what I've read if you clear an oblivion gate outside a city you can ask the count/countess for help with the portal in Bruma, in the form of a 10 person brigade of guards! It's really quite epic if you get all of the cities.
[sp]Hah, if only. Nah, you only get one guard to save the entire world with[/sp]
I'm all about the Dark Brotherhood, but I've heard the Mage's Guild is arguably one of the best factions in Oblivion. But again, for the aforementioned reasons (like how Mod Organizer doesn't play nicely with Oblivion), I can't bring myself to install and mod the game again.
Are you sure? It works fine for me here
You know those things you don't really notice until someone points it out? And then you can't not notice it?

I feel like this is one of those things.

I always remember that area looking really awkward but I could never quite put my finger on it.

Pretty fun game. Anybody know where that fucking cube is?

It's actually not that far from the entrance. When you go down the ramp from the entrance and you enter the first cave and you look to your left at the Dwemer structure, there is a second level to it with a staircase leading up. The cube should be in a room there.

Speaking of Oblivion, the Lead Creative Designer of that game is now the Creative Designer on ESO. The last guy left to work at Gearbox

the armors and enviroments don't look that bad really. only gripe is that the elves dont really look like ES elves. their eyes aren't as slanted so they look like they are out of LOTR or something.

Didn't all the Tamrielic species come from a single common ancestor way back in the Merethic era or some shit
it's possible that the slanted eyes hadn't kicked in yet by 2E

Does anyone know the cause of this error? Happens when launching Skyrim or the Creation kit.

I was literally just using both the other day to work on my mod. I've googled a bit but haven't found much other than reinstalling, which is my last resort I suppose.

already checked my INI's.

I got that problem when my GPU started dying. Maybe your graphic is bad?
It's a fairly new GTX 970 and I run Witcher 3 and GTAV on max everything so I don't think that's the cause. Maybe it's the ENB & mods causing the issue, not sure why now after all this time of using the same mod setup. Skyrim is bizzaro world tho so who knows.
[editline]29th June 2015[/editline]
Restarted PC and everything worked again. Weird.
It's usually an ENB or Ini issue, stick both in another folder and launch the game through the regular launcher, then see if it run to the title screen, also make sure resolution is VESA supported, if you missed typing a number or typed in a wrong one, Skyrim will auto crash.
Oh shit this looks cool. It turns Whiterun Hold into another Falkreath hold. He didn't update the navmesh, but trees are cylindrical so NPCs don't really get stuck on them. My follower does get stuck on fallen tree trunks sometimes, though.

I think Falkreath Hold is amazing and Whiterun Hold is a bit boring, so this is right up my alley.
Anybody got any tips for good voiced companions?
Currently got Inigo and was wondering if there are any of similar quality?
(I also tried Vilja but had to remove her, sure she seemed to have a whole story arc going on but man.. that voice... reminded me of my step-grandmother... I hate my step-grandmother)

Aurlyn Dawnstone is a great follower IMO. Her voice acting is top-notch, which is hard to say for most custom followers.

wizard companions are shit-tier though
i'm already more than enough wizard for everyone
Is there any way to change Daggerfall's resolution? All the guides I find online are about changing DOSBox's resolution.

TBH I care more about the character and the voice acting than combat efficiency, I can pretty much wipe out anything on my own anyway
