From an interview with Sakurai:
“The biggest feature we look at in Smash Bros. is, ‘What does this character bring to Smash Bros. that other characters don’t?’ If you look at… someone from a fighting game already, and people like fighting with this character, from my point of view, it’s like ‘this guy does what this guy already does. He fills the role that this character already has. So while you may like this character and he’s interesting, that doesn’t really merge well, here.”

Speaking in his bi-weekly column in Weekly Famitsu, Sakurai said the reason the latest iteration in the fighting series will skip out on theses extras, is due to the cutscenes being uploaded on the Internet.
“Unfortunately, the movie scenes we worked hard to create were uploaded onto the internet,” Sakurai said. “You can only truly wow a player the first time he sees [a cutscene]. I felt if players saw the cutscenes outside of the game, they would no longer serve as rewards for playing the game, so I’ve decided against having them.”
Instead, video sequences will be spread around and include introductory videos for the Villager, Mega Man, and Wii Fit Trainer lady. Characters can also be customized to an extent, and will alter character performance. Customizations from the 3DS version being transferred over to the Wii U version is also being considered.
While the game won’t include a story mode either, the 3DS version will include a feature acting as a “separate mode from the standard versus play,” and both versions of the game will include different stages.
The 3DS version comes with portable game-themed stages, and the Wii U version contains home console game-themed stages.
While I thought the cutscenes were cool, Sakurai's right. I saw "The Greatest Cutscene in the Game" (you know which one) online, months before Brawl came out in America. It certainly spoiled it, and I'm sure it would've been much cooler if I first saw it at home on my TV. Also, he's still not specifying what type of customization the 3DS version will have. I hope we get a trailer of it soon.

That interview is over a month old, and out of date, why is everyone posting it now?

Smashboards said it was new information, and I was too lazy to do my research. Though I do think there are a couple new details in there.

which one?
which one?
The one where [sp]the Subspace Cannon gets wrecked by everyone in a joint effort,[/sp] presumably.

It is Gawker translating the previously translated article. I take gawker with a grain of salt.
Also if you go to Famitsu's site, the last time Sakurai posted was in June, talking a bout his opinion on RE:R.

everyone seeing it early is obviously not because they took fucking forever to release it everywhere though
January in Japan, March in the US and June in Europe. In 2008.
Yeah, we'd be obvious to the truth.
BTW, I just recalled the 28th of January of said year. That was an awesome leak.

Personally, I played it as soon as it came out in japan because yarr harr fiddle-dee dee but it would've been fucking torturous for everyone else in Australia to have to wait like 6 months just to play it.

I agree with that. I like that all the Smash characters are basically just who they are in their games but forced to rely on their abilities in a completely new way. A fighting game character who's always been in a player versus player close combat side-perspective game might simply transition to Smash so well that there's nothing new and unique about the way they use their abilities. While all other characters show a new side of themselves, the fighting game character would just be doing the same old thing as always.

So what's going on here? This is just Samus and Link getting blasted off the stage or is something else going on?

Unless I'm mistaken I'm pretty sure the colors of those things has always been the same whereas they're color coded to the character here.
Unless I'm mistaken I'm pretty sure the colors of those things has always been the same whereas they're color coded to the character here.
According to Sakurai's post, they changed the colours to correspond to the player that has knocked them back, so as to show players who is gonna get the point.
As in player 1 is red and player 2 is blue or as in Mario is red Megaman is blue?
I'd assume it's player 1 is red, player 2 is blue, player 3 is yellow and player 4 is green.
Since multiple people could be playing Mario, both Mario and Samus are red, and all characters have a variety of palette swaps.
So... apparently the people over at BowlRoll.net have made fairly accurate (and more high quality than what the usual anime model) MMD models of 2/3 of the newcomers...
Here's Wii Fit Trainer
and here's the Villager
They both require passwords, and the Villager seems to be private, but the Wii Fit Trainer, on the other hand has an image containing this text
パスワ一ドは
雪のような肌左言い表す色
「O」 ほ字ひと文字托
□一マ字で4文字です。
Anyone care to translate, so that we can go and pass the time while Nintendo isn't releasing information?
I know this is a post from 2 weeks ago but I emailed my friend about the image which has the password for the Wii Fit Trainer... His translation is "The password expresses a color of snow like skin. One One Chinese character (kanji) becomes 4 letters of the alphabet"
I'll have to look into this later.
EDIT: The password is siro. Go nuts with the model
Maybe Andy from advance wars could be cool?
[t]http://imgkk.com/i/upuw.jpg[/t]
Well Andy/Max/Sami could work but Andy is probably the most recognized out of the characters.
Well, Totalbisquit posted his news vid today with the false Kotaku article information.
Now there's a lot of people saying how Nintendo's gone to shit, as bad as EA, etc.
Really stupid all this happened because of a biased and mistranslated article.

I was rooting for Colin since he's the most broken CO of the game, but Andy will definitely work.

I'm not too sure what he means by this, but I think he's talking about how people would be disappointed by the lack of moves or a change in "gameplay style". The Tekken characters wouldn't be too exciting since they've lost their mechanic of juggling. He acknowledges that those fighting games have a lot of depth, and that he doesn't intend to ruin the character by reducing it.

I just checked, and it looks like he removed that part.

He apologized on twitter too, too bad Screw Attack is still reporting it as news as well.

That wrench would be useful for A-attacks.
I guess I should ask, but is the WiFi service for Brawl shut down? It would be cool to do some sort of FP Brawl meet up if it's still working.
