I'm probably gonna be a douche and buy both versions :v:
So they just announced they are doing panels at PAX next week, and that people attending will be able to buy Wonderful 101 early. I think we might get something out of PAX instead of Gamescom now.
I'm probably gonna be a douche and buy both versions :v:
If they have a deal where it's cheaper to buy both I'd do it, if not I'd stick to Wii U only (maybe buy the 3ds one at a later date)
That's not the "up yours" pose.
My memory failed me. :(

the villager looks photoshopped
I'm getting both anyway. Pretty much two halves of the same game, if you ask me.
the villager looks photoshopped
the 3ds makes it looks like this so it can make the layers look 3D
Those 13 Funnies and 1 Winner have inspired me to share the second half of the story. Again, it has no bearing on SSB itself, but it's funny nonetheless. Previously on Smashboards Idiot Hour, a certain individual compared his rabid support for Ridley to the Civil Rights movement. Keep that in mind, because it'll come into play again later. Out of the blue, someone mentioned how they thought Brawl's colors were ugly. (I think they were talking about how Snake would/wouldn't fit into the new art style or something like that.) So, our favorite moron decided to post this in response:
What's with the Brawl hate all of a sudden? Is it because it's the cool thing for hardcore gamers to do to casual gamers? Seriously, I thought Brawl has great graphics for a Wii game - the realistic, hard style was awesome to look at, what with Mario's overalls and DK's fur. I thought it was awesome because it was realistic like it would look like in the real world, almost like it was HD. Melee looked too cartoonish, in my opinion, and the colors were pretty bright and cool, but hey, what can I say. So I welcomed Brawl's realistic style.
Now, I'm not trying to start a Melee vs. Brawl debate. I just wanted to provide context for his next posts. See that bolded part? Someone else quotes it and jokingly compares Melee fans and Brawl fans to Hitler and the Jews during WWII. (Naturally, this was to mock the idiots comparison of his Ridley support to the Civil Rights movement.) How does he respond?
Wow. Really insensitive, right there. I'm not surprised you stooped so low to make that joke...Show some respect.
The joke goes right over his head. But yes, it gets even better. He proceeds to remove the above post, even though a five people had already quoted it. Meanwhile, someone recalls a time when this same moron went on a homophobic rant in another thread. Oh my, that's quite the accusation. I wonder how this dolt is going to reply...
I was complaining about the obvious homosexual agenda that's running through these threads, yet my opinion was silenced on it (I was even BANNED) because of what was deemed as "homophobic" comments against homosexuals. Whatever.
Yes, you were clearly banned for speaking out against such an atrocious crime against nature. Clearly the moderators are Nazis that don't want you speaking out against their dreadful, liberal ideals. It's not like you're a complete moron with not even a single shred of intelligence in that big, stupid head of yours. Nope, not at all. And then someone asked what he meant by "obvious homosexual agenda" and then a moderator came in and said they probably shouldn't egg him on any more and then that's where the wild ride ended.
i want ridley but come on now people are being super silly
well that's a relief. i thought that the wii u and 3ds versions would be different now i don't have to buy a wii u
I don't have a source, but I remember hearing that there'd be exclusive stages per. Maybe not exclusive characters, though, due to a console character being on the 3DS.
Ridley simply should be added to the game, no other way to put it As far as iconic characters from Nintendo's big franchises, Metroid deserves another and Ridley is the obvious choice. As vital as Meta Knight.
yeah ridley should be added into the game.
I don't really feel that Ridley is a vital addition, but that's simply because I don't know how they'd make him work. But if they're adding another Metroid character- and they should- then Ridley is the most logical choice.

I just noticed how bad those shadows are
I just noticed how bad those shadows are
Gotta make compromises for the weaker system's capabilities. It's not like the shadows were ever even close to realistic in any of the smash bros games. Their primary use was to show where on the stage they were, even if they were high in the sky. This is true for most early 3d games but some 2d and 2.5d games use it for the same reasons. It takes the guesswork out of depth perception and just flat-out tells the player where they'll land.
It makes a very large part of me very sad that one of my favorite characters in gaming has absolutely no chance of ever being included: He just seems like such a perfect fit, extreme profanity aside. Everything from standard and special moves (suplex grabthrows and all) to a final smash (slot lines up three BARs and he turns into a tiger). And taunting would switch your beam katana of course.
Kirbunny431, keep telling us stories from Smashboards!

Even the concept of his weapon is enough to prevent it, since there's no point in the game where it isn't used as sexual innuendo.

It takes the guesswork out of depth perception and just flat-out tells the player where they'll land.
But there's a super-cheap way to make detailed shadows that games have been doing since the PS1... By making them out of polygons. All they did was take the model, shade it entirely black, flatten it until its Z axis is zero, then position it below the character and make sure it always stays level to the surface below it by warping and splitting and skewing it, and it looked great. Halo:CE used that (to great effect), and many modern games still do. The disadvantage of this is that it can't be dynamic since it's using local and not global variables for its position, but I don't think that's really doable on the 3DS anyhow (at least not very well) My guess is that this wasn't chosen due the fact that detailed shadows for smaller characters could entirely disappear (or be only a single pixel large) if the camera zooms out enough due to the resolution. This would make landing jumps as them during more hectic and spaced bouts a lot more difficult, so they decided to give all characters large, consistent and bold shadows to compensate for this. Basically, they're trying to prevent the 3DS' small screen from getting in the way of gameplay by any means they can find.
I'm pretty bloody sure the previous games used the polygon-style shadows in Melee, or Brawl at least. The only reason why they're not doing the same for the 3DS version of the game is because they're already pushing it to the extreme with the visuals as is - and not to mention, the start of development is still relatively fresh, to the point that Sakurai worried before that he may've announced the new game too early. (Or am I mixing that up with Kingdom Hearts 3 and Nomura's statements around that? Hell, maybe they both said the same thing about their respective games.) I wouldn't know if they're actually thinking quite that far ahead, Everything, but then it may or may not be permanent for all we know.
Could very well be just early on in its development, but I'm still sticking to my theory. I mean, try playing a modern shooter game at 240p and see how many times you get killed by a lump of pixels you couldn't tell was a dude and not just a part of the background. Low resolution hurts fast-paced games unless they're built to embrace and work around those limitations. This is why the outlines were added to characters in SSB4:3D, and I think the solid, circular shadows came from a very similar concern.
Having detailed graphics and everything is nice, but readability is important in fighting games and the 3DS has a tiny ass resolution and screen. The simpler they make graphics (provided they're still aesthetically pleasing) the better.

Yeah, it's certainly not the high-resolution quality of the Vita and Nintendo's pretty damn lazy with their stuff, but it's not THAT bad. I can still recognize things on a standard 3DS from a distance in games like Ocarina of Time or Dream Drop Distance. And the trailer footage for the 3DS version made it seem like it wouldn't zoom out too far so as to make the characters literal pixels.

Aside from the smaller screen, you would imagine the 3DS version to have similar fidelity to Melee at least even if the art style is different. That said, outlines on 3D models are pretty expensive, I hear.
Outlines or not, I see at least 2x Antialiasing in the screenshots shown thusfar. A lot of 3DS games will antialias if you have 3D disabled, and I hope this one will too. I wonder what the framerate will be like with all these bells and whistles on 3DS. I'm hoping for 40 at least.
Trailer looked really smooth even in the 3DS sections. I wouldn't be surprised to see it running a full 60.
I would be incredibly impressed if Nintendo set the WiiU version up to display at 120Hz. The hardware supports refresh rates up to 120 without interpolation, but no games exceed 60fps yet. This would be the perfect opportunity to change that.
I believe that's more to support 3DTVs at 60FPS than go up to 120FPS, as Nintendo has confirmed the Wii U supports 3D. I'm not sure how many people have 120Hz TVs yet as it is. I do, but I don't know if I'm the minority, majority, or what.
