It's like you never played Rally-X before in your life.
Collecting the special flags in R-X makes all subsequent flag collection worth double, allowing you to maximize your score. The bonus is lost when you lose a life.
In the context of Smash Bros, it'd be a good analog to have increased damage for a short time (or until you lose a stock). Items have some remote similarities to their base appearances, giving an extra stock is nowhere close to what it did originally.

I don't think I've seen an original Smash stage that 'organic' besides Subspace-related stuff, maybe there's some sort of implication to a solo mode or it's just one hell of a stylistic choice.
